Hilly Kristal died Tuesday.

Check it out...

Never got to CBGBs. I always wanted to play there...and so it goes.

CBGB's was a shithole. Lot of history to that place, lot of great bands and shows I saw there, but I was glad to see it go.

I can't imagine why anyone would be glad to see it go. Hilly Kristal, on the other hand, turned me down for a job, so I hope he burns in hell.

As much of a shit-hole as it was, I'd rather have a place where anybody can get a gig and make an ass of themselves as "the next Ramones" (or, if you're opening for the next Ramones, the next Talking Heads) than a place on St.Mark's that sells CBGB tshirts to tweens who think St.Mark's is still cool and who never had to try to use the bathroom at CB's.

I'm another that's sad I never got to play there. I know a few people who did, and told me what a shit-hole it was, but I've played plenty of shit-holes that no ones heard of, CBGB's at least had notoriety.

What's the difference between a Puerto Rican whore and the bathroom at CBGBs?

You can piss in a Puerto Rican whore.

For having lived in NY since '89, I'd never gone there, but a friend of mine intended to take me there in '86 when we were in college and went on a college day trip into the city.

My friend was an actual punk (we were fairly certain he'd go the Sid Vicious route before we got out of school), and I was pretty much your little "suburban punk". Think Molly Ringwald in Pretty In Pink with a little touch of Pat Benetar thrown in (but not enough Pat to be truly cool), and you've got the picture - I was a total wannabe (although I did have the love for the music right at least).

Anyway, "Mr. Badass" (him) had a crush on "Rebel Without a Clue" (me), and wanted to show me all the true punk spots in NYC. We ran into another friend of ours a few days before the trip, and my friend bragged about how he was going to take me to CBGB's. Friend #2 looked incredulously back and forth between the two of us, and then said to Friend #1, "Don't take her there! Do you want her to die?" He never did wind up taking me - we hit some other spots, but not CBGB's.

I hated what that place became. I know they were trying to do whatever they could to pay the rent at the end, but 20 bucks to get in and something like 9 dollars a beer? For a shithole like that? Blow me.

Also, I hold a lot of hate for the poseurs that used to walk around in CBGB shirts without having ever stepped foot in the place. I've fucked myself up more times than I can count on that fucked up floor (worst place to dance) and would never wear one.

I dunno. There are hardly any places to see bands play at in the city anymore, but the whole scene just got tired. That whole area is changed. St. Mark's is fucking bizarre, now. Chain stores and restaurants and shit. Still a few poster and used cd stores left but that's about it. Not a gutter punk in sight.

For anyone who doesn't get this, the bathrooms were probably the most disgusting places you'd ever not want to be. I hear that the ladies' stalls didn't have doors.

Mark Renton would not even climb into a CBGBs toilet.

I actually stopped playing music with the intent to "make it" when I realized that I liked nice sheets and not bathing in the bathroom at CBGB's. But hey, who's counting.

I saw a band there called INSTANT DEATH. The band right after them was this emo group everyone hated, so they all started chanting INSTANT DEATH! INSTANT DEATH!
It was just funny to see the total wtf look on that emo singer's face..
Didn't they open in Vegas for a while or did that never happen?

They needed an opener called "Just Add Water"

The death of Hilly Kristal is just another step in the procession of all these gutter venues dying alongside the aging proto-punks who helped found them. The CBGBs of my city (Winnipeg) is being transformed into a boutique and hair salon, while another ramshackle, cheap venue is being converted into an American Apparel, with only one place left for smaller groups to play. They're calling this progress, but if my town is any indication (I guess I see it as a microcosm of North American cities) there isn't going to be any middle ground between the true dives with bad music and the overpriced arenas taking in long-established acts. So we have to turn more and more to illegal shows, be they in abandoned buildings, warehouses or basements.

I guess you could also interpret this as a sign of the eroding middle class.

First Joey, then Johnny and Dee Dee. Then Cb's. Then HILLY.

Yet Panic at the Disco have yet to perish in a plane crash. Fucking world we live in, eh?
