Indeed. I still miss my Doberman.... and she's been gone for over 13 years.

This is probably the saddest thread I've read here at chud. My dog had to be put down about a year ago, he was about 18, and I had had him since he was born when I was four. You'll never forget the good memories, just use them to wade through the grief. I definetely feel for you, sorry for your loss.

I have always wanted a Rhodesian Ridgeback, my favorite breed of dog. It's a crappy thing to have to replace the best animal I've ever known this way; would have been better for them to be siblings; but I've made the decision. Today we put our deposit down on a lil' gal who will known as Penny. In two weeks she'll be old enough to come home. So, I'm proud to introduce a dog who will never be Gretchen but is certainly going to be getting a lot of love from the likes of me:

Awwwwwwwwwww.....

By the way, the name "Rhodesian Ridgeback" sounds more like some sort of Tolkien-esque monster, not the breed of a cute little puppy. How big is she gonna get?

75-100 pounds.

That's a cute pup, Nick.

My aunt has a couple of Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They're great dogs. Congratulations on the new member of the family.

Nick, she's adorable - I just wanna smooch that little face!

And you're correct - Penny will never be Gretchen, nor should she be - she'll be her own dog. Whenever someone loses a dog, cat or other pet they've loved, and they debate whether they should get another, I always say - there's a puppy (or a kitten, etc.) out there who has a job to do. That job is to help you through your loss of Gretchen, and to become part of your family. Dogs have alot of love to give, and you've lost the dog you were giving that love to, so it seems like a perfect match to me. You're not replacing Gretchen, nor should you. But there's always room for more than one dog in a dog lover's life. By the way, how is your beagle doing? Penny will probably be good for him, too.

That's a nice pup. Never heard of the race, so I'll look into it.

Nick, I'm so sorry to hear about Gretchen. There's nothing like that pain, I know, but you have to believe in dog heaven (I do), and it's a great relief when they're out of discomfort and pain. Your new pup looks adorable. One of my mutts is part Rhodesian Ridgeback (minus the ridgeback) and he's great, so you made an excellent choice.

I was going to say don't rush to replace your pal, but if it will ease the pain, go for it. You're not replacing your friend, just filling her space. No household should ever go without a pet.

Sorry to hear about your buddy.

I just want to cup that babies head in my hands and give it all kinds of smooches.

You have a name for her yet? If not, you should gamble, and let your daughter name her...

EDIT: Never mind, just read your other post above.

Cute Puppy! How is your beagle doing with a new pal?
Congrats on the new addition, Nick. As has been said, Penny can never replace Gretchen. You have plenty of love to spread around though, so I have no doubt Penny will be in capable hands.

Great looking puppy, Nick. Now the fun part begins....watching her personality start to exert its influence over everything/one in the house.

Is your doggy voice the same for her as it was for Gretchen? I've had two dogs...and I used different voices with them. Seemed the fair thing to do, for some reason.

I am not showing that picture to my wife. If she sees that, we'll end up having to get one.

By the way, do you have a good-sized yard? I've heard that Ridgebacks really need to run around.

My sister and brother in law have just got their third sheltie (the most ridiculously cute puppy who we finally got to see this past weekend), and they've had the same voice for all three dogs. It's a hilarious voice, so I guess they subscribe to "if it's not broken, don't fix it." They just got her after their other girl died suddenly back in May.

i just did that and yeah I would say your reservations are correct. that might be the cutest puppy I've ever seen. I never had an animal until recently and it really changed my perspective on animals. they really are like family.
