The Many uses of Netflix

Thread Starter
so, probably the best gift i recieve on my last birthday (definitely, i suppose, since it's the only thing i remember) was my very own subscription to netflix. Now ordinarily i use it to view all the indie and genre films my family would never watch given the choice. But, every now and again, i use at a means of spending time with dear old dad. A few months a go i rented Westworld, a movie he always talked about but never watched since a kid. Tonight, Phantasm arrived and it falls into the same Father category. We're going to watch that one now and i have higher hopes for it than Westworld.

I guess that was a pretty self-fulfilling post there, so i open the thread up to everyone else as a general discussion of Netflix use.

I use Netflix just to give my Mailman something to do.

I watch them alone to remind myself how much I hate my father.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Not really, though. I don't have netflix.

I rented Westworld a few months back off the 'Flix. It was great stuff. Yul Brenner is creepy as shit in it. Phantasm is a classic too. I'm pretty sure my dad wouldn't be a fan of it though.

I use Netflix to taunt my dad over how many more movies I'm seeing than he is. He's 80 - he tends to doze off.

I like to teabag Netflix DVDs and then scour the internet, looking for people who've rented my teabagged movies.

It'll be great when my kid gets a little older so we can have some Father-Son Phantasm.

I use the never ending string of DVD's to generate an endless army of creatures in Monster Rancher.

WINNER!

I use my Netflix DVDs in an endless series of one single interesting drink coaster after another. I can never get a set of six for when I have guests because I have to keep sending one coaster back before they'll send me another new dry coaster. I really should join the unlimited plan.

I know a use I would like to have for Netflix, Instant Watching on my Wii. But that is more Opera and Nintendo's problem I guess. So never mind.

Has anyone else been having problems getting new releases lately?

Usually I'll send my movies back on Friday or Saturday if I want to get a new release on Tuesday and avoid a VERY LONG WAIT. But for the past three weeks, Netflix has been sending me movies that are below the new releases in my queue when they get my returns on Monday. This means no Knocked Up, Black Book, 1408, etc for at least a month.

I think they reserve the new releases for new and trial customers. If they already have you as a loyal customer, you get put on the backburner for the new releases.

Or maybe they're still mad that you kept that copy of Another 48 Hrs.

Give wade a break on that one. He was so shocked to learn the true identity of The Iceman that getting the disc back in the mail never entered his mind.

You've got it all wrong, Bob. I sent them my copy of the racist buddy action classic 48hrs instead of ALEXANDER: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT.
They should be treating me like a King!

I'm sure there will be a new 48 Hrs. DVD released soon anyway.
The special Rise of The Iceman Edition.

You're the reason I've been getting the wrong DVDs. You damn dirty ape!!!

It's fun to jump on a friend's computer and go to check your netflix, only to see they're still logged in. And then to put GOOD BURGER and CARE BEARS: THE MOVIE on the top of their queue. Even more fun is when the person just thinks they did it in a fit of drunkenness and can't understand why they chose those movies in particular.

Just sayin'...

Pool Queue (cue)... I see what you did there. Or didn't.

We don't get the beloved Netflix up here in the Great White North.. but I'm curious about checking out our "equivilant" in Zip.ca.. anyone have any experience with using that and if so, would you recommend it?

I'm too lazy to make a new thread about it so I'll hijack this one momentarily, sorry to you Flix'ters..

If it makes you feel any better, he eventually found out and hit me back with Barbie and My Little Pony movies. Now we both logout whenever the other one's coming over.

How so? Receiving GOOD BURGER in the mail would be like an early Christmas.

I just signed up and have spent waaay too much time concocting my list (once I realized it stopped at 500, I added another 500 or so on a Word file), but one thing I was wondering is when a movie listed as a "very long wait" hits the top it'll start sending you other movies below it until it's available, right? It won't just not send anything it its place? The only reason I'm asking is because I remember hearing in the background somewhere people complaining about movies taking forever to arrive via Netflix because of waits.
It used to be that if the #1 movie in your queue had a "Very Long Wait", then it would not ship that disc until it became ready (so you'd only get one disc at a time, since it'd only shi what was #2 on your queue). They changed it a while back so that if #1 isn't available, it automatically ships you #2 and #3 instead.

I think that adding a Very Long Wait DVD to the top of your queue is a strategy for avoiding throttling, IIRC.
