MVP's as of today?

It's gotta be Magglio and Prince, right? If the Marlins were contenders, it'd be Hanley but they aren't. As big a Yankee fan as I am, I don't think Alex is the MVP with Magglio out there.
Since I'm biased Tiger fan, I will agree Maggs is a shoe-in.
hard to disagree with Maggs and Prince at this point. i would have to say because magglio is hitting over .350 he gets the nod. I am also a die hard Yanks fan and i think right now he gets the vote over ARod though not by much really. However Prince is the lock in the NL right now.

It's probably Prince in the NL, although that's mainly from him being the name guy on a first place team. Ryan Braun has been the Brewers best player since he was called up. Braun should be an easy rookie of the year choice.

I'd go with ARod in the AL. He kept the Yankees afloat early in the season. Those wins in the first half still matter.

Jose Reyes?

Thought Utley had a shot before he went down -- was having an incredible season. But yeah, probably has to be Ordonez and Fielder at this point.

Reyes is a good pick, but Hanley owns him this year in terms of similar style players and the Mets have somewhat underachieved a little. I think the Brewers are more dark horsey, which is why I went with Prince. He hurt his stock with that outburst this weekend, though.

Alex Rodriguez outta the AL

Matt Holliday of the Rockies outta the NL

Rockies aren't in contention.

Rockies are only 2 games out of the wild card I think, but Holliday still doesn't really have a chance in my opinion.

Fielder maybe, but the Brewers are fading. If the Phillies can hang in there and Utley comes back strong, I think he still has a good chance to win it.
If you project the stats as they are today ARod would be ahead of Magglio in extra base hits, home runs, OPS, runs, RBI, and both teams would be in the postseason. To me the choice is pretty clear.
Right. I think we get too 'used' to seeing A-Rod's numbers so when he puts up the stats he does, we go 'ho hum' and actively look for someone else who is having a good year. A-Rod is it.
Utley would have to push the Phils to win the division, and even then, he may not take it over someone who played the entire season.

As for Fielder's outburst ... hadn't heard about it! I'm reading about it now, and it doesn't surprise me. The few times I've seen him play this season, he's struck me as a very good player, but a very immature one as well. I can recall a Phils series from this year where he freaked out over being hit by a pitch. It was accidental, and he wasn't hurt -- but he was quite childish about it.

Yeah, but we don't like ARod.

It's a weak year in the NL for MVP consideration. It's still possible for the Brewers to miss the playoffs. With Sori and Ramirez hurt that is less likely.

The 2 top teams, Mets and DBacks don't have guys with the top BA/HR/RBI numbers but if you want someone from a top team then Wright, Reyes, and Byrnes deserve consideration.
Maggs has had a fantastic year, but how the hell can anybody pick him over A-Rod? If A-Rod didn't hit the way he has this season, the Yanks would still be 14 games behind the Sox and 10 out of the Wild Card. The guy kept the team alive single-handedly for two months. Hitting a little over 300. with 39 homers and 113 RBI's.

Maggs will win the batting title, but A-Rod wins the MVP.
Byrnes? I don't know about that. He's having a good year, but most valuable? No way. If him though, why not Aaron Rowand? He's a big reason the Phillies are still in contention. Or even Chipper Jones... Having him back to his old form has really helped the Braves.
The funny thing about Arod... he was hottest when the Yanks sucked... he's cooled significantly since, and the Yanks have been on a terror.

Maggs by a lot.
That's true Boomstick. I don't follow the Yanks but I'd be curious to see what their record would be like without his production during that stretch.

Aside from a few... a very few... key hits this year, he's done an excellent Sammy Sosa 1999-2002 impression.

Yeah, that was a tad harsh.
And one very good distraction that ultimately got Roger Clemens suspended for five games.
Even though Vlad Guerrero is having a strange season, to me he's still the best MLB has to offer.

I'm not a Yanks fan, but I don't see why A-Rod gets no love year in and year out because he's been good for so long. He can't hit one out every at bat. But with men in scoring position he's hitting .304 and with runners in scoring position with 2 outs he's hitting .316 w/ 10 bombs. When bases are loaded, he's batting .364. The guy doesn't deserve the bad press he gets for not being clutch.

Are you kidding.

The Rox are only 2 games outta the Wild Card and 5 outta the Division with 3 games in San Diego and 3 games in LA coming up. They may not make it to the post season, but for the first time in nearly a decade it looks like they are gonna be there right until the end. Kinda like the Phillies last year.

Holliday is at least in the discussion.

There's an interesting metric out there called Winning Percentage Added which takes into account situation play and defense in order to figure out who actually helped the team win. One run batted in in the 9th inning of a tie game counts for more than one run batted in in the top of the 1st, for example. See
http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.asp...=0&season=2007

Here's the Top 10 for the AL
ARod 4.89
Maggs 4.67
Vlad 4.29
Polanco 2.85
Crawford 2.53
Jeter 2.50
Figgins 2.11
Sizemore 1.85
V. Martinez 1.81
D. Ortiz 1.80

And for the NL
Prince 4.36
Bonds 3.81
Cabrera 3.79
Pujols 3.36
ARam 3.14
Holliday 3.12
Hawpe 3.06
Hanley Ramirez 2.98
Utley 2.97
Helton 2.66

I'm a bit skeptical of WPA myself and prefer OPS, VORP, and WARP as I think there's quite a bit of luck involved. That said, if people are going to pull out the "clutch" argument, which is surely situational, this is the metric to look at.
