"The United States has decided to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country's 125,000-strong elite military branch, as a "specially designated global terrorist,"

How very convenient.

And by posting this, it also makes YOU a terrorist.

Hey, by directing that post at me, you've been affiliated with a known terrorist.
See you in a Syrian basement, soon.

Anyone who posts in this thread is a terrorist.

Wait.

Shit.

Except for me. Except for me!!

You, though, they may not put a bag over when they stack you with the other detainees and take the pics.

The rest of us will be hosed, though.

Do you guys have any matches? I just ran out of 'em this week.

Nope. Only C4 and gasoline.
What is the point of this, anyway?

Do we need an excuse to kill Iranian military caught on the wrong side of the Iraqi border?
Just an excuse to invade Iran. They're harboring a lot of terrorists now.

<whine> But I don't want to invade Iran. Let their internal struggles tear the country apart rather than make us the bad guys that unite the country. <whine>

Since when did we need actual excuses to invade anyone?

Average American Idiot #1: "What the fuck? We're bombing Iran? Why the hell are we doing that? Aren't we already in some other wars over there or something?"

Average American Idiot #2: "Didn't you hear? Bush said Iran was harboring a uniformed army of over 100,000 terrorists! Right out in the open and everything! Plus, I think they were just about to nuke Israel!"

Average American Idiot #1: "Oh, they're terrorists? Well, fuck 'em, then. Remember 9/11? That shit was fucked up, man."

Why this designation? From the article:

Quote:
The Bush administration has chosen to move against the Revolutionary Guard Corps because of what U.S. officials have described as its growing involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as its support for extremists throughout the Middle East, the sources said. The decision follows congressional pressure on the administration to toughen its stance against Tehran, as well as U.S. frustration with the ineffectiveness of U.N. resolutions against Iran's nuclear program, officials said.

...

The main goal of the new designation is to clamp down on the Revolutionary Guard's vast business network, as well as on foreign companies conducting business linked to the military unit and its personnel. The administration plans to list many of the Revolutionary Guard's financial operations.

"Anyone doing business with these people will have to reevaluate their actions immediately," said a U.S. official familiar with the plan who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the decision has not been announced. "It increases the risks of people who have until now ignored the growing list of sanctions against the Iranians. It makes clear to everyone who the IRGC and their related businesses really are. It removes the excuses for doing business with these people."
After Iraq, there is no way, no how the American people or government sit idly by and watch us invade Iran for anything less than a direct military attack by Iran on US citizens.

Like the Republican Guard's direct aid and assistance to Iraqi insurgents with training and material for IADs killing Allied soldiers?

I much prefer diplomatic and financial pressure on Iran rather than sword rattling. That being said, whatever works that contains the Iranians until the inevitable collapse of the Mullahs is fine with me.
This likely has nothing to do with invasion, but rather is probably a fairly good political manuever by putting economic pressure on them. If we determine them to be terrorists, they get cut off from the American financial institutions. Additionally, countries that do business with them are also cut off. Pretty much nobody wants that to happen as it means economic doom.

That would be my guess for the reason here. If the UN doesn't come out with stronger resolutions against Iran, this is a method for the US to further leverage the pressure against them on their own.

Anybody starting to wonder whether or not the Bush Administration is being stupid and incompetent on purpose?

Just so everyone is aware, this isn't a one way street of saber rattling:

Iran-Afghanistan-Ahmadinejad
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here Tuesday that rule of Islam on mankind is the only way for salvation of human beings.

"There is no truth on earth but monotheism and following tenets of Islam and there is no way for salvation of mankind but rule of Islam over mankind," said Ahmadinejad in a meeting with Afghan Sunni and Shiite ulama at Iranian Embassy in Kabul.

President Ahmadinejad said nations are today distancing themselves from culture of materialism and selfishness and look for a new way for their prosperity, that is the path of Islam.

He said that the world is on verge of a great upheaval and ulama at this juncture shoulder a heavy responsibility that is introducing genuine Islam as it is.

"Nations today have no haven but religion," the Iranian president announced, cautioning Muslim nations against enemies' divisive plots.

He said, "All of us have the duty to resist the enemy by closing our ranks."
He said that the Iranian nation today feels more than ever the need to stand beside the Afghan nation.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has kindly received their Afghan brothers and will continue to do so in future. Minor issues will cannot affect Iran's policies on Afghanistan," he added.

The president said Islam belongs to all generations and Muslims should get ready for global mission of Islam.

I tend to be of the opinion that this maneuver is to setup a possible attack on Iran under the guise of the administration simply going after the "terruh-rists!" This administration has shown repeatedly that they don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks and stupidly believe that their actions will be vindicated at some point in the future.

"You'll never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people". Or the government, for that matter.

I think we can be forgiven for being just a teensy bit wary of any sabre rattling by the Bush administration.
What blows my mind is how self-righteous blowhards like Bush and Ahmadinejad get their positions of power in the first place when it's clear they do not represent the will of their peoples. You'd think people would be wise enough to recognize a traitor to their national ideals when they saw it...

Is the general population that blind?

And the sadder fact is that the Iranian administration before Ahmadinejad's was actually moderate and was trying to work with the US. Too bad the our administration treated them like shit and the Iranian people voted in someone more hard-line.

Hey, I don't begrudge anyone the right to be wary. This administration deserves heightened scrutiny, particularly when it comes to our Middle Eastern policy. But the majority party in Congress and increasing numbers in Bush's own party are calling for an orderly withdrawal from Iraq. The mainstream media that bought and regurgitated the company line on Iraq and WMDs in '02 and '03 has already been burned. I could be wrong, but after all that's happened, it would take another 9/11 (or something similar) directly tied to Iran to create the conditions where Congress, the MSM, and the public would allow an invasion or attack on Iran to happen under this president

Fear the October surprise.

This is factually inaccurate. The Guardian Council, feeling that the moderate faction was a threat to its power, declared the moderates ineligible to run for election and shut down many moderate newspapers. Ahmedinijad's victory has nothing to do with American diplomacy and everything to do with internal Iranian politics.

Halting production and distribution would cause exponentially increasing oil prices which would in turn wreak havoc in just about every industrialized nation. Sorry, but I would call the ability to collapse trillions of dollars out of the world's economies a fairly big double edged longsword.

From what I remember, the Iranian administration I was referring to was the one that was in power around the time of 9/11 and was working through back channels to come to some sort of diplomatic agreement with the US. I remember reading about how the US administration slapped away all the offers and it was this insult that was used by the Guardian Council to start pushing out the moderate faction which they accused as being responsible as well for allowing Iran to be put into that position (I believe that makes sense).

Khatami and his party were pushed out in '04 and '05 elections when the Guardian Council banned most of his party's candidates from running, then forced the '05 presidential election that brought Ahmadinejad to power. That was due to an internal split. Khatami wanted to limit the power of the Guardian Council to hinder free elections and interfere with legislation. His party's ouster had a lot to do with internal politics and proposed democratic reforms and little to do with Iran's relationship to the US.
