I need metal that doesn't suck.

Thread Starter
I still love metal. The stuff keeps my inner angry white boy at peace. Finding new stuff that floats my boat, however, is becoming difficult, especially now thast I'm not home often enough to watch/listen to the Music Choice channels anymore. So, I'm hoping you guys have done some of the legwork for me and found some new awesomeness.

My criteria:

I'm willing to forgive Cookie Monster vocals if the rest of the music makes them worth sitting through. (Example: Nile, and the obscure Egyptian mythology angle.)

I hate hair metal with a passion. If the vocalist sounds like strangled Chocobos, he has failed.

Prog metal is great as long as the band's taking their Ritalin.

I'm picky about true death metal.

I'm a sucker for anyone that uses an orchestra without descending into medieval histrionics.

Nu-metal bands that don't suck (Ex: Sevendust up till two albums ago, post-Sickness Disturbed, Nonpoint) are okay.

Dragonforce sucks.

For reference, the last few recent bands to catch my attention were Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Otep, Arch Enemy.

There ya go. Impress me.

Tungsten is pretty sweet, and makes good filaments. It is heavier than lithium though.
Sorry man, it's just I have no pointers to give out at all, and thought of getting rid of the obvious jokes right away

I all can offer is my love of Space Lord by Monster Magnet. That metal song has the most fun.
Try: Bullet For My Valentine, 36 CrazyFists ("A Snow Capped Romance"), Alexisonfire, Blindside (they're nu-metalish but "Silence" is fantastic), Mastodon, Strung Out (more punkish, but with some metal going on), and I've personally always dug System of a Down.
I have to recommend Slipknot's Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses -album. A very good rock/metal-album. I understand some of the band's fans hate it because
a) Corey Taylor sings on it instead of screaming through the whole album
b) It has ballads
c) The lyrics aren't just variations of the theme "fuck you"

Everyone I know keeps recommending Mastodon's Blood Mountain to me. Still haven't picked it up.

If Alexisonfire counts, then I firmly back them. I've always seen them as more punk, but I guess they bridge the gap.

Mastodon's Blood Mountain, which was the subject of a thread earlier this year, is a great great metal album from 2006.

Trivium is also another good band.

Kaos Krew (industrial) is pretty good.

Ugh. They're horrible. Metallica-lite.

I'm sorta in the same boat as Crow. Most new metal I listen to is garbage. I can call every breakdown and whiny part of every shitty new band I listen to, the first time.

But, some albums I've been rocking lately-

God Forbid: IV: Constitution of Treason - One of my favorite albums of recent years. Bringing back the thrash with a mix of the new.

Bleeding Through: This Is Love, This Is Murderous - Metalcore with a keyboard. This is their only good album, don't listen to the new one, because it veers into whiny screamo.

Demolition Hammer: Tortured Existance - Old School Bronx heroes, this is thrash at its finest.

And if you want to try cookie monster vocals, you can't go wrong with Dying Fetus. Just pure unbridled brutality.

If you like Killswitch Engage with Howard Jones on vocals, try and pick up his old band- Blood Has Been Shed. I like it better than the new Killswitch. Novella of Uriel is their best album.

Hope this helps you out...

Shihad's pretty good.

If you like MASTODON, probably the next few- although not all strictly metal- will definitely strike your fancy:

-PELICAN: great & uplifting (!) melodic metal
-BORIS: more experimental than Mastodon, but great sound- especially if you like that slow sludge-rock thing.
-If you dig that, check out everything on the label SOUTHERN LORD (http://www.southernlord.com), when it comes to slow & heavy they mean business.
-And while we're at it: don't buy their music but go see a SunnO))) (no typo, that's the name) live gig as soon as you can. It will change your life.
-BIG BUSINESS is a hardrocking drum&bass (the set-up, not the genre) duo who do a powerful version of hardcore metal. Great singing voice also. They teamed up with the MELVINS for their latest album. As a result, both that record (A Senile Animal) and their current live shows are among the best genre shows you can experience at the moment.

Hope this helps!

It came out a few years ago, but Atomship's "The Crash of '47" is really good.

Edit: Also, if you're willing to experiment a little, the Dresden Dolls are amazing. Not really metal in the strictest sense, but of the same sensibility. Just a piano/vocalist and drummer who make an amazing amount of noise. Try their first (self-titled) cd. They toured with Nine Inch Nails a couple years ago if that gives them any metal cred (although they're not industrial in any way either).

The crazy dudes from Norway. They ate their drummer's brain matter after he commited suicide. Hard core.
The Last Sucker by Ministry was leaked and it is pretty damn good.
More speed metal/death metal than any of their other albums.
Amon Amarth - With Oden on Our Side.
In Flames - Whoracle/Colony.
Anaal Nathrakh - Echaton.
Blind Guardian - A Twist in the Myth.
Dark Tranquility - Damage Done/Character.
Edguy - Theatre of Salvation.
Finntroll - Jakten's Tid.
Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes.
Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death.
Isis - Oceanic.
Lair of the Minotaur - The Ultimate Destroyer.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor.
Opeth - Ghost Reveries.
Pelican - Australasia.
Symphony X - Paradise Lost.
Also anything by Therion, Turisas, Korpiklaani, Sunn O))), or old school Rainbow.

