I just bought INLAND EMPIRE at my local Best Buy

And if they've already got it for sale in Birmingham, Alabama, there's a reasonably high chance it's for sale in other places.

It's got a different cover than the one pictured on Amazon, and I haven't watched it yet (work tomorrow, early) but I'm losing my mind with anticipation.

Just a heads-up in case anyone's near a Best Buy and curious about the new David Lynch.

Well, we all know they can't read in Birmingham, Alabama. Their calendars are useless. Useless, I say!
Hell, this last week in my neck of the woods, Wal Mart broke street date on the Elvis movies and Hastings broke street on the Darkman Trilogy.
I'll see a street date break every once in a while, but it's rarely something worth getting (especially since the items aren't at their sale price yet). Finding discs that have been pulled is far better. I remember when the Criterion Fear and Loathing came out it was delayed inexplicably at the last moment for a few weeks, but thankfully Barnes and Noble still put it out. Then of course there was the time(s?) Ed Wood was pulled, and I was able to find it after calling 6 different Blockbusters after reading online people had gotten it there. Finally there's the Fox Film Noir Boomerang, which I purchased at Borders. Book stores are always good about this sort of thing because either they don't get the same notices that stores like Best Buy get or they're just to slow (that's why they've got books in the stockroom that should have been put on the shelves weeks ago.)

Unfair, but probably true.

The last time I ran into a pre-street DVD randomly for sale was at a Publix, and it was Kill Bill Vol. 1, so that was a good day, too.

Good luck, this movie makes zero sense. Lynch has lost his mind. Not in a good way.

Blasphemy, defeatist talk. It's a masterpiece. Jump in heads first and enjoy the ride.
Well, this pisses me off. I wish my local Best Buy employees were this stupid, because I'm dying for this movie.
I love Lynch, but even his staunchest proponents weren't digging too much on this flick. So it's looking like a rental for me. Though it's nice that it's such a loaded dvd, considering the director's mostly anemic dvds.
I've seen the film twice and can't wait to see it again.

Which will be tonight. Thanks for the thread.

After the copy I bought, there are five more in the 'drama' section at the Edgewood Best Buy near East Atlanta.
Alright, I'm off to Best Buy to see if I get lucky.

I did not get it. It's makes "Lost Highway" seem coherent.
Lost Highway is coherent.
Probably my favorite film of the year, yet it does compare to viewing paintings or pictures while on drugs.
I hated Inland Empire the first time I saw it. I'm still not in love with it (I much prefer Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, and Mullholland Drive), but after watching Persona, Inland Empire suddenly made a lot more sense.
Got this today too. I have only had time to watch the deleted scenes piece and the cooking segment. The deleted scenes is interesting and enjoyable at times. It's funny to say, but I can kind of see why these were taken out of the final cut - they don't contain enough of the recurring themes prevalent throughout the film. The cooking thing is fun just for watching Lynch talk, which I always find humorous, and his story about the train to Venice gets intense, and then the hand motions and matching guitar chords at the end is just silly.
My Best Buy didn't have this. Damn them!
I'd rank it pretty low among Lynch's work, but still worthwile. I found that after seeing it, there weren't a lot of images that stuck with me the way there are in most Lynch films. When you think about Mulholland Drive, there's probably several intense images that are burned into your mind. To me, only one from Inland Empire (involving clown makeup)...and I actually wish I could get rid of that one.
I am really looking foward to seeing this again as well. Now if only we could get a region 1 Lost Highway dvd release.

When I saw IE in the theater, that moment made the woman in front of me scream as loud as I've ever heard a person scream at the movies.
When I interviewed Lynch he mentioned that Universal was sitting on Lost Highway, but the transfer is done.
Andre, Universal's HD channel actually aired the new transfer and it looked fantastic. It's pretty annoying that Universal, for whatever reason, is still sitting on the dvd release.
I picked this up at Best Buy yesterday (thanks for the tip). Watching it on DVD doesn't quite have the same effect as seeing it in the theater. First of all, the movie looks great...better than it did on the big screen. While I'd usually say this is a compliment, the blown up-digital camera look of Inland Empire actually helped distort reality and enforce a blown-out nightmarish dream logic look to the whole proceedings. Oddly enough, things in this film are less effective when they're crystal clear (and since this is a direct digital transfer being seen on a smaller screen, it makes sense as to why everything has suddenly snapped into focus). I just don't think it's going to hit me the same way when I watch it anywhere other than a movie theater, which I guess makes it a true cinematic experience (the film literally had me shaking by the time it was over...not many movies affect me physically after watching them).

