Oh, and for anyone like eenin's "friend" who has to pay alimony or child support, if you can, always, always, always, ALWAYS pay by personal check, writing "alimony" and/or "child support" in the memo line. Keep a copy of the check in your files, even though your bank will have a copy available, as well. Never, never, never, NEVER pay alimony or child support in cash, as it is difficult to verify the money changed hands should the recipient claim you never paid. If you must pay cash, make your baby daddy/baby mama/ex-spouse sign a slip of paper verifying the receipt of the cash and that it was a support payment.
Verification is the key. If the state gets involved, they will pretty much take the recipient's word as to what money he/she has received and for what purpose, unless you can verify each and every payment amount and what it was for. For instance, if you paid $1,000 cash, he/she could claim that he/she never received it or, if he/she received it, it was for payment of something else besides alimony or child support.
