The Non-CHUD Fantasy Football Thread

A place for those of us in leagues other than the CHUD ones to share our glory and despair.

The league I've been in for the last five years had their draft this past Thursday. We have a couple of higher-ups from a local golf course in our league, so we get to use their clubhouse after hours and it really makes for a nice setting. We draft auction style, which took some adjusting after being used to a serpentine draft, but it's a lot more fun and gives everyone a chance for the top players if they're willing to pay for them.

We also introduced keepers this year, letting us keep two players from last year for 1.5 times their auction price last year. I ended up with Matt Leinart for a dollar last season and didn't have to think twice about keeping him for $2. I also held on to Jerious Norwood, a waiver wire pickup last year.

Since my starting QB was taken care of for all of two bucks out of a $200 salary cap, my goal was to get one of the top three backs, price be damned. And ended up with Tomlinson for $80 (a dollar more than I had him valued at). I still had some good cash left, but the problem was a lot of owners were being stingy and seemed to be holding on to cash to outbid everyone for those players that fall through to the later rounds. So I held on to mine as well, while some premium receivers went for what looked like bargains (though I feel receivers are a little overvalued based on our scoring). Well, I ended up with $23 unspent, which was a blunder, but not as bad as they guy who was left with almost $50.

Here's what I ended up with (we don't start TEs as a separate position, they count as receivers):

QB - Matt Leinart
QB - Joey Harrington
QB - Chad Pennington
RB - LaDainian Tomlinson
RB - Marshawn Lynch
RB - Thomas Jones
RB - Jerious Norwood
WR - Joey Galloway
WR - Greg Jennings
WR - Mike Furrey
WR - Chris Cooley
WR - L.J. Smith
K - Stephen Gostkowski
D - Cowboys

Harrington and Pennington were picked up for a buck each and are basically only going to see the field if Leinart dies. I'm happy with my backs, but would have liked to have done more with my recievers. Kickers and defenses don't score much in our league, so no one usually grabs more than one at the draft, being content to do a waiver swap in the bye week.

How'd everyone else do?

Oy, I hope the only reason you got LJ Smith was because it was late and worth the risk. It's hard to see him not going down this season. Keep your eye on this guy:

Yeah, he was the highest-ranked guy left and I got him for a dollar.

I also got Michael Turner as insurance in case LT explodes or something.

This was my first fantasy draft ever. It's standard scoring and only a 7 team league. How does it look?

QB - Rivers, Romo

RB - Addai. Westbrook, J. Lewis, Lamont Jordan

WR - C. Johnson, L. Fitzgereld, Plaxico, Reggie Brown

TE - Heap, Watson

D - Broncos, Steelers

K - Rackers (ARI), Akers

I like your receivers overall better than your backs (although Addai and Westbrook are a nice starting combo).

I knew this didn't look right. No Lamont Jordan. It's Thomas Jones

What was your experience like as a rookie auction drafter? Having $23 seems like a rookie mistake that many(me) would make.

With having Leinart with $2 how come you weren't able to get better #1 reciever? Was it worry about spending too much? Did people overspend in the reciever area?

This was actually our third auction draft, but the first with the keepers, and some of us hoarded our extra cash the keepers afforded us too long. There were some sleepers I had targeted that I thought I could get for cheap late, but so many guys had so much cash left I didn't want to lose out, so I held on to my cash too.

As for the receivers, we're not much of a yardage league. Backs and receivers get one point for going over 75 yards, another for over 100, and then one point every 50 after that, and one point per reception for receivers. So the backs are where the real power is, and when TO and CJ started going in the low $50s and other receivers were going in the $40s, they just seemed over-priced based on my experience over the years, in which receivers have been feast or famine. One week I'd get 6 receptions, 120 yards, 2 touchdowns, the next would be 2 catches for 35 yards and nothing. The backs score much more consistently and so I focused my spending there.

