Why is it with atll the bitching and moaning about remakes, original horror movies only seem to get limited release? I've been hearing about Hatchet for months now and when it finally opens it's only in a few theaters. The same with Joshua, that one caught my attention from the trailer that I saw before a few other movies and it seems to have disappeared.

Is it because the general public seems to not want to give original horror movies a try and only see the remakes? Remakes are really hit and miss. There have been a few that I loved, a few I hated and then some that were ok but I wouldn't want to see them again.

A film being distributed in "Limited Release" tends to be based on the production company not wanting to make a huge investment on a possible flop. If the word of mouth is good, then it may jump to a full release, and if bad, they didn't take that big a marketing hit.


It has zero to do with horror film remakes.

Yeah, it doesn't have anything to do with original vs. remake, but I am pissed that Hatchet isn't opening near me this weekend. And when these smaller movies do open they tend to play at one theater that's all the way across town, thus ensuring I never get around to seeing them on the big screen.

I do think he's right about the reason remakes tend to get the wide distribution, though. They are a, theoretically, tried & tested product that the "general public" as opposed to mainly hardcore genre fans, will go see (i.e, spend money on), so they're less of a risk for the studios, in most cases.

That's my problem too. I was ready to see it and it's not even playing anywhere in the South...Well there's a couple of Texas venues but I have no desire to drive 12 hours for a movie. ;-)
