I just discovered Sigur Ros yesterday...

I can't believe I've been unaware of their existence this long...incredible music...been listening to () and Takk...need to pick up their others immediately...

Can anyone recommend similar music out there?

You're missing out on their album Ágætis Byrjun which is also great. They also have an album released previous to that called Von, but its not like their other stuff and is a bit of a disappointment to most listeners, me included.

Music like Sigur Ros...hard to find! I think a few instrumental rock acts have a similar vibe about them, bands like Explosions In The Sky, Do Make Say Think, Mogwai, and Godspeed You Black Emperor.

I discovered a band earlier this year called Adjagas who I gave 5 out of 5 in a review. They're the closest to Sigur Ros that I've heard, they're Norwegian and have an amazing sound. You can check out their Myspace to hear a few samples.

Yeah unfortunately Agaetis Byrjun isnt offered on iTunes so I have to run out and buy the CD later. I've heard Von is polarizing so I'll wait until I have a better grasp of the band. What about BA BA Ti KI DI DO?

Even then, it's the singer that makes the real difference here. Explosions, Mogwai and GSYBE are all accomplished in what they do, but it's true that it's not the same as Sigur Ros. Of all their album, the orchestral sound of Tall is gripping to say the least.

Agaetis will be worth whatever budget price it must be at by now, it's quite clearly their best album, and they probably won't be as good anymore.

I think they've gotten too enamored of themselves, recently. It all became too freeform and dilluted.

Good for you, Henry. It was about this time last year that I became aware of them because of the CHILDREN OF MEN trailer, and I fell in love. I have Takk and Agaetis Byrjun and I listen to them both frequently.

Welcome to the fold, Henry! And thanks to you guys for recommending a few bands I had not heard of before.

Oh, and check out some of Sigur Ros' music videos, they're like, actual short god damn films and none of the crappy band singing for four minutes shite the networks foist on us. The Hoppipolla (the Children of Men trailer song) video is one of the most magical videos I have ever seen, devastating and uplifting all at the same time.

Say what you will about Vanilla Sky, but when Nosjavelin (sp?) started playing at the end I lost it completely. Perfect music.

As for a recommendation, while I haven't gotten a lot of voiced bands like this (I'm more into the EITS, GSYBE, etc), I'm always one to recommend The Red Sparowes for your listening pleasure.

You should try the group Mum, when I saw Sigur Ros live they were the support act. Similar sort of ethereal, post-rock sound...although nothing really sounds like Sigur Ros.

I gurantee that when you get Aegetis Byrjun one track is going to click with you, and you'll probably recognise it from a ton of films, TV shows.
What does post-rock mean, anyways? Did I miss something? Did rock hold a meeting and say they aren't doing it anymore?

Try and ignore the video, it's the least pretenious and wanky TRIBUTE I could find.

Post Rock was a term originally coined to describe a few bands move away from traditional rock compositions to broader, more instrumental music. It's essentially Prog Rock but with less Wizards.
Well, as long as it doesn't smack of pretention just to further sub-categorize your band to make them seem "edgy" or "hip".

I do enjoy mahself some wizards, though!

I have Takk and Saeglopur saved on my computer but I haven't listened to them yet.

I've been listening to as much post rock as I can get my hands on. I'm into Mogwai, GSYBE, and I'm currently digging Pelican.

Takk is amazing.

Here's the best Sigur Ros music in a movie.

No matter what obstacles present themselves, be it distance, cash or natural disastour or invading hoardes, if you ever get the chance to see them live you must fight away all things that would prevent you from doing so, for its a truly transcendental experience.
They are pretty big here in Melbourne so Sigur Ros play here with each tour, and the live shows are literally breathtaking.
Welcome aboard!
Prepare to defend yourself against people who think you are a pussy for liking this band though. Happens a lot.

You have to try Do Make Say Think, they're incredible.

I also have to highly, highly, highly with all the passion I can muster, recommend Explosions in the Sky. Any of their albums, but especially The Earth is Not A Cold Dead Place. If you've seen 'Friday Night Lights', the movie, they did the soundtrack and it was wonderful. One of the best live shows I've ever seen and they didn't even have any fancy whizz-bang, it was just an electricity that hung in the air. Truly magnificent.

Any good recommendations for songs from Pelican?
I got tired of EitS largely because their music started to sound a little formulaic, The Earth is Not A Cold Dead Place is a fantastic, fantastic, piece of work...but everything else feels really repetitive.
Well, different strokes and all. I have all their albums as writing playlist on my iTunes, so it gets heavy play and...even after all this time, I can still get chills down my spine. Formulaically, yes, they follow a pattern, build up, "explosion", denouement (though I'm grossly oversimplifying it, but I've been at work all day transrcibing), but it's the music produced that continues to captivate me over and over again.

Edit: Listening to some Pelican stuff on youtube...nice. Very nice.

Three Do Make Say Think Songs

http://raiftel.multiply.com/music/it...Make_Say_Think

Like I said, I just found myself being able to anticipate exactly what was going to happen (sometimes note for note) in their new album.

They are SPECTACULAR live though.

I don't know a ton about their other work, but the Besnard Lakes' album from this year, The Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse, has a number of songs that sound eerily close to Sigur Ros ("For Agent 13" probably being the most overt).

It's a very good album, and the band overcomes its occasional derivativeness by not only doing what they do quite well, but by synthesizing their influences. I'd say the whole thing sounds like Sigur Ros meets Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys with more guitar solos. If you want Sigur Ros-like music, you'll definitely want to give it a listen.

I loves me some Mum. There's an accent over the "u" (that I don't know how to type on my keyboard) that's important when seeking them out. There's a house/dance outfit called MUM that can sometimes confuse things.

I really like Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK the most, I think.

Wow! I've been waiting for a thread like this to get started! I've been trying to push these so-called "post-rock" bands on Chewers for a long time; glad to see some of you coming around. There's a lot of great atmospheric music (usually quite fitting for movies, I find).

To those of you who liked Pelican, see if you can find some stuff by a band called North. Their latest called "Ruins" will melt your face. J/K It's fantastic though. Bossk is another (slow and) heavy band that I'm sure you'll probably like.

I don't know why it took me so long to respond to this thread but everyone on here who enjoys Sigur Ros will adore Amiina and their debut album, Kurr.
They were Sigur Ros' support for many of their concerts as well as their string quartet. Plus they arranged the strings on ( ) and some of Takk...
Their sound is subtle and does not reach the epic levels that Sigur Ros tend to reach but it is just as amazing.