Now, in hindsight, I probably should have re-valued my receivers on the fly to match what they were going for, and with the money I had left over I could have probably stolen one of the better ones. A lot of us were slaves to our cheat sheets and didn't adjust to the reality of the draft.

I drafted 7th in a 12 team league, serpentine draft. Passing touchdowns are 4pts in our league. Here's my team in the order I picked them (the overall pick # is in parentheses):

1. (7) Laurence Maroney RB
2. (18) Cedric Benson RB
3. (31) Marques Colston WR
4. (42) Javon Walker WR
5. (55) Vince Young QB
6. (66) LaMont Jordan RB
7. (79) Jason Witten TE
8. (90) Warrick Dunn RB
9. (103) Mark Clayton WR
10. (114) Pittsburgh DEF
11. (127) Jacksonville DEF
12. (138) Ron Dayne RB
13. (151) Matt Schaub QB
14. (162) Matt Stover K

After realizing that I had too many players with a bye in Week 8, though, I dropped Stover and picked up Stephen Gostkowski.

I don't love my roster, but for a 7th pick team, I'm pretty satisfied with their potential.

Loved my money league draft. Picked 2nd/12 4pts passing td/6 rush/rec 1 point ever 20 rush/rec.

1-RB S. Jackson
2-WR R. Wayne
3-WR R. Williams
4-BEARS D
5-RB Adrian Peterson
6-RB Ahman Green
7-QB P. Rivers
8-TE O. Daniels
9-RB C. Taylor
10-WR DJ Hackett
11-WR A. Toomer
12-QB D Garrard
13-RB B Leonard
14-K Mare
15-WR W. Welker

weak at 3rd WR but I love Rivers to get 25 or more td's.
I had a 10 man serpentine draft today, and I had the 2nd pick. We include D players, which I never cared for. Anyways, it turned out really, really well.

QB Bulger, Hasselbeck
WR Harrison, TO, V. Jackson, Holmes
RB S. Jackson, Portis, Adrian "AD" Peterson, Lynch
TE Winslow
K Hanson
DEF Ravens
D Adrian Wilson
D DeMarcus Ware
DB Kerry Rhodes
DL Adalius Thomas

As the guy on NFLN, that picked T.J. Houshmandzadeh, would say, "championship!".
I have 6 teams, but only 2 are for money, so those are the ones I really care about.

#1
- 16 team league
- Four 4-team divisions with 6 teams making the playoffs (and our division has one guy that is clearly tanking for next year)
- You MUST keep two players, but players can only be kept for 2 years then they are back in the draft pool (even if I keep a guy for 2 years and in the middle of the 2nd season I trade him to you, you cannot keep him)
- Lineups are: QB, RB, WR, WR, WR/RB, TE, K, D

Here is that team, with the keepers going into the season in bold--we picked 13th:
QB: Hasselbeck, Culpepper
RB: Ronnie Brown, Maurice Jones-Drew, Chris Henry, Michael Bush, Greg Jones
WR: Roy Williams, Randy Moss, Mushin Muhammad, Sidney Rice
TE: LJ Smith, Marcedes Lewis
K: Neil Rackers
D: San Francisco

#2
- 12 team league
- You keep 1 player from last year and then you can keep either your 8th or 9th round pick from last year for free (counts as your last round pick this year)
- Lineup: QB, RB, WR, WR, WR, K, D (you can play a TE as the 3rd WR and they have easier milestones to reach in order to get points)

Keepers in BOLD, I drafted 11th:
QB: Jay Cutler, Brett Favre
RB: Frank Gore, Marshawn Lynch, Adrian Peterson (MIN), Jerious Norwood (last year's 8th round pick), Chris Henry (this year's 8th round pick), Kevin Jones (this year's 9th round pick), Tony Hunt
WR: Reggie Wayne, Javon Walker, Ronald Curry, Mushin Muhammad, Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis, Robert Meachem
TE: Jeremy Shockey, Dallas Clark
K: Stephen Gostkowski
D: Carolina

