Scalped: Indian Country

Folks looking for some gritty crime stories might want to check out this reasonably-priced trade (can be found for $10 or less pretty much everywhere) which includes the first 5 issues of Jason Aaron's new series. As I've described it before, it's pretty much Thunderheart meets Casino. And by that I mean not only the storyline but a relative comparison of quality. Great filthy dialogue by Aaron, terrific bleak art by Guerra, lot of earth tones. Don't know how many people have been on a Rez, but he really nails the depressed economies yet steadfast proud traditions found on them. Just don't expect any politically correct shit herein.

Here's a preview from the first issue way back this spring:

Really fucking good.

Fantastic trade, I've read a couple scattered issues and liked it, but reading the trade just rocked my socks off.

Btwn buying this, the new 100 Bullets trade and the new issue of Criminal today, I had a lovely crime fiction trifecta.

Scalped is great, even if the coloring is a little murky which sometimes makes the characters hard to tell apart

It's one of the books I don't read because of the colouring/art. I just like to be able to tell characters apart.

I gotta say, I really don't agree with these complaints. The colouring may not be distinctive, but the characters do not run to type. None of the 8 or 10 main characters in the story really resemble each other. It's not like Wasteland, where this is a valid complaint - 3 or 4 light- and long-haired white guys running around in B&W. But, even if this was the case the quality of the writing merits investigation or purchase of the book (as with Wasteland).

A little preview of an upcoming issue, with more great art by Guerra:

I got the trade on Sunday, very good stuff. Although it's clearly it's just a set up to what's coming next and not really a complete arc.

Hope we get to see more of Deputy Falls Down.

Hmm, never heard of it, but it's definitely an interesting concept based on that preview. Thanks for the recommendation.

On an interesting side note, I read a script called Scalped about 3 years ago, a Native American revenge screenplay.

John Siuntres did a terrific interview with Aaron for Word Balloon.

Aaron does not disappoint.

The second trade, Casino Boogie, hits stores today. Better than the first if anything. Terrific intro by Garth Ennis.