There's no Emo, or Nu, Screamo, or Hair Metal on this list.
Seek them out and trust Andrew.

Ah, Mayhem.

Vocalist Euronymous later denied eating his brain, but evidently took pictures of his corpse upon discovering him, one of which was stolen and used for a bootleg album cover: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...lackHearts.jpg

Euronymous was later murdered (23 stab wounds) by bassist Kristian Vikernes. Fun guys all around.

Metal's not really my forte, but I'd recommend Isis over Pelican - very much the same slow, massive vibe, but with vocals (of the cookie-monster variety, but relatively unobtrusive) and, more importantly, better sounding drums.

Pelican sound great live, but the drum sound is really, really thin on the albums I've heard, for whatever reason. Not that I put much stock in Pitchfork, but their review of the new Pelican album is basically a page-length screed about how much better the music would be with a different drummer (I think the problem lies far more in how he's recorded, incidentally).

And, if you like either of those, you might want to give Jesu a try. It's Justin Broadrick's post-Godflesh band, and it's probably a little less metal, but still pretty heavy.
I guess it depends on what you call metal. I love Priestess right now. But keep in mind I'm an old guy who likes his metal more in line with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple then most of the new stuff.
Shadows Fall. If you're looking for metal, they're the way to go. (Bands like Alexisonfire, while good at what they do, don't really constitute metal to me). A couple others at the top of their game are Darkest Hour and As I Lay Dying. Their stuff is found easily enough but they're still really, really good. Another great band is The Killing Tree, definitely worth a listen.

A nice list overall, but since Crow stated he doesn't like Dragonforce, I somehow doubt Blind Guardian and all the D&D-related metal will appeal to him.

I will say Pelican' Australaisa EP as well. Don Caballero's Don Caballero 2 is pretty good Math Metal. Also Don Caballero's For Respect is pretty Metal.

Melvins - Houdini.
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley.

Somebody said 36 Crazy Fists above. They're from my hometown so I have to rep. They rock the shit.

Susperia - Vindication and Unlimited are awesome. Basically a band made of black metal musicians that play thrash.
Pathos - Katharsis. May be a little hard to find in the states. One of the best metal albums I've ever heard. Melodic thrash is the best description.
Nevermore - Anything they've ever done is great. Also check out the band Sanctuary (pre-Nevermore) - Into The Mirror Black and Refuge Denied.
Witchfynde - NWOBHM band from the early 80s. Great stuff if you like Diamond Head. Most of their stuff is still around in remasters.
Overkill - My favorite band of all time. Not a bad song to be found.
Accept & U.D.O. - Like a thrashy AC/DC. I've been listening to a lot of this recently.
Fear Factory - Good industrial death metal. Some unique touches in their music.
Gamma Ray - Their more recent stuff is great speed metal. Try Somewhere Out In Space or Powerplant.
Kamelot - Orchestral without getting too cheesy.
Heretic - Mike Howe's band before joining Metal Church. Awesome CD but hard to find.
Reverend - David Wayne's group after he left Metal Church. Hard to find but worth it, especially Play God.
Sacred Reich - Great old school, intelligent thrash. Check out the American Way.
Motorhead - Their newer stuff has been amazing.
Sonata Arctica - I've just recently gotten into these guys and love them.
Testament - You're probably listening to them already, but The Gathering is worth mentioning again.
Helstar, Evildead, Heathen, Liege Lord (Master Control) - Some more obscure old school thrash that I liked.

I thought these days Metallica was Metallica Lite? Those fuckers haven't done anything worth listening to since Master of Puppets. Although, in their defense, that's probably the best heavy metal album of all time.

Anyhow, a little artsy, shades of hawkwind and stonier era Sabbath, perhaps, but there's a band called Orange Goblin, album: Scorpionica, that ain't bad. The last Motorhead album rocked, too, which actually surprised me.

Ill Niño's Revolution/Revolución is pretty great, despite their goofy name. You've probably heard at least a few of the tracks(they did get some radio play with softened-up versions of some of their tracks), but they're a really tight band, and throw is some great latin guitar-work and Spanish vocals in every now and again. I've only heard 2 of their albums, but the second major label one did nothing for me(they switched around some members, softened up their sound). I still love the first though.

If you like Fear Factory, check out Sybreed's Slave Design). They're about to release a second album here sometime soon, and I can't wait. Lots of great fast double-bass pedal action and some techno/industrial elements. The vocals are a bit Fear Factory-ish at times, and also go into Disturbed territory. They've been favorably compared to Meshuggah a lot, but I've never heard those guys. Check out "ReEvolution" on the dreaded Myspace, that song alone might sell you on them.