I went into A BB last night. They didn't have it on the shelves, so I asked somebody to get me a copy from the back. She complied.

I love how the cheap, unglossy feel of the DVD matches the tone of the film. I'm looking forward to diving in again.

Here's the challenge: watch the DVD all the way through without pausing. It's meant to be a test of endurance, I think, and that's part of what you lose by taking it out of the theater.
I still think this film was one of the most exhilarating theatre experiences I had this year. Just a wonderfully dark and lyrical picture which requires actual work by the audience. I'm utterly jealous of those of you who can get this film already, I've got to wait until the 20th to get my copy.

Also, if any of you are interested the Region 2 special Edition of Lost Highway is incredible, fantastic picture and sound quality.

Yeah. The main reason I'm glad I saw this in the theater is because I know there's no way I'd have gotten through the whole thing on DVD. Also, at the end of the film, it felt like there was this sense of comradery (sp?) in the audience, that we'd all endured this thing.
There's so much release of tension in that closing credit dance routine. I really loved it.

Exactly. Especially as it seems to be inching towards some kind of resolution 30-45 min before the end, and you're getting ready for things to wind down, then it all takes off again.
Well, I finally saw this and absolutely loved it. I certainly found it to be the most perplexing thing Lynch has ever done (and that's saying something), but it worked beautifully in its nightmarish way. Afterwards I felt like my brain had exploded.

Oh, and the clown make-up moment almost made me scream in my living room.
We finally had the time to watch the DVD that Yeroc bought, and sure enough, this shit is great. And sadly, I could tell that I had missed out on something by not seeing it in a theater. If only I lived within a 1000 miles of anywhere this played.

You do. It played at the Plaza.

The Region 1 extras appear to be enormously better than the R2- we get more interviews, but we don't get deleted scenes or the behind-the-scenes footage.
I am seriously considering importing.
Ah. For some reason I always forget to check that place when I'm looking up the Atlanta listings. That's a habit I've got to break, clearly.
Is it true that there's a deleted scene of the main character walking into the red room from Twin Peaks?

That was one of those IMDB rumours which I'm sure is utterly false, but it'd be kinda neat if it did exist.

There's also a review and discussion thread up now for the DVD.

Not in this collection.

Red drapes, a la the red room, are all over the film. There's also a sequence in the 'More things' scenes that recalls Cooper walking into/through the Black Lodge. But there's nothing that IS the red room -- zigzag floor pattern, lamp, chairs, etc.

Decent piece (with embedded clips) arguing that the film is made for home video. I thought it was pretty effective presented theatrically, but I can see the point w.r.t. the video quality and the stuff of computer monitors.
I had a lot of hope during the first hour of this movie,
but I ultimately felt that after it was all finished I had watched a terrible film.
There's just too much bad film-student shit in it.

Lynch like nobody else can create a signature mood impeccably, but it needed 45 minutes chopped out.
Particularly all the repetition and crappy crappy shots like the camera shadows all over Grace Zabriski's face and the editing bits that are similar to what I did with 2 VCR's hooked together in 1994.
Some of that Slate piece is pretty good. And another reference to William Gibson.

Just watched the film again, and yes- it feels almost like taking mercy on the audience. Hell of a sense of relief.

Had to pause the thing a couple of times, but this was due to real life butting in.

I just watched this film with a massive group of friends. Three of them left halfway through (the Locomotion pretty much destroyed them for some reason), the rest are all oddly shellshocked, me I'm still grinning like a motherfucker.

It's just such a patently bizarre and odd little film. It's like Lynch is daring us to make something out of the fragments of plot we have. I have a few ideas of some of the plot points, but they're all either too metaphysical or ignore far too much of the rest of the film too make sense.

All I know is that I've now seen this film twice, the first time was one of the best cinema experiences of my life, and the second time was perhaps one of the greatest home viewing experiences of my life. Their's just something inately satisfying about the film, particularly the big blow off at the end when the film closes with a song and dance number.
