Will this work - Replacing DVD collection...

I currently have a rather extensive DVD collection - all purchased legally. I'm frustrated about the amount of space it takes up and I want to get rid of the collection - but at the same time I'd like to maintain the features and quality of the original DVD's. Would the following solution work - has anyone done it before:

1. I will back up all of my dvd's without compression. The files so far have been bewteen 4-8 gigs.
2. I will purchase a few network terabyte drives
3. I will then network those drives and use my PC's to mount the dvd's and play them

Couple of specific questions:
1. Currently my 300 gig external hard drive does not except single files larger than 4 gigs, is that normal? Will the same thing happen with the terabyte drives?
2. Will I be able to mount a 8 gig file from a network drive and play it without performance issues? On wireless?

Thanks!

Have you thought about just buying a DVD carrying case? Throw the discs in the plastic sleeves, toss out the cases, and you have a hell of a lot more room. Seems a lot easier than transferring all of them to your PC.

Not interested in doing that. Would like the ability to play the dvd's in multiple places within my new apartment without having to physically handle the media.

How extensive are we talking?

Wow. That's so much effort in order to be lazy.

You need to format your FAT32 Drive to an NTFS. That's what's stopping you from doing more than 8 gigs. The downside is you can't switch back and forth from a Mac to PC and vice versa. And I don't know if that changes the speed of your setup. I'm just an entry-level geek.

BTW, that Kaleidescape system looks awesome.

This is a great idea if you want all your discs to get scratched to shit. Beware!

I don't think mounting the file over the network should cause a performance problem. The remote system will only fetch the data it is using at a given time (the portion of the video currently playing). It is hard to say with certainty since you're dealing with such large files, so I would recommend doing a test run with the first DVD you rip to see if it actually works in practice. Also, can I have your DVDs when you are done?
