Jam Sessions (DS)

Apparently this will be released in a few days! I thought it wasn't out until October or November. The Best Buy version is shipping with a code to unlock three extra songs. My question is- is it a special version of the cart itself or just a code that will be posted on the internet by the end of the day?

I think all those store exclusive levels/bonuses are codes in every copy of the game. I really don't think it's likely for them to print special ones.

Also, have you seen the bundle that comes with a freakin' MINI AMP?

Out today!

Someday, I'll put as much time into learning how to play my real guitar as I do video game guitars.

Someone please buy this and report back quickly.

I'm picking it up this evening so I'll pop in tonight sometime with impressions.

I haven't turned my DS on since I finished Hotel Dusk. I hope there's still some charge left on the battery.

Hmm. I expected this to be Guitar Simulator DS but I didn't expect it to be quite like this. When they announced that there will be songs licensed for the game, I thought it was for a more game-y mode. That's not the case. Rather, the screen tells you what chords to play when and shows the lyrics to the song- there are no in-game vocals or backing instrumentation.

As that's the case, I imagine I'll play the song sections about never. The free play stuff seems okay. I haven't played around with the effects and other sound distortion options but you can record up to five tracks on the cart itself so that's nice.

My initial impression is a bit of disappointment but that's because I expected more game-related modes. As it is, it's Electroplankton: Guitar Edition.

It'd probably be greatly improved if there were an option to make the chords toggle for each press of the d-pad instead of making you hold them down. As it is, it kills the sound as soon as you release the d-pad, which makes maintaining a rhythm kind of a bitch when you're playing the pre-programmed songs and it jumps from a chord mapped to d-pad left to one mapped to d-pad right, or a diagonal. Maybe it's not so bad on a DS Lite, but on a standard it's a massive pain.

It's also got a pretty terrible selection of songs that they programmed in. I realize they were limited by the fact that they could only use songs that you can play a reasonable approximation of with just chords (more on that coming), but seriously, Avril Lavigne?

On the subject of only chords: Is there any really good reason they couldn't have instituted a string specific plucking mode? Add five more lines on the touchscreen, and have a little tag on each that changes to reflect what note each string will play with the selected chord, and you're done. Almost fully functional pocket sized guitar thingy.

As it is, if you've got an exceptionally quick thumb, you can pull of a passable impression of a self taught acoustic wanker, with none of the built in sex appeal of actually having a guitar in your hand.

This is coming in the new Hannah Montana game. Seriously.

Huh. Well, okay. No real game mode. I wasn't really expecting it to be like EBA or something, but this does make me question how much I'd play with it.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I'm really warming up to this but, man, moving around the d-pad kills my thumb after 15-20 minutes of playing. I think it's because of the ridge on the ds phat d-pad. Is the d-pad on the lite smooth like the Wii remote?

Yeah, the DS Lite d-pad is like the Wiimote's, smooth as an androids bottom.
