U.S. officials rethink hopes for Iraq democracy

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Nightmarish political realities in Baghdad are prompting American officials to curb their vision for democracy in Iraq. Instead, the officials now say they are willing to settle for a government that functions and can bring security.

"Democratic institutions are not necessarily the way ahead in the long-term future," said Brig. Gen. John "Mick" Bednarek, part of Task Force Lightning in Diyala province, one of the war's major battlegrounds.

I can already hear Jon Stewarts voice repeating that.

Look for the exit plan to be announced in Spring 2008 and the troops home by election time.

So a government headed by a strong-man who rules through intimidation. Wow, did everything go all shimmery there for a minute?

Dammit! Has Saddam been dead too long? He seemed to be doing a pretty good job holding the country together. OK, so rape rooms and whatnot, but the trains still ran on time! Call his people, see if he still wants the job.

Are you kidding me? Bush is doing everything in his power to make sure this war DOESN'T end on his watch. He doesn't want to be responsible for the starting of and the ending of the worst foreign policy decision in U.S. history! If he avoids withdrawing and makes the next sucker do it, he (and Republicans) can always blame someone else.

If these aren't just throwaway comments by a frustrated man and seriously mark a change of direction in US policy, I'm gonna have a stroke.

If I was an Iraqi, no matter how moderate, I'd be seriously tempted to try my hand in IED creation as a hobby. And we wonder why Arabs hate the West. It's the same shit we've been pulling for ever.

You're right. I blanked out there for a second and forgot who we were talking about. I just hope that whoever does come in afterwards and starts the removal doesn't start talking about some "Let's get together and hug" bullshit ala President Ford.
