Inevitable double dips

Inevitable double dips. Pretty self explanatory. What DVDs do you see having a new edition coming in the near future?
I'm gonna have to say Bonnie and Clyde. It's a landmark film, the old dvd is no longer in print (as far as Amazon is concerned) and I can really picture this big fat 2 disc with the original poster as the cover art.

Eventually, a wise, determined man will swiftly and efficiently kidnap Helena Bonham Carter, and mail Tim Burton a piece of finger every week a Beetlejuice SE continues to not exist.

The current THREE KINGS disc has a pretty good array of special features. It's a snapper case, which bites, but I dig a lot of the content.

A few that I hope, and imagine will, get double dipped at some point:

THEY LIVE
LAST BOY SCOUT
LETHAL WEAPON
MIDNIGHT RUN
KILL BILL 1 and 2
I've been wanting a special edition of The Game for years, but I don't know if it'll ever happen. I eventually just crumbled and bought the region 2 edition.

How about any movie that's hit DVD in the past year? Pretty much everything gets double dipped.
Grosse Pointe Blank
Bottle Rocket
Dead Alive,
and I wish that Paramount would have done more with The Warriors, say, included both versions.
I second The Last Boy Scout and the first Lethal Weapon. Also, They Live has a Piper/Carpenter commentary in Region 2. What gives?
I want to say Scanners...but I think what I really want is a better lead actor, heyohhhh. I love Cronenberg--I want the Dead Zone and Existenz S.E.s to come out here.

I hear ya, that one has been out on Region 2 for years now. I'd break down and import it but its gotta come out here eventually. Its just gotta.
Superman Returns'll get one for sure, hopefully in a shorter stripped down version, like Payback.
(The ones I really want probably not so inevitable: Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Escape from LA, Heaven's Gate)
The Imax footage would be the biggest reason for a Returns re-release, but that would be contigent on a sequel going forward. Likely the supplements would be modest, ala Spider-Man 2.5, because the previous release was definitive.

As for They Live, I wouldn't hold your breath, Uni's about the worst company for SE's in the post-laserdisc days, and if they were to do it, it'll probably be for the HD release, though a number of the HD's they've put out have been bared boned, and the UK put out a two disc deluxe edition of Flash Gordon, while the recent SE features none of that material.

They still re-making NEAR DARK? Expect a shiny new package of the original to go with the theatrical release.
A Criterion Bottle Rocket and Seventh Seal rerelease
post #16 of 54
Motherfucking Road Warrior. The HD version has a commentary I believe. As much as I'd like a decent doc for it, I'd be happy with a non-snapper case re-release with the commentary and new transfer.

*edit- New cover art too, please.

I seem to recall seeing Bonnie & Clyde on WHV's release schedule for this year. Cool Hand Luke too.

YES.

The Game seconded full-heartedly.

Also: Grosse Pointe Blank (mentioned above) and The Last Boy Scout (also mentioned above), seconded each respectively.

THE RUNNING MAN SE is kind of sorry. It's 2 discs, but mainly because one disc is widescreen and the other is the film in full frame. The "documentaries" are a waste. They have very little to do with the film. It's mostly a lot of garbage about reality television. When I'm watching a RUNNING MAN DVD and I see former "Survivor" contestants being interviewed instead of Mick Fleetwood, that's a problem.

I'm sure FOX will get a better disc out there for TRUE LIES at some point, but to be honest I'd love Warner to put out a snazzy upgrade for ERASER.

I actually have it on my shelf but have yet to watch it. I figured between the commentaries and the other features it would cover all the bases. I guess it's mostly fluff shit huh?
Oh well, at least I have it on DVD now.

I might be wrong, but I seem to remember FOX having a "five star collection"(ala Die Hard and Speed) DVD all lined up and ready to go pre-9/11, then they shelved it. I broke down and bought the single disc a while back after I'd given up hope of it ever seeing the light of day.

*edit- added some stuff
The Abyss is still non-anamorphic, so that should be remedied. I think because of the branching video stuff.

I hadn't heard that. FOX has already upgraded PREDATOR, COMMANDO is coming in September, and my God even JINGLE ALL THE WAY is getting a "Family Fun Edition!" Even though it's not one of my favorites I'd have thought there'd be a better disc by this time.

I always just figured Arnold and Cameron have been too busy over the years to contribute much for a TRUE LIES SE. I'm sure there are hours upon hours of Tom Arnold interviews recorded and not much else.
As long as we're talking Schwarzenegger I'd love an Arnold commentary for Hercules in New York, though I hardly think it's inevitable.
I still hope the box in the other thread is the real deal, but the Kill Bill: Whole Bloody Affair set is about 2 years past due.
Cool Hand Luke, me wishes. I also wnat a proper edition of 300 on Blu-ray, as that one doesn't have a pip commentary, and at comic con, someone sais at a panel that a better blu-ray was due.
THE CONVERSATION is an OK release, if just for the Coppola and Murch commentaries. It needs a better transfer.

The THEY LIVE commentary from that R2 disc is a bit underwhelming. No one is missing anything by not having it. "Rowdy" Roddy is no match for Kurt Russell as Carpenter's best commentary partner.

I do wish Sony would put out a STARMAN SE like in R2, but I won't hold my breath.
I was thiiiiiis close to buying the FACE/OFF DVD when I saw on amazon that a new, special edition, two disc set is coming come november....anyone heard anything on this? What kind of special features we getting? Will they wrangle in Travolta and Cage to talk about playing each other? That would be a hoot.
I can't believe no one has mentioned it yet, but...

When are we gonna get our damn TRUE LIES: SPECIAL EDITION ???
Moltisanti brought it up a little ways back.