3 notes on this team:
1) I am gonna go with a 2 WR-1 TE group of Walker, Wayne and Shockey. Giddy up, bitch!
2) With the 2nd pick in Round 2, I was torn between Peterson and Lynch. I took Peterson and Lynch fell to me 20 picks later. I had to take him, eventhough I didn't have the strong need.
3) I traded off Peyton Manning and Reggie Bush before the draft and had to let Brian Westbrook go for free since I decided I was gonna keep Gore.
This is my first year, so I'm not sure what to do here:

I've got ROMO and Rivers as my QBs which I was planning to flip flop throughout the season depending on who they play from week to week. A guy in my league has put McNabb on the trading block who is ranked higher than my other two, but I was worried about his injury from last season. Should I take him, and if so, which QB should I let go of.
Who would you trade for McNabb? I assume that he's not just going to take a 1-for-1 trade for one of your statistically inferior QBs.
Thread Starter
Also, "playing the matchups" is a sure way to leave a good player on the bench. Pick your stud and ride him for all he's worth.
McNabb has been hurt 3 out of last 5 years. I'd take Rivers or Romo over him. If anything you have trading power, depending on size of league, with your QB tandum. DO NOT trade for McNabb. Risk is too high.
But when he's not hurt, he'll put up better consistent numbers than either Rivers or Romo.
In regards to the trade, I'm not sure if he'd ask for much in return. McNabb is his back up and he's lacking in receivers and decent back-ups, of which I have plenty.

I've got 15 minutes to decide whether to start Thomas Jones or Marshawn Lynch....

Same here. I was thinking Pennington would give it to him when he missed Coles the first time, but I guess he decided to go back to Coles a second time.
I saw that too late. I had Jones for most of last year and he was frustrating. Doubly so because I am a Bear fan.

Come on SJ, I need a TD.

Well, I had Lynch in because of Jones' injury status, but then he was cleared to go and I figured with the two guys New England was missing on defense, he'd be a better bet than Lynch. Typical of the great decision making I usually display.
I debated Welker/DJ Hackett has 2rd WR. Went with DJ though i regretted it as i did it but drafted him first as if that matters.
Trying to figure out if Muhammad is starting or if I should throw Hester into the fire.
I had Jones in as well (and Plaxico on the bench). I'm hoping he'll shape up as these first few weeks are played out. I got ocho cinco and Fitzgerald playing tonight. Overall a pretty good start for me, thanks to Romo.
Keep forgetting there's a separate thread for this--I'm starting the season off in my Dynasty league by playing one of the best teams in the league...I'm down 6 points with Derrick Mason to go tonight. My 2 DEs did jack and shit, which fucking killed me. My DE on the bench had 18 FP. I had to either drop or move to IR 3 players two days before the season started, so I'll be doing some major FA work after tonight's game.
I need some help choosing a RB for tonight. Rudi would be a no brainer against just about anyone else... but the Ravens defense? Should I start Edge instead?
I benched RJ vs. the Ravens last year and he had like 20+ FP while my starter had like 4. Just sayin'. However, the Cards have a new coach and his offense usually starts with the run, and San Fran is a bit soft on the interior DL. ESPN's projections page has them about even at 15 and 17 FP, respectively.

It's really hard to tell the first week. Look at Larry Johnson and Maurice Jones-Drew (my 2 starting RBs in the CHUD league)...thank goodness for my WRs.
During the last year's second meeting of these two teams, James rushed for about 105 yards, if that helps. I'm afraid of Baltimore's D.
Yeah, I'm gonna go with James just because of the Ravens D, even though Rudi has had a couple decent games against them. Burress pretty much single handedly put me back in my matchup this week, so I hate to play it safe, but whatever... thanks for the advice.
EDGE sucks ass. Rudi has had good games against the Ravens in the past.

