From the article....

"But one of Bush's most trusted advisors claimed his hand was forced when White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten announced that any senior staff that were working past Labor Day (September 3) would be expected to stay on until the end of Bush's term in January 2007."

Wait, January 2007? Is Bush giving up a year early?
That would actually be 2 years early.

Hooray!

Besides, he's leaving on his own terms. I want to see these guys go out Watergate-style.

Speaking of Watergate, here's Rove on the Nixon campaign trail.

He's interviewed four minutes into it. WEIRD.

I think this video is much more interesting:

I love how his plans after he resigns include dove hunting.

They are the most dangerous game, right?

This is an interesting move, considering that it may make him more vulnerable to subpoenas. As I understand it, Executive Privilege applies so that the President can get unfettered advice without worrying about the adviser spilling his guts to Congress. I haven't checked on the law, but it seems to me that one could make a good argument that this privilege no longer applies once the aid resigns because their ability to give advice will no longer be hampered since they are no longer working for the President. Of course, this will take a SCOTUS ruling. Alito, Roberts, and Thomas will vote for the administration, being Bush family appointees, but that's another rant for another day...

I can't help but always think of Kurt Fuller when I hear about Rove.
The auto-fellating press conference is going on right now. I think I'm gonna lose my breakfast.

EDIT/UPDATE: "Are you crying? There's no crying in politics!" This spectacle is revolting.

If he were to get busted for something (never will happen), he still has a few months left to get that sweet ass Presidential pardon.

I would think that the Executive Privilege stills apply to anything done in the White House. It seems weird that him quitting would make any such information available.
This changes nothing.

That's the obvious counter-argument. Again, if I remember correctly, there has been no definitive statement by the SCOTUS on this issue. I'll have to look it up again.

I think that the only thing that would regain my trust with a new administration would be if they opened all the Bush Administration records (at least those that legitimately don't harm national security) and push ahead with federal charges for any crimes they may have committed while in office. While I can't imagine that ever happening*, I would like to hope that it would.

*Especially if Hillary Clinton/Barack Obama gets into office and pushes some bullshit about "forgetting about the past and moving ahead with the future"

This was apparently written on the chalkboard at the front of a neighborhood bar:

"Dear Mr. Rove, I could use the services of someone with your considerable talents. Sincerely, Lex Luthor."
So, which Republican canidate is he going to work for. Place your bets.
I wonder what unavoidable piece of dirt is coming down the pipe such that Rove feels compelled to practice the better part of valor.

I believe that Executive Privilege is only supposed to be applicable to materials regarding national security.
I hope he dies soon.

You're right, but we don't really know the extent of what national security means since, so far, the executive has avoided a confrontation in front of the SCOTUS regarding the scope of the privilege. Since wheels turn so slowly, the Bush admin knows that time is on its side and it is doubtful that the SCOTUS will hear the Miers or Rove privilege cases any time soon. Therefore, they avoid a potentially disastrous ruling.

We can make a pretty good guess that DoJ shenanigans over using investigations for political purposes, for instance, does not involve national security.

They could've been disastrously held accountable! That would be terrible! Especially for those who think public criticism of the President by other representatives of the people should be verboten.

It's easy to see why so many people make countdown calendars or timers ticking down the seconds until George Bush is clearing brush for a living. The Bush administration is absolutely awful in every single way.
The worst thing about all this is him mentioning he's going into education. It seems like he thought about it really hard and discovered the new big way to absolutely destroy American politics now that Bush is on his way down. Basically he's saying, "I'm done with you losers, now it's time to influence the next generation of Ivy League political consultants and ruin the nation permanently." The last thing we need are his tactics reused by others.

True, but until the SCOTUS says it, it's just lawyers pissing at each other.

Exactly. Even if he were indicted for one of his many wrongs, he would be commuted just as Scooter Libby was.

It's funny, in 50 years, all of this will be taught in schools as a time as horrible as Vietnam, and many people see this today, but not quite enough.

Why do I get the 'Uncle Touchy' vibe from Rove?