I did a tiny bit of digging and this might be worth a skim-read for info about that True Lies 5-Star Collection DVD I mentioned earlier. It's a thread from hometheaterforum from 2001.

Isnt there already a special edition of The Game? I dont own it but am pretty sure it exists, there's a commentary with Fincher and Douglas and everything. Right? Or is that for R2 only? No special edition for R1 doesnt sound right though...

We definitely need better DVDs of Grosse Pointe Blank and Face/Off. But you can also add The Insider, The Thin Red Line, Ghost Dog, and another version of The Truman Show with a bit more meat please. And a decent fucking transfer of Chungking Express at least. All these films will surely sell well, they're not exactly obscure titles, there's no excuse!

I remember reading earlier this year that there would be a R1 special edition of House of Flying Daggers, anyone else read about that or did I imagine it?
Good call on THE INSIDER. That one really needs it bad.

Interesting, I can see why it would have been dicey right after 9/11 but since then FOX has produced 6 seasons of "24." Not to mention a "Martial Law Edition" DVD of THE SIEGE. There must be something else holding up TRUE LIES at this point.

Here is a rundown from DVDActive of the extras from the new FACE/OFF release:

Quote:
This 10th Anniversary release will be available to own from the 11th September. As well as an anamorphic widescreen transfer and an English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track, the set will include an audio commentary with director John Woo, seven deleted scenes (including an alternate ending), The Light and the Dark: The Making of Face/Off documentary, a John Woo: A Life in Pictures feature, and more.

There was a laserdisc with commentary, pretty good track too. I still have a VHS tape somewhere with the film and commentary dubbed onto it. There's never been a special edition in R1, but there are a few R2 SEs with commentary, as the helpful DVDCompare link shows: http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=558
post #35 of 54
I third The Insider. I've held off buying it because I just KNOW it'll get an SE someday.

Same with The Game and Grosse Pointe Blank (I have that one on VHS, though).

Remember when VHS of new movies cost like $200? Ha! I remember my giant Movies Unlimited catalogs...

Thats so weird though, why a special edition for R2 and not R1? I love The Game and have been meaning to get the R2 for a while, but now I'm wondering if a super R1 special edition might make an appearence anytime soon...

I'm also still disappointed that The Insider didnt, at the very least, have the infamous 60 Minutes episode as an extra, I mean as G.O.B used to say...COME ON.

All this malarky makes me wonder if studios knowingly leave these excellent titles as barebones so on a rainy day when profits are in a bit of a slump, they can release a special edition to give them a bit of a bump. Its annoying seeing crap movies get numerous double dips with increasing amount of extras, while something amazing like The Thin Red Line remains barebones.

THE INSIDER was an almost $90m movie that opened to $6m and took a massive total of $30m domestic. It also appeared when DVD was new.

Licensing the 60 Minutes episode would not be cheap. How many reasons did the studio have to think it would be worth the money? Zero.

Thats pretty surprising... Surprising that it made so much, or so little, I cant decide.

You're depressing me now.

Crap DVD, lack of profits, nominated for a bunch of Oscars, didnt win any. The Insider, you were up against a naked upside down Mena Suvari that year, I feel sorry for you.

Holy hell, somebody produce a remastered Clash of the Titans SE stat. This thing looks like it's been rotting in a damp basement for two decades.

Deliverance
Badlands
Phantom of the Paradise

Days of Heaven (coming from Criterion)
Two-Lane Blacktop (coming from Criterion)

Agree with Midnight Run, Road Warrior, Grosse Pointe Blank.

As well as a full remastered presentation, the disc will include a commentary by Boorman, a Deliverance: The Beginning feature that takes a historical look at the novel and its adaptation to the screen, a Deliverance: The Journey featurette, a Deliverance: Betraying the River featurette on one of the most controversial and ground-breaking sequences in film history, and a Deliverance: Delivered featurette that takes a reflective look back on the film and its impact. Completing the package will be an original documentary entitled Dangerous World of Deliverance that looks at the difficult conditions and challenges of making the film, and the trailer. Finally got around to watching this. You're right, it sucks. The "big brother" post-9/11 mini doc was semi-interesting, but totally unrelated to the film.
The commentary with the director and producer has a lot of dead air, and at one point one of them mentions Arnold's German accent, and the other doesn't correct him. Oh well. The only notable thing I learned is that Andrew Davis was the original director, and had filmed for 2 weeks before he was replaced by Paul Michael Glaser*.

*who happens to be the original Starsky from "Starsky and Hutch"... weird. Thanks IMDb!

I wish I could get a hold of Munich 2 Disc without paying 50 fucking dollars. They need to throw that one back out. Speaking of Spielberg, I know it's kind of a sticky thing to dissect with commentary or lots of doc's, but Schindler's List really needs a true special edition.

All of the Coen movies could be done better. The Big Lebowski special edition was a joke, Hudsucker needs one, and I think somebody already mentioned O Brother...
MILLER'S CROSSING really needs a new edition. The current one isn't quite barebones but there's a lot of room for improvement.
Agreed.

Children of Men seems too obvious to mention. Oops.

I know the film's path and development ended up being very troubled, but I would love to see American History X done right.

If you're a member of Netflix, you can buy a used Munich with bonus disc for about $7.99 I've come this close to doing it, but I already have the movie and I don't really feel like having a couple of extra docs around the house I'll never watch.

ed the Munich 2 disc. Not really worth having the second disc.
There isn't much I'd be willing to repurchase these days. Maybe the Blu-ray version of The Road Warrior since I paid virtually nothing for the DVD, and the transfer was kind of shitty. Extras just don't compel me to double-dip anymore.
