Buy It

And if you have some extra money, throw in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia as well.

I've been avoiding spending too much on DVDs in preparation for this week. This, The Office, and Sunny are going to set me back a few dollars.

Disappointingly, there's no alternate Rachel Dratch pilot on here.

I missed most of these episodes when they aired, so I picked this up today and have already gone through the first disc. Brilliant stuff. Alec Baldwin's genius goes without saying, but I'm surprised at how well the rest of the cast is meshing together.

Between this, The Office, and Friday Night Lights, it looks like NBC has some classic shows once again.

I did watch the whole shebang as it aired. And while at first I thought the first few episodes were especially weak, watching them for a second time, I realize that they're not weak at all. The difference is that I'm now familiar enough with the characters (which were spot-on from the get go) where I can laugh at/with them more now than when I first watched them.

What I'm saying is that you need to buy this set, because it has great rewatchability.

Actually, I do think Tracy Jordan was a little bit off, initially. he was less warm and less goofy. On the other hand, the second episode has the amazing "Give up the butt!" joke, so I can't really complain.

"i Am A Stabbing Robot"

I think one member will echo me in particular, but watching the commentaries on these DVDs were terrible. I've never heard more silence punctuated by "This show is really funny" remarks....almost unbearably boring.

Sorry to hear that. I'll still buy the DVDs, though.

Sorry to hear about the commentaries. I would have expected Fey's commentary humour to be dry, but not boring.

Still, I'll be happy to own them. As mentioned earlier, the second time through the first episodes (when you know the characters better) improved my already great appreciation.

Bought it over the weekend for the Hell of it. Although I must admit my biases up front. I was a big Studio 60 fan and not a fan of the cast prior to the series (i.e. Fey, Morgan, Baldwin, etc.)

But I gotta admit I warmed up to the show. I'll definitely check out Season 2. Let's just hope people watch. My instinct says this might be it if the ratings don't improve.

Definitely still worth picking up, but the commentaries! OH THE HORROR! I think it may have suffered from having only one person sitting around and talking....whereas in a show like, ohhhh say How I Met Your Mother, the whole cast together made for a rockin' good time...

Did you just unfavorably compare 30 Rock to How I Met Your Mother? If you weren't obviously a mental invalid, I'd execute you for that.

Only the DVD commentaries, my friend. Though admittedly, I am a big fan of both.

I'll back him up on the commentaries, they're hellishly bad. Other than that, I have nothing to add, as I don't watch HIMYM.

"Mother" is a really fucking underrated show -- not as underrated as "30 Rock," but it's still much better than the crap CBS usually puts out.
Does "Mother" have a laugh-track, because for me, that automatically puts it in the never-watch category. Seinfeld was the last laugh-track show I could sit through, but now, I just can't stomach them and I immediately flip the channel when I hear one.

I've seen bits of Mother, and although Doogie was amusing and I really, really, wanted to like Jason Segal, it seemed very generic in the sitcom sense. Maybe I misjudged it, but there's no way in hell that it touches the demented brilliance of 30 Rock.