I'm up 32-15. I've got Lienart later, he's got Palmer and Mason for the rest of this game and the Niners defense. With our scoring, Palmer could go for 300+ and two more scores and only get 10 points, so I'm more worried about Mason getting a score and more receptions.
Fuck Deion Branch. Fuck him in the goat ass. And throw in a special fuck you to Hasselback for not throwing the ball his way.

That TD Gore just scored has beaten me. I HATE losing week 1.
My wife was worried about losing Week 1 after the Sunday afternoon games.

Her team was down by 35 points, AND still had to face tonight's Baltimore D, and all she had left was her two WRs.

Terrell Owens and Plaxico Burress.

Yup, she's 1-0.

Well, you chose wisely. Rudi was doing decent until that fumble. Edge looks like he may be back on his game again.

Thank god the Niners defense didn't have a great game, because my opponent's duo of Palmer and Mason damn near stole the game from me. Leinart didn't help matters much either.
Not too bad for my first week. I had a bye week in my league, but it kept track of my total points anyway and I was second overall. Probably would have been first if Todd Heap's TD wasn't called off on a terrible interference call. And Larry Fitzgereld, 2 points. That's it, huh? 2 points?
I had Fitzgerald last year on a Yahoo team, and honestly he was a disappointment. He was hurt for 2-3 weeks at some point, and if someone would have offered me something for him, I think I would have traded him. I originally had him in my Dynasty league and traded him to move up to the first round. Here's the WRs I used to have on my Dynasty team at one point that I traded away for draft picks (because the team I inherited had an owner that willingly traded picks for shit):

Joey Galloway
Reggie Wayne
Larry Fitzgerald

I've been struggling with getting good WRs ever since. I have Coles (trade), Wes Welker (who I got off FA last year), Derrick Mason (trade), Marty Booker (trade), Brad Smith (drafted), and Peerless Price (FA). If only I had kept just one of those other guys...
Why did you ever trade Wayne? He's been consistent for the past 3-4 years.

Shame.

Yeah, he went for big bucks in our auction draft.

Dude, I'm tellin' ya...no draft picks. The guy had traded away my current year's (the year I started in the league) 1st & 3rd round picks, plus the 1st and 2nd of the following year. All to move up and pick Julius Jones. I'm the one that drafted Marion Barber (thank goodness) the next year. The only other things I had to offer in trade at the time were my QBs (Brady and Roethlisberger) and Ben had just started playing in the NFL, so I didn't want to trade either of them away...although I did try to move Ben before this year's draft, but no one wanted to talk. Hopefully if both he and Brady have stellar years, I may trade one of them for a high pick and another good WR or RB.

Believe me, I still beat myself up over not having any one of them anymore.

I know he's faced two of the better defenses in the league, but Tomlinson has got me a little worried.
2nd week in a row that I've played the highest scoring team for the week. Ugh. I've got a decent team, but I can't catch a break. I'm one of 3 0-2 teams, and I'm outscoring some of the teams at 1-1 and 2-0. Ugh.

Not half as worried as I am for Steven Jackson. Who has NOT faced off against two of the better defenses in the league, and is doing nothing.

But man, how good is Minn's def? Two weeks in a row they've carried me to victory..and the feast continues next week against KC. I smell another INT for TD baby.

I'm 1-1 but I'm the lowest scorer in the league. I didn't figure LT would repeat last year's numbers but I thought I'd be getting more out of him than this.
I'm one of only two 2-0 teams in our league, but I only have the fifth highest point total. Lucky draws, I guess. If I'm going to really be successful, the running back situation in New England needs to improve.
Pretty good debut in my league having the highest point total for the week. Lowest point total for a starter was Plaxico with just 9 points. I actually picked up Lamont Jordan the night before off the waiver wire and started him. I have a dilema at QB this week. I want to keep Romo starting eventhough he's playing Chicago. My back up is Rivers who's projected to score more points, but I don't think I'm sold on him.
