Movies that you are so glad to own...

Thread Starter
I was watching HELLBOY the other night and I realized that I don't know what I would do if I didn't own this movie. If I couldn't put it on all of a sudden if I felt the need. I'm sure many of you have felt this before when watching a movie you own. I feel this way about a couple movies:

HELLBOY
THREE KINGS
SEVEN
BRINGING OUT THE DEAD
HACKERS
HUDSON HAWK
LAST BOYSCOUT
AMERICAN PSYCHO
GHOSTBUSTERS
BOURNE SUPREMACY
THE INSIDER

I guess it could be not really the film itself, but maybe the way that particular film makes you feel, like no other one does, and how you become attached to that feeling. Or maybe they're just movies that you love everything about, no matter how many times you watch them, you never find a fault, you're just constantly finding things to love and admire; and that comforts you, knowing there's a movie that no matter how many others you see, how much they dissapoint you, let you down, confuse or anger you, it's OK, because at least you own this one movie, that makes it all go away and re-insert joy back into your life.

Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Requiem For A Dream, The Hours and My Girl, obviously.
I thought Requiem For A Dream was great and all, but what sort of mood makes you want to watch it? Last time I watched I was extremely depressed afterwards.

I'll add Shaun of the Dead to the list.
Shaun of the Dead, Rushmore, Brazil, Ocean's Twelve, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Hudsucker Proxy, Election, The Aviator, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

It's a good movie to get high to.

I'm so glad I own Mondo Cane and Troll 2. Two films that are great to watch with big groups of people. I especially love Mondo Cane's 12 minute drunk German segment. It's more "What the fuck???" than anything else I own, and I own Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai in the 8th Dimension.
Goodbye Lover starring Patricia Arquette, Ellen DeGeneres and Dermot Mulroney.

Also, The Warriors.

That last post is in desperate need of punctuation.

My list would include El Topo, The Holy Mountain, The Private Eyes, Conquest, and Revenge of the Ninja.
I'm glad to own every single film in my DVD collection. I wouldn't have bought them if I didn't want the luxury of being able to watch that particular film whenever the mood struck me. I don't have an expendable income to just blind buy a DVD, watch it once, and then forget that I own it. I watch a large amount of films through Netflix, and if the film strikes me as something I absolutely must own, then I buy it.
I went through a spell in college where I could absolutely not go to sleep without putting on Happy Gilmore first.

I don't how I forgot HEAT. I just really do not know.
Shut up, Ralph. SIT DOWN!!!!!

Also: DONNIE DARKO, CASINO, T2, and yes the first Ninja Turtles movie. It is monumentally satisfying.

If this were GREAT MOVIES YOU'LL NEVER WATCH AGAIN, my list would go something like: Requiem for a Dream, Dead Man's Shoes, The Aviator, A Beautiful Mind..
I own a lot of movies, but I despise all of them.

Torque. I think I have put more mileage on that DVD than any other DVD I own. On VHS I'm going Night Warning and Abar: The First Black Superman.

This is exactly what I was going to post. I don't think I even understand the subject of this thread. If I wasn't happy to own something, I wouldn't own it.

Besides, I just love threads that give the lame-asses an excuse to pop in, vomit up a list of titles, and scamper away again. Just makes for riveting reading and discussion, don't it?
Well, in all fairness to the original poster's intent with this thread, I think it may just be a case of poor wording. I'm glad to own all of the films in my collection, but there are films I own that I find more comforting to watch than others, even though I consider them all favorites. I'm glad to own Irreversible, but I'm more likely to throw in Ghostbusters ,The Godfather, or Lawrence of Arabia if I'm in the mood for "comfort food." Films that I have loved for as long as I can remember and am now glad to have in a format that I can watch repeatedly without the fear of wear and tear. But then again, I'm a strange fucker, and sometimes I'm in the mood to watch a guy get his face bashed in with a fire extinguisher.

Uhh, I rented American Psycho like 4 or 5 times. Now I own it. It was a decent idea. A good investment. Is this a joke? Are you telling me the concept is that hard to understand?

Also, you're a miserable fuck.
As worded, it is hard to understand. Do you own films that you aren't glad to own?

Actually, I'm quite happy. Thanks for your concern, though.

I own about 600 movies. I'm happy to own all of them. Why would I own a movie that I wasn't happy to own? Do you own any you wish you didn't?

Also, you're a moron.
I wish I didn't own From Justin to Kelly.
I wish you didn't too.

But it's like the Ring. I can't risk letting it into anyone else's hands.
Was it a gift? Did you find it lying on the street? You didn't actually run out to purchase it, did you?
My sister did. Then the cunning bitch left it with me and moved.
Well, that's different. I wouldn't say you own it. It owns you.
The Stunt Man 2-disc,baby! Woooooooooooooooooo!
All of the James Bond movies (I know it's a cheat, but I can guarantee a film in that set will put a smile on my face no matter what mood I am in).
For a Few Dollars More (one of the best movie friendships ever).
The Searchers.
All my copies of Michael Mann films (see "James Bond").
The Incredibles.

