Bubba No-Tep

Well, that's sad. As much as Coscarelli did a great job, people mainly saw Bubba for Campbell. I really don't see anyone else topping or even coming near his performance.

I didn't think a sequel was that a good idea to begin with. The novelty of the original is what sold it. Trying to extend on that would be pointless.

And from what little I've seen of it, Bruce is right, "The Man with the Screaming Brain" does indeed suck.

I can't help but still want to see a Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash film though.

Damn. Bubba Ho-Tep was one of the most pleasant surprises of the last few years. I was looking forward to more.

I can definitely see the character wearing out its welcome in a sequel. Most of of the fun with Ho-Tep was seeing this great American character at the end of his life, sad and pensive. The more I think about it, the few little bits of young Elvis we saw might have been just right. Having a whole film with that character might be too much to take.

Campbell definitely needs another good, solid role to sink his teeth in, though. Those sci-fi original flicks ain't doing him any favors.

I file this under Good News.

It's dissapointing only in that I wanted to see Coscarelli and Campbell work together again, although not necessarily on this property. I hope they find something else to collaborate on; hopefully a project where they see eye-to-eye.

Sad indeed, but let's get Kurt Russell on the phone, stat.

Okay, fine, Keith David.

Agreed. Wasn't a fan of the first one, and I'd hate to see Bruce sink any lower.

I love Bruce. But...when did he become picky about scripts?

I'm glad to hear it too. I thought Bubba was OK at best and wildly overrated. With any luck this will be the end of this project and Coscarelli will get back to PHANTASM 5

A few points:

-This news saddens me a bit.
-I also think Man With the Screaming Brain stinks. And by stinks I mean it is awful.
-I have never seen or even heard of "Burn Notice," but now I want to watch it.

That's all I got.
the first one was the fucking shit. a sequel where he fights vampires in vegas would have had potential. even if it ended up being shitty, that fact that it was made would have counted for something. bruce campbell is just being a bitch. and don coscarelli needs to be a little nicer to people from what I've heard through my hidden sources.
I need to read that book he's writing.

My thoughts exactly.

I am excited to hear he's working on another book though. His first two are great.

It's actually fairly entertaining in a mindless "A-Team" kind of way. A spy washed out of the service (given a "Burn Notice") finds himself stuck in Miami doing odd helping people out missions while he trys to figure out who burned him so he can get back into the service. Bruce is an ex CIA guy who helps him out in between womanizing rich women (so basically, he plays himself)

USA Networks Thursday nights. It's on a couple week hiatus until after the US open.

Hmm...sounds like it could be fun. Unfortunately, I don't have cable, so I'll have to wait for the DVDs. Thanks for the heads up, though, Surge. Very much appreciated.

Have you heard the Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way audiobook? I'm listening to it right now, and it's fucking amazing. That should tide you over, at least...

With all the love for Ho-Tep, maybe I should give it another try. Some friends and I drove down to Atlanta for a screening when the film was released, and the experience was terrible(the friend who was driving was SO PISSED that we missed the 8:00 screening that it made everyone else uncomfortable). I can barely remember the film, except for the Phantasm "homage" where Bruce fights the scarab. I did win some Elvis fridge magnets from whoever was promoting the flick, though.

No idea its on audio. Looks like I have to warm up the old iPod.

Bruce always sells himself as a blue collar, pay check to pay check actor. But he was very proud of Bubba-Ho Tep. I guess he's in a position where he can afford to make this kind of artistic choice once in a while.

It's done like an old radio play. Multiple characters, sound effects, the woiks. 6 cds of goodness.

See, I'm one of those people who LIKES Bubba Ho-Tep, but I don't necessarily love it. It's not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but it is pretty fun at times and has a sort of goofy charm that I find endearing. It's a movie that I often put on as background noise when I'm putzing around the apartment, rather than a movie I put on to sit down and watch.

Having said that, though, I can totally understand why someone wouldn't like it.

Hilarious shit. Bruce's spiral into a morass of big government and spurned fanboys is a thing of beauty.
they should retool the movie for Sinatra or Dino or someone.
That's a great idea. Lansdale should write a trilogy - aging icon from column A fighting an ancient evil from Column B. The 7,000 Year Itch? Sinatra Vs. Frankenstein?

Edit: Realizing by typing this that the article says Landsdale isn't involved in the writing. That's probably not good.
the only worthwhile thing about bubba ho tep was the boner joke that i cant quite remember
post #32 of 36
Very sad news to hear. I'm not sure that a sequel is a good idea anyway. I loved Bubba-HoTep and of course own the dvd. i have a autographed copy of the book --Joe Lansdale and Don Coscarelli. I got to meet Joe Lansdale at a science fiction convention years before Bubba-HoTep was made. The fact that he's not involved with the sequel is just bad news.
One of my favorite experiences with this movie was getting to wear a Bubba-HoTep t-shirt during the run of Bubba at my movie theatre. I was the only one who got to do this and I treasure that time.

I loved Bubba Ho-Tep, and I actually liked Man With The Screaming Brain, but after knowing the trouble that he had to get it made, and having to change major points in the script, I can understand why he wouldn't like it. I really need to get the Make Love audiobook, and this news about his third book, and the title already has me anticipating it.

It's a shame about the sequel, but as already said, he was very passionate about Ho-Tep, and if he didn't like the direction they were going with the sequel, then it's a good thing he's not returning.

A few thoughts...

1. While I'm glad that Bruce seems to now be getting pickier about what projects he signs onto, it's a shame that this was one of the ones that gets turned down first.
2. Lansdale was involved to a certain degree. Supposedly he helped Coscarelli come up with a short outline, which Don used for he and Stephen Romano to craft a screenplay come. So while Joe didn't write the script, he did sign off on the initial concept.
3. Paul Giamatti is STILL attached to this in the role of Colonel Tom Parker, thankfully. He stated that he was disappointed that Bruce had passed, but he still can't wait to make the movie.

So who can be the new Elvis? Off the top of my head, my top two choices would be Kurt Russell and Nathan Fillion. The first would be a long shot, although if he liked the script enough I could see Kurt saying yes. As for the second, well Nathan hasn't got much going on right now since Fox cancelled Drive. While he probably couldn't top Bruce's performance in the first one (most couldn't), I think he'd make for a solid replacement. I bet he'd be willing to do it too.

Whether this was bad news or good news (I loved the 1st one), the article still depressed me. I must be in a mood.
I liked the first one, and it's not as if Coscarelli has a bad history with sequals.

Ah, well.
