Blockbuster Online Raising Rates - Page 2

Look, I hate to be sitting here defending it when I'm obviously not using it anymore but there's actually very little difference between the two services as far as how renting DVD's goes.

You don't HAVE to return them to the store. It's an extra option that Blockbuster came out with that would let you get MORE rentals for the same price as Netflix.

If you don't want to go to the store you can just put them in the mail and send them back that way. Just like Netflix, if your disc is damaged you can automatically send them a notification on the site and they give you the option of either resending the same disc or just moving on to the next one in the queue.

Really, the only differences between the two services are that BB doesn't have the streaming video for watching movies on your PC and Netflix doesn't have in-store exchanges. Besides those two differences (and the differences in the number of distribution centers) the services are identical.

You can dislike BB as much as you want, I'm not a huge fan of the company either, but they had a product that let me watch a ton of movies for $18 a month (and even let me get a free game rental out of it each month).

No, I understand what you're saying - I know, that BB gives me the option to go in-store or mail. But in my particular instance, the nearest Blockbuster really sucked. Before I joined Netflix, the last time I was in that BB, I wandered around trying to make sense of their mess, seeing nothing I wanted in stock, and getting grossed out by the mildew smell of their water-damaged and caving in ceiling. Just in my personal case - the option of going to Blockbuster physically was more of an inconvience. But I do get your point - it just wasn't a good option for me.

And now, of course, I'm really glad that I ultimately went with Netflix due to the lowered prices vs. BB's raised ones.

I was pretty much a retard when it came to jumping on the online rental bandwagon. For an entire year Hollywood video milked $20.00 a month out of my bank account for their MVP program. For those who don't know, it's a program they have that let's you have up to 3 rentals at a time with unlimited returns, but the kicker is that by the time a movie is in release on DVD long enough to be put on MVP it's practically a GD general relase title. Once I caught wise (I didn't even use the service, but caught it on my statement) I told them to fuck off.

I took advantage of a free trial of BB total access for a month, but I won't pay for it.

I trust enough of you on these boards that I am signing up for Netflix today. I am looking forward to maybe seeing Q: The Winged Serpent or Ilsa, She Devil of the SS for a change.

The irony here being that when the list that had both of those on there came out (as I recall), Netflix didn't have either of them while BB Online had both and I rented them rather easily (even though I couldn't even sit through all of Ilsa).

I've had Netflix for a week. My thoughts thus far:

Their turn around time is a lot better than Blockbuster's. If I mail a movie out on one day, I get the replacement the next day. Blockbuster had probably a 2day lull in between. A movie mailed on Monday might not get a replacement until Thursday.

Supply seemed low too. New releases would stay as "Long Wait" or even "Very Long Wait" for an insanely long period of time. By contrast, I've "Blades of Glory" on the way and it was only "short wait" for a few hours.

I had several obscure movies on request from BB forever, and they never came. "Prince of the City" mailed on Day 1 with Netflix, and the others are all available. BB also had the inuriating practice of skipping movies that were labeled "Available" if they couldn't guarantee them to arrive in a certain time span. Meaning that if it took 3 days to get "Pusher" to me, they'd just skip it it favor of a movie that would reach me in 2 days. Ultra irritating, and so far, Netflix has done right by me.

Really like the "friends" feature, and the "watch it now" feature is very cool for lunch breaks at work. Plus, it seems a lot more movie geek friendly, with better recommendations, better selection (albeit only by a little), and a more manageable queue.

Blockbuster sucks.

I'll give you what you can either take as a word of warning or a recommedation, depending on if you like horrible bad movies or not (and I have Plan 9 From Outer Space in my Netflix queue, so for the sake of argument, let's say it's a recommendation.):

I worked at a movie concession stand my freshman year of college, and it was when Q: The Winged Serpent was in theaters. Pretty much every single time we showed that film, 10 yr. old boys would come out of the theater halfway through, begging us to let them go in and watch the rest of E.T. - not because they were scared, but because they were bored out of their minds. Every kid who came running out of that theater said they'd never seen a more stupid monster movie in their lives. I never saw it myself, but if a monster movie can't keep a 10 year old boy interested, it's gotta be pretty bad.

Thanks for the heads up, but I am determined to watch through the movies I haven't seen on the CHUD essentials list, even if it's a slog for me. And hey, fast forward! Now, actually having them in hand and then in my player is the trick.

Oh, no, I wasn't trying to dissuade you, not at all. I love bad horror films, maybe I should see if I can find that one myself one of these days.