I own close to 1000 movies. One of them is a french movie called L'Empire des loups. If everyone here were to watch it, it would probably rate slightly higher than From Justin to Kelly. I bought it because the cover looked cool, Jean Reno had this blond haircut thing going. I hate the fact that I own this, as it takes up space, making me find other space for my more cherished dvd's.
So if you can imagine that incredibly complicated situation, you can also imagine a movie that is the complete opposite. A movie that you are glad to own. That gets a lot of mileage. Whatever.
So that's one movie you wish you hadn't bought. Maybe a better title and subject for this thread would have been:

Why Do I Own This Piece of Shit Movie?

or

Films You Regret Buying Sight Unseen

Or perhaps a more appropriate title for this particular thread would have been:

What Films Do You Watch The Most Out Of Your Collection?

I mean, aside from that one Jean Reno film, aren't you glad to own the rest of the films in your collection?
I own a few movies I wish I didn't. At least, I'd rather have their dollar value in cash than the disc. Such films include LETHAL WEAPON 4, the first season of MACGYVER and DIE ANOTHER DAY.

Then there are the movies I'm so glad I got when I had the chance, or for that low low price. Like that cheap double-pack of BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS, or the DIE HARD 2 I found in the bargain bin, or those discs of THE PERSUADERS, 200 minutes each, that are going for $1.50.
Arrested Development seasons 1-3: Every time I laugh. Everytime I usually am able to get someone new to watch with me and make a new fan.

Batman Begins: Batman how I wanted him to be, the story of triumph in dark times (yeah due to some thing that happened in my personal life*)

Casino Royale: Its the performance of Craig, especially near the end where he goes from psycho killer, to sobbing and confused when Vesper dies to the scene where hes on the phone with M playing with his toes. Not to mention its Bond, I mean, who doesn't enjoy a good Bond movie everyso.

Zoolander: I know its dated, but me and my friends had a blast at the theater and still keep quoting it to each other. Sentimental value.

Ninja Turtles: The Movie: The first one is the best, grew up with it, still love it. In fact, I'm gonna go watch it after this post.
I'm pretty happy about every movie I own. I mean, sure there's a few films I can watch more often than others, but I don't have a single disc in my collection that doesn't belong.

Thank Christ I sold Glitter.

The Aviator is totally rewatchable, and I've seen Requiem probably 15 times now, 2 of which were in the theater.

The other problem is that "Movies you're glad you own" is functionally identical to "Your favorite movies".

I think having a few really goofy movies on hand - ones that you actually like, of course - is good. Three of my favorites that I own that many people laugh at me for are There's Something About Mary and both Legally Blonde movies. I saw There's Something About Mary right around a time in my life when I was coming out of some really bad personal bullshit (a bad breakup, going through total war at my job till I finally quit, and my apartment being robbed, all within a month and a half of each other) and heading into some *much* happier times, and I always remember that, so I get where you're coming from with the sentimental value.

And the Legally Blonde movies - I literally walked all over the city till I found both of those on DVD; my brother had just died, and let me tell you, I was willing to slap down my money on *anything* that would have made me laugh. I wasn't exactly discriminating at that point. And they did the trick - I enjoyed both movies enough that they helped me laugh during the worst time of my life. So yes, I do think they're cute, I do think they're fun. They're not cinematic masterpieces (although Elle cracking the murder case by the rules of perm maintainence is hilarious), but they're both still my go-to movies when I need to cheer up, but don't want to think too much about it.
Another way of looking at this is a DVD you bought that is now hard to find or OOP, which at one time for me, would have been the 2 disc Big Trouble in Little China and Little Shop of Horrors.

They are both realatively easy to find now. But for a while you couldn't get either for less than $50.00 used.
This thread is making my head hurt.

I own GYMKATA and THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC. I am glad to own them both.
Let me tell you, I almost never saw my favorite movie.

I was at blockbuster and the manager was selling VHS movies with no box (just the cassette) for $1.50. I had heard of it but never saw it thinking it was one of those crappy-romantic-comdedies-with-a-crime-twist kinda flicks. So i bought it and was introduced to the greatness that is Grosse Point Blank. I can never get enough of the quirky dialogue. So, if it wasn't for the Blockbuster manager selling that movie for such a low price I would have never become such a John Cusack fan and therefore would have never seen the greatest relationship movie of all time: High Fidelity. I go to sleep to one of these 2 movies every night since.

Grosse Point Blank and High Fidelity = my go-to movies

There it is.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Big Lebowski. I would've, but I just milked the fuck out of that movie so much, to the point that I don't need to watch it again for a while.

I'll eventually add 300, Crank, Smokin Aces, Hot Fuzz and Zodiac.

I like the fact that people like the first Ninja Turtles movie. It really could have been much, much worse.

Oh, and I was in a cheap 80's horror phase until lately, bought a LOT of crap, and I can definitely say I will never watch Creepozoids, Zombie Holocaust, Demons 2, Deadly Spawn, and similar ones ever again. I will watch Burial Ground again though.
