I love the guy that just screams out "YEAHHHHH" after Miller stops talking. Gets me every time.

Peter Sykora calling his shot is total Badass.

What a game. Definitely some horseshit calls (oh, I'm sorry, I guess I'll just stop on a god damn dime when I'm skating and not hit the goalie, seriously, they really need to look into what constitutes interference and what's just inertia bringing you forward). Sad to see the Wings lose, but hey, if you gotta go down, go down in 3rd OT. The only other thing I can complain about is that I have shit to do tonight, but I won't be able to get any of it done because I'll be watching Detroit seal the deal in front of thousands of Pittsburghians (well, I can hope at least).

I went home at 10 am this morning to get the HD installed on my new tv and I caught last night's highlights on ESPNHD.

HOLY SHIT I cant wait to watch game 6. HD is awesome.

Not on NBC it ain't. Or Versus. Then again, ESPN got the footage from NBC, so if you're impressed by that, you'll be in for a treat.

Those other penalties were disappointing, so I'm glad the Pens scored on the legit powerplay. Tough break for the Wings.
I am glad they did not win one of those calls either. Having said that, is everyone saying it is OK to crash the crease and take out the goalie ? In both penalties Fleury was knocked out of position with a live puck. He was knocked out of the area to be able to make a save. They called the penalties mainly because the play was going on, and Detroit could have used the situation to their advantage. It sucks but you can not have guys crashing in there and preventing the goalie from stopping any rebounds.

Agreed, everyone seems pretty upset about those calls, including the announcers who complained for five minutes after the call and then again at intermission, but really it only makes sense. If they dont call that penalty then the game becomes unplayable. I think if a goalie leaves the paint he should be fair game(like Turco and Mike Smith, who move around more than they probably should) but when in they are in front of the net they deserve to be protected.

As for the lament of the announcer saying, "what do they expect him to do when hes going that fast" thats just a weak defense. He doesnt need to come to a stop, just veer to the right slightly. You dont get handed a goal on a silver platter just because you really want to score.

On another topic, I just read my lightning have officially fired Torterella. What are the chances Barry Melrose really becomes their new coach? Apparently hes friends with the people buying the team.

I think the Red Wings bounce back in game six and take it. They should have ended it about 10 times in the first OT.

NBC has been broadcasting the playoffs in HD since April 12th. and Versus has their own HD channel. so yeah, its in High-Def.

I was commenting on NBC's HD being awesome, not that it was HD.

I think it's all but a done deal that the Mullet will be coaching Tampa Bay. They are just waiting for the Finals to be over and Barry has wrapped up his duties at ESPN before they announce anything.

oh. in that case.. I can't wait for tonight.

So looking forward to tonights game. The Penguins might be able to ride the overtime win, at home no less, to a game 6 win. If Malkin comes alive, hell, stops being a turn over machine, then the penguins really have a shot.

So what does everyone think about Barry Melrose being up for coaching the Tampa Bay Lightning...

or Tiger Wood's comment that "no one watches hockey anymore"...

a few headlines in the past day that's getting a lot of internet time right now.

in hurricanes news... we signed Patrick Eaves to a 3-year deal. Go Canes!

From NHL.com:

"I don't really care. Let's talk about the Dodgers," the California native said. "I don't think anybody really watches hockey anymore."
And also...

But the improved television ratings for this year's finals doesn't seem to match Woods' assessment.
Well, yeah. Considering they don't count Nielsen in Canada and they don't even have ice in California, I can't imagine how this year's cup is getting improved ratings over last year...hmm...interesting.
I lost a little respect for Tiger, thanks to those comments. Its one thing to point out that he does not personally care about hockey, but to make the point that no one does, well there goes some respect.

I am surprised it took Melrose this long to get back to coaching. Not sure if it was due to lack of job offerings or just bad offerings. Tampa is not a bad place to go to, they have some talent already.

But the most important thing right now is tonights game. If this series goes to seven games, that will help hockey out as a whole.
Boo. Fuck Tiger and his Baba Booey teeth. He's probably right though.
I think by nature, hockey teams generally give up when suffering a two-goal deficit in the third. Oh well.
Soooooo close.

ETA: Watching a team celebrating with the cup on the road is always awkward looking.

Yea, it was odd to hear so many boos as the cup was raised for the first time and Chelios especially seemed to recognize the ridiculousness of the situation when he had his turn with it. Seemed a little low class on the part of the crowd but I guess its understandable given the energy at the end of the game when it looked like they might have a chance for another overtime run.
Yeah it was lacking some class, but (there is always one) I am not sure how the away crowd should react. Pittsburgh sports fan are not exactly the fair weather, cheer for what ever type. One of the loudest crowds in the NHL, they are always full of emotion over there team. As a Penguins fan, at least I know they were outplayed by the Red Wings. If you are going to lose, I rather it be to a team that deserves to win (I still hate that they lost to the freaking Panthers a bunch of years back).

Huzzah! Glad to see Detroit getting some love for once in its miserable, post-1960s existence.
Yeah I was about to say. They also are one of the most popular NHL teams. Big media darling and all that.
Well, that's that. Nice season Detroit.

And could someone reminds Tiger Wood that he's not practicing a sport? Or could he debate his retarded attitude with Bob Probert or something?

The third period was quite boring until the last 2 minutes of play. The Pens couldn't get the puck past the blue line to save their lives.
As for Tiger....

Golf is what Hockey Players do when they are on vacation from being Professional Athletes.

As for the Cup Final....

BOOO....BOOO....BOOO

Oh, I was referring to the general wasteland that is the city of Detroit. Rodents of Unusual Size, lack of grocery stores. Hell, find any thread started by Overlord and there's some more depressing news about Detroit.

Glen Wesley announced his retirement from the Hurricanes today. He will now be a director of defensemen for the Canes! The dude played a LONG time in the league.

When I read that I was completely shocked that he was still playing. I thought maybe he retired from the front office or something.

Congrats to the Detroit Red Wings for a victorious season, even though I am a true blue Rangers fan.
