Teen Christians campaign against pop culture

Quote:
(CNN) -- At one point in Jared Hutchins' young life, the Beatles were a big problem.

"I had to stop listening to them for a while," said Hutchins, who lives in Cumming, Georgia, and plays the piano, guitar and harmonica. He said the group's world view "had a negative effect on me," and made him irritable and angry.

"God owns my life, not the Beatles," he said simply. Although Hutchins said he enjoys a wide range of music -- from Pink Floyd and Arcade Fire to Christian bands such as Hillsong United -- he said he has to be careful of what music he listens to, for the same reason he temporarily turned off the Beatles.

***

Today's teenagers are in crisis, he says.

"We're fighting for those who don't know they have a voice, that are being manipulated by our pop culture indulging in things that, really, they're not mature enough to be thinking about yet," Luce told CNN.

"Kids are hurting," he said. And of those who he feels inflict these moral wounds, Luce said, "We call them terrorists, virtue terrorists, that are destroying our kids."

"They're raping virgin teenage America on the sidewalk, and everybody's walking by and acting like everything's OK. And it's just not OK."
I don't even know how to begin to reply or comment on that.

It reminds me of Patton's "Earth-2" skit on his new disc, kinda.

Wait a minute. Aren't you still blacklisted from chud?

In my defense, Teenage America was looking like she wanted it. Why else would she dress like that?

Someone better not show that kid the Chinatown scene in Crank or his head might explode.
Probably the first time I've heard the Beatles demonized by teens. Time to give this one the reverse "Logan's Run" treatment.

Looks like someone dunked their head into the KoolAid again and forgot to come up for air.

They just need to pop in Sex Type Thing and sit back and enjoy it.

Damnit, the very existence of the Beatles proves there IS a God!
Jared Hutchins, YOU MADE GOD CRY!!!!!

who wants to bet that the name Ron Luce will be making headlines in the near future for some very unchristian like activities??

That guy was featured in the series of documentaries CNN is running on the major religions. Scratch that. The crazy crazies in the major religions. It's a real good way to get angry and depressed about how fucked up our world is. Thanks CNN.

There was one where they interviewed this woman (beautiful in a way, too) who's Muslim and she recalled going into a supermarket or retail store wearing her custom full-body dress that covers her completely and this one guy was singing Christmas carols and when he saw her he sang "12 Days of Christmas" but with violent and racist lyrics against Muslims. She got pissed and asked him if she looked like a terrorist and the guy replied "What else does a terrorist look like?"

I really really really REALLY truly and honestly think these people should be slingshot into fucking space. I get so fired up reading ignorant bullshit like that that I almost have to force myself to take a time-out.

Don't cry
Don't raise your eye
It's only teenage wasteland

The word "terrorist" has become totally debased. Nowadays you can call your mother a terrorist if she insists you go up and clean your room.

God is stupid, Christians are lunatics, they're so stupid, we're so enlightened, Chud anti-religion broken record.

Is it such an unhealthy thing to live without Pop-Culture?
I daresay the people who can block out distractions have in many ways a more fulfilling life than the media-overloaded majority in the 21st Century (all of us).

Plus - I don't see people calling the Amish scary and foolish.

The Amish are scary and foolish. Grow full beards dammit. And Mennonites...your day is coming too.

There's a difference between blocking out distractions and declaring the Beatles to be the agents of the devil.

The Amish are not particularly scary, but definitely foolish.
I think what makes the Amish non-threatening is that they seem to have no desire to convert us to their technology fearing ways. I just want to enjoy my filth in peace without people fighting to take it away from me.
Wait a second . . . why are the Amish foolish again? What particular criteria determines that?

I got stuck behind some Amish people at a Burger King one time. They were scary but far from foolish. If anything, they were cunning and dangerous.

Anyway, this IS fucking nonsense. I grew up in a rural southern town and during high school (and seeing as I graduated over six years ago I can only imagien that the occurance of such things has increased), just about everyone you know becomes a born again fundamentalist Christian at one point or another (most of them don't last too long, instead leaving for the greener pastures of getting laid, but some stick with it.) and it's scary. You see them trying to reprogram themselves. They literally start rejecting everything about who they used to be. They get together and have bonfires where they burn CDs and movies and posters and clothes and talk about how they were leading sinful lives.

I lost my best friend to it, actually. He went from a classic rock loving horror movie fan to someone who only listened to contemporary Christian rock and rejected anything featuring anything remotely supernatural as sinful and satanic. What had been a years long friendship ended with us never speaking again because of his total denial of the person he used to be. (and I'm just using those things as illustrative examples. He changed much more about himself than his choices in consumable media.)

So what you're talking about (a life without pop-culture as a form of personal advancement or enlightenment) isn't what they're talking about (a total rejection and denial of the reality of the world around them in order to put themselves above others.). It's extremely, completely fucked up. It isn't healthy, and in a lot of ways it probably falls just short of brainwashing.

And I say that as someone who believes that religion has it's uses. I've known too many good, intelligent people who believe in God to lump all of them together. But what we're starting to see now, this massive increase in fundamentalist thought, that's something else entirely. And it's frightening.

They deny themselves things that are good. They do this for no particular logical reason.

Fools, they.

For whatever it may be worth my jab at him didn't come from anti religious sentiment.

I just feel that when you look at the hardships and adversities people face, whether it be holding on to their better qualities when confronted with the true horrors the world has to offer, or their ability to remain optimistic despite being put in a wheelchair or worse, or the dignity they are capable of maintaining in the face of a terminal illness. To suggest that the human soul is a fragile thing that needs to be wrapped up in cotton wool is a little insulting, and there for laughable.
