I need metal that doesn't suck. - Page 2

I personally like Enemy of the Sun from Neurosis. Also, DevilDriver's new one The Last of Kind Words is really great.

I second the Neurosis love. And I totally agree with the Big Business recommendation.

Personally I recommend anything from Pig Destroyer, I also recomment most everything from Today Is The Day, with the exception of Sadness Will Prevail. But I think Temple of the Morning Star is their best.

So here's my question: Where did you guys first hear the bands you're suggesting?

I thought I was a pretty big metal fan, but I've never heard of most of the names being listed. Pig Destroyer???

Avenged Sevenfold is a fucking joke, and in answer to Chris: Pig Destroyer is getting pretty big and to stay on top of the world of metal bands, one pretty much has to eat and drink the stuff most of the time (since it seems as though there are 30 new bands popping up every day). I hear about many new bands from the Forum at Bravewords.com. Also Blabbermouth.net and metalrules.com (but there are many, many others). Also print magazines such as Revolver and just following links around Amazon, Wiki and iTunes. In addition: friends in real life and "friends" online, sharing and trading and commenting and discussing.

This might be a bit of a loaded response on this site, but White/Rob Zombie is something to explore if you're not already familiar (specifically White, for this thread).

Thanks. I'll have to check out those sites more often.

My God, it's full of suggestions. Thanks everyone. I have a lot of downloading (legally, I assure you) to do.

Few points to address.

--Monster Magnet's been going downhill since Powertrip. I still love that band, but, they're falling off.

--Slipknot's my guilty pleasure metal band. There's so much about that band that annoys me, but they're good for a quick, sloppy, effective dose of blind insanity. Subliminal Verses, however, was a genuinely solid album, though. If for no other reason than there's more than one song where you can actually tell there's 9 guys in that band.

--Musically, Mastodon is excellent, but their vocalist doesn't quite do anything for me. More information is needed.

That said, they also single-handedly justified the existence of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie.

--I keep meaning to pick up a God Forbid album (WSOU was pushing them and hard for a long while), and failing at it every single time. I think now's the time to rectify that.

--I should be done with Killswitch Engage, since, as good as Howard Jones has been, Jesse Leach is a much better fit. But dammit, that shit just SOARS. I can't hate a metal band that manages to send the listener on that big a high on a consistent basis. I'll give Howard's old band a try though.

--Isis: Metal To Fall Asleep To. That's a compliment, I might add.

--For my money, Fear Factory's made only one really good album, and that was Obsolete, which I hadn't listened to in too long, and now I'm on a kick.

--If you own one Hatebreed album, you own them all. I have Rise of Brutality. I need nothing else.

--The Sword wrote Freya. On behalf of Guitar Hero fans the world over, I see their guitarist, I'm punching him in the fucking mouth.

That is all. On with the downloading.

Not really - I'd agree that God Says No was disappointing, but understandably so - apparently all the stuff Wyndorf had written/demo'ed for the album was swiped a coupla weeks before they went into the studio, so GSN was kinda thrown together at the last minute, and it pretty clearly shows. I thought Monolithic Baby was maybe a notch below Powertrip in terms of songwriting strength and attitude, which ain't that bad of a place to be.

If you haven't already, you should check out Jesse Leach's new band Seemless. It's really more hard rock than metal, but it's pretty great none the less. Definetly check out Blood Has Been Shed.

Also, if you haven't heard Strapping Young Lad, start getting their shit now.

Why? Is it really difficult?
It's repetitive and ANNOYING. I can't figure out what the bigger crime is. The Green Orange Blue chainsaw-fucking is not something to be appreciated, but scorned.

I would've preferred Iron Swan if they absolutely NEEDED to put a The Sword song on there.

I posted it somewhere else- but here, look what their music makes people do- http://youtube.com/watch?v=3wPqaYnrPM4

One of the few bands I believe's gotten better with each album. Their latest is their greatest. Definitely try it out.

Wrong. If you only own one Hatebreed album it should be Satisfaction is the Death of Desire. Still their best work. Every album since then has been a worse copy.

Agreed, I've only seen them live once, but people were jumping off the ceilings. Literally grabbing pipes on the ceiling and swinging into the crowd. Also, Lamb of God is another band thats been getting better and better with each album.

The only album of their's I own, no point to hear anything else.

Pig Destroyer (again). I saw them a few weeks ago and it was awesome.
The Red Chord
Crowpath
Ed Gein

These all fall into sort of a grindcore sub-genre. I like my metal fast and technical.