Last but not least, The Dillinger Escape Plan E.P. they did with Mike Patton(Irony Is a Dead Scene) is short but very, very sweet. That band is really amazing, it's too bad I can't get into their other stuff because they usually have a singer more in line with the "generic shouting hardcore guy", and I'm not really into those bands too much(think Hatebreed). The EP has three amazing original tracks and a cover of Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy". There's a LOT packed into those 3 tracks though. As much variety as most bands manage to pack into an entire album.

Hope this was some help.

Does it still have that really "tinny" sound they've had for the last few? They've been self-producing their albums for a bit, and I swear those guys are deaf in the upper frequencies now. You have to turn the treble down on your stereo or your ears will bleed from all the tinny guitar and cymbals. I never gave the last album a shot though, other than "N.o.W."(which I dug, and sounded good from a production standpoint).
Ahh, Hatebreed. I love their older stuff (it's perfect for working out) but each new album has gotten worse and worse. Every single song has the same structure. Every one. I say that even though I'm in one of their videos.

BUt if you like their style and want something better- try either Irate or Shattered Realm. They're good for macho, punch you in the face type wigger metal.

Oh shit, and I don't know how I didn't mention this before, but listen to e.town concrete. The Second Coming is one of my favorite albums of all time. Ever wonder what rap/metal done right would sound like? Here it is. Heavy, groovy, with a singer that can wrap some sick verses and then bring it down into an incredible scream.

I spent my last years in high school listening to Time 2 Shine, which is their first album and also pretty amazing, although very rough around the edges. Their later albums are nowhere near as good as these first two, as they tried to go commercial after similar-sounding bands got big, and failed completely. Stick to those first two, they're great.

Age Of Winters by The Sword.

Along with Blood Mountain, these were my two favorite albums of 2006.

They're Sludge/Doom metal.

And what Chris Kent said.

Really any Strapping Young Lad album, each one of their albums has been better than the last, The Devin Townsend Band for prog-metal and solo Devin Townsend for a mix of SYL and TDB.

I don't know how you feel towards sludge/doom metal, Crowbar is always good, Soilent Green and Down.

The Haunted are pretty good, you got the Marco Aro fronted albums The Haunted Made Me Do It and One Kill Wonder which vocally are more death metal-esque and the Peter Dolving fronted albums The Haunted, rEVOLVEr and The Dead Eye which are vocally more melodic.

Lemme pimp for Celtic Frost's recent Monotheist - gets a bit samey by the end, but fucking brutal riffage and cookie monster vocals by the guy who pretty much invented them.

Good picks here. I'd add local northwesterners Agalloch and Wolves In The Throne Room. Keep an eye out for the debut of Oakhelm featuring members of Seattle's Wormwood and former members of Portland's Fall Of The Bastards which should be out in the next couple of weeks. If you listen to Pelican and like it try their earlier incarnation Tusk. I'll ditto the recomendation of trying anything on Southern Lord.

Doomsword is great and the last two Neurosis records were killer. If you like metal more Sabbath or Deep Purple like try Manilla Road. You may dig Grand Magus, sorta Danzig-ish with a richer bottom end. For prog metal try Slough Feg, proggy with some celtic folk influence mixed in. There is also Giant Squid on The End Records. How can you not like anything by a band called Giant Squid? Seriously I'd actually suggest going to The End Records web site and pick up anything on their label or in their mail order catalog that looks as if it may float your boat. Maybe check out the bands Ulver and Sigh, too.

I forgot to throw in Corrosion of Conformity, great southern metal band. I prefer Pepper Keenan's over the other singers, I'd recommend Wiseblood, America's Volume Dealer and In the Arms of God.

Also, the Dethklok Dethalbum is coming out this September, Brendon Small and fucking Gene Hoglan "The Atomic Clock". That album should be awesome.

COC is good. And liberal. Not that either has anything to do with the either, but worth mentioning.

I can't recall how recently Animositosomina was (probably a bit too long ago for my comfort) but while it was indeed a tad tinny on the high end it hardly lacked bottom.

Yeah, that was the last album of theirs I bought. Dark Side of the Spoon had that same tinniness too, in addition to being a really shitty record. At least Animositosomina wasn't bad other than the weaker production.

You'd dig the vox. Very Monster Magnet like. The End records has a play list of stuff you could sample, Giant Squid, Agalloch and the like. Or Myspace is good for giving advance listens to potential bands of interest.

Neurosis has been my favorite metal band since I discovered them a few years ago. In my opinion, they completely blow away Isis, Pelican, and every other similar band.

Through Silver In Blood, Times Of Grace, A Sun That Never Sets, and The Eye Of Every Storm are brilliant. I hear the new one is just as good, I'll get it as soon as I come across it in a store.
I hear many good things about the new Neurosis record as well and plan on picking it up as soon as I have some extra cash.
