Gretchen Nunziata (1996 - 2007)

My best friend died today. Fucking best animal I've even known and the sweetest Doberman this planet could provide. Dunno if I can ever get another dog after this. She was a diva and her eccentricities no doubt made me a better father and person. I was fully ready for my daughter after her, it was only one of her millions of contributions to my daily life. Man. So fucking hard.

Sorry, Nick. You'll be able to get another dog, though. It might end up being more your daughter's than yours, but it'll be worth it. Pets are good for kids.
I'm sorry for your loss, Nick. I just had my eleven year old husky put down last month, so I can sympathize a little bit.

EDIT: As far as getting another dog goes, there is a possibility that you may get another one. My parents said they weren't planning on getting another dog, but they just adopted a German Shepard pup.
Sorry man. If anything, get another type of dog. Once you get one it's tough to live without one.
Sorry to hear it. I had a doberman as a kid. It sucked when she had to be put down.
We had a rough year with my Rottie's declining health, so I feel for you. Never easy.
My condolences, Nick. I lost my retriever last year, and it broke my heart. Not much else can be said about it.

I had to put a dog down a few years back, a labrador we'd had for ten years. Sweetest, smartest dog I'd ever known. It breaks the heart.
Nick, I'm so sorry. I do think maybe with a little time, you'll want to get another dog. They're so great, and you clearly loved her - don't shut yourself out to the possibility. Be well, I'm so sorry about your Gretchen.
I'm so sorry to hear this, Nick. I have a lot of good memories of hanging out at your house and scratching her behind the ears while everybody played Halo. She was one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met.
That sucks, Nick. I'm sure she knows how much you miss her.

You should get a beagle. Beagles make everything better.

My other dog is a Beagle.

He was Gretchen's pet for the most part.

Condolences -- hard to lose a member of the family.

As Schwartz said, though, it's hard to imagine not having a dog around once they've been part of your life.
Really sorry Nick. I've lost too many pets over the years, and it never gets any easier.
Bummer. Tell me a human has bit the dust and I'll just go about my day. Tell me a pet has died and it'll just about ruin it.

On the other hand, you sound like you really loved and cared for it, and pet owners like that are a rare breed indeed (they make up, like, 13% of the pet-owning population), so I think you should adopt another. Or two. IT'S WHAT GRETCHEN WOULD HAVE WANTED.
Sorry to hear that Nick. Both my childhood dogs died at about the same time a few years back, it sucks.

This may sound like a weird question, but how is your Beagle doing? They can take it pretty hard when a packmate passes away.

Sorry to hear about your dog.
I'm really sorry, Nick. Was a great pup, that one.
She was a really sweet dog. Sorry to hear, Nick. We just got a new dog last week in preparation for our 10-year old dog passing away in the not too distant future.
Gretchen was a really great dog. Sorry that she went.
I thought this might be about your daughter when I first saw the title.

A number of my family pets have passed in the last year. It's really tough, I'm sorry for your loss.

If you do decide to bring another dog into the fold, make it an adopted one. Those types always seem to have a great appreciation for getting them into a good home.
Condolences my friend.
Losing a longtime pet sucks. And to see the outpouring of support is cool especially since everyone has skipped the all dogs go to heaven bit.

I had a miniature Boston Terrier for 12 years that my mom just up and had put down without telling me. I'm still pissed that I didn't get to say bye.
My heart goes out to you and your family.
My condolences, Nick. Nothing hurts quite like losing your best friend. Take comfort (a lot of it) that you gave her a good and happy life with a loving pack.

This is true. One of our dogs we rescued from abusive owners, it was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time to see him grow out of his mistrust for people, and go from being a greasy bag of bones mut to a shiny healthy dog. It was really rewarding. Might not go that way if you've got little kid though.
Sorry, Nick.
Condolences, man. I lost my dog of eleven years not even two months ago. It really sucks.
Sorry to hear about that. Never had a dog myself (we're a cat family), but I always wanted one and got a little upset when my friends' childhood dogs all died a few years ago. At least you still have the beagle, and when the time is right you can get another dog. In my experience, animals of even the same breed have such different personalities that they never replace the great ones, but they do make life more interesting.

I'm actually curious to hear about how the dog helped form you into a parent. I was planning on getting a puppy as a sort of "practice child' a few years down the road, so I want to know from experience if that's a good decision.
She was a sweetie. I am very sorry to hear the news.
Fuck, man. I'm so very sorry to hear that. Gretch was a special one, indeed. So sweet...

My condolences, sir.

Same here. I almost shit my pants, clicking nervously.

Our lil' Yorkshire Terrier (she's called Frida) is pushing around 8 years already. I get kinda worried 'cuz I know she probably won't be around in 2-3 years at most.

My condolences.
That's horrible, I feel for you. We lost a dog (a boxer, which are about the nicest dogs around) to an accident about a year and a half ago, so I know how difficult it can be. Condolences.
So sorry, Nick. I know how it feels. I haven't wanted to have a dog since my family's basset hound, Hannah, died when I was in high school. You love 'em too much when they're around, and mourn them twice as much when they go.

Sounds like she was nothing but a positive impact on your life, though. That's what you'll remember in the years to come.

"I’m goin’ to tell you this jes’ to let you know
Old Blue’s gone where the good dogs go"

Sorry about your loss, Nick, it's never easy losing a pet.
I am so sorry to hear about this, Nick. I'm dealing with my own loss right now, so my heart goes out to you.
Oh, man. My condolences, Nick. We just had to put down the family Golden Retriever (14 years old) last week. It breaks the heart. I'm getting a big picture framed of her today, in fact.
My deepest sympathies, Nick.
Gretchen was just such a great, friendly dog and a huge part of the Nunziata household. Can't imagine that place without her. I'll miss seeing her. My condolences to you and your family, Nick.
Sucks, man. Sorry to hear that.

Sorry, Nick.

Smaller dogs typically lives longer than bigger ones. Unless she's sick, you may have easily 5 years.
That sucks, Nick. I'm really sorry for you and yours.

From personal experience, avoid telling your daughter that Gretchen moved to a farm. My parents did this to me and, having realized the truth approximately 20 years later (yeah, I was a little slow on the uptake), I can tell you the truth was a little devastating.

Again, though, my condolences.
Losing a dearly loved pet is tough...

My deepest Condolences sir.
I feel for you, Nick. I still miss my golden retriever. Someday I'll get another dog, but I don't think anything will replace Ginger.
Sorry for your loss Nick. I have two dogs myself and both are approaching 12. It's tough to know that in a couple years time they'll be gone.
Sorry about that, man.

When we lose a pet it always feels terrible. We always were the superior species, and we always knew we would outlive them.

Everytime a pet of mine died I would feel like I had cheated them, either by not telling them it was going to be this way, or by not letting them in on what the world is about.

Godspeed, Gretchen. If you run into Boris III in dog heaven, rub his ears and give him a gentle crack on the jaw for me.
Sorry, Nick.

I'm neither Nick nor a parent, but owning a dog will help you learn about caring, responsibility, and patience (if you're open to those things). I imagine that's conducive to good parenting. and as a bonus, you'll experience the unconditional love and unwavering companionship that your potential future offspring might never give you. see, with dogs there's no gamble.

very sorry about Gretchen, Nick.
