Movies that you are so glad to own... - Page 2

If we're talking "movie that cheers you up, so thank christ it's on hand", I'd go with Tombstone. I just love the goddamn thing. Eminently watchable from front to back.

As for movies I blind bought and kind fo regret it - Thriller - A Cruel Picture. I'm "glad" I saw it, but not sure when I'm going to ever be in the mood to watch it again.

"So Phil, why do you have it?"

Well, I like having certain movies on hand to loan to friends, so we can then have discussions about the film. This rule applies to films I love as well as ones I can barely bring myself to look at a second time.

Nice choice, that one. For me, there's a difference between "movies that cheer me up" (Legally Blonde 1 & 2), "movies I love for sentimental reasons" (There's Something About Mary), and "movies I'll just watch no matter how many times I've seen them, even if they happen to be on TV and I own the DVD" (Godfather I & II, Jaws). I have my favorite movies sort of categorized - didn't even realize that.

I think I'm confused about this whole thread. I'll take another stab at it.

The unkind RepDeity doesn't think you two deserve more rep from me. I want you two to know that I disagree.

Same here for your creative spin on the rep speech. I will give you random rep in the future for a random post and say only "IOU"

It always warms my heart to glance at my collection and finding that golden strip that signals the presence of my Lawrence of Arabia.

It's a movie that I can totally immerse myself in, when I'm alone at home late at night and I feel slightly disconnected from the world. Just trading the moon for a harsh unforgiving sun.

More due to my personal situation and stage in life at that exact time, I also constantly rewatch Something About Mary. Whenever someone glances through ym collectio and goes "Ooh, Something About Mary! What a funny movie!", I always have to fight the urge to go "That's not a funny movie, THAT'S A MNEMONIC EPISODE OF MY LIFE"

I own about 600 DVDs, and I can't say I'm happy to own them all. But there are a couple that are obviously some of my favorite films, but also some good editions or movies I heard good things about and bought unseen.
Some Criterion Samurai Films: Seven Samurai, Rebel Samurai Collection (A great buy, on recommendations from the Asian films thread. A bit expensive, but worth every penny!), Harakiri.

Some classic films that I love being able to put in the DVD player at any time: The Apartment, Brief Encounter, The Killing, The Big Heat, The Third Man, Double Indemnity, The Battle of Algiers.

Some decent editions that I tend to revisit often:
The City of Violence R3 (Good picture, good sound, a fun action film film that brings a smile to my face every time I see it), A Bittersweet Life R3 (Also a very good edition, of a film that is not much fun, but pretty badass nonetheless), Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition 1-Disc with a tin sleeve (I believe they discontinued the DVD-18 version for a 2-Disc one, and I like the edition a lot. Seamless branching multiple versions of the film, including the extra special one that is accessible py inputting 8-29-97 on the menu. DTS ES. The flipside has a world of behind the scenes stuff).

Goodfellas
The Shawshank Redemption
Dawn of the Dead '78

They're all good comfort food.

I was given a couple box sets of James Bond last Christmas, and I'm actively angry to have A View To a Kill in my permanent collection.

Indiana Jones trilogy boxset. THE most amazing picture quality. When Ford's about to cut the bridge in Temple, there's a few seconds where it just looks like a painting.
Mighty glad to have that on hand.

I love the look of that scene. I don't know if it's the lighting or what, but it looks better than anything else in the whole series.

Yeah what is it about that scene? It's actually when he stops running on the bridge, and looks forward. And's he got one sleeve completely torn off, his whip, shoulder bag, hat, tan! everything looks perfect. And it's obviously iconic, definitely a capture-the-essence moment.

Forgot to mention 24 Hour Party People, plastic face can't smile the white out with the 24 hour par-ty peo-ple

'tis my feel goddamn great movie.

And must buy Human Traffic and PCU cause I know they're already on it.

Well, for a while I was really glad I owned a copy of Hero, but then it finally came out in the States, so I wasn't special anymore.

I also like owning that weird version of Usual Suspects that came in the weird case made of hard plastic where the disc slides out of the bottom. That was the first DVD I ever owned and they must have still been experimenting with case designs.
