LA Food Is Killing Me

Why the hell did I go to the land of fucking tofu and sushi? LA chewers, do you know of any decent places where I can get my hands on any of these foods (decentness and cheapness to be balanced):

-Irish beef stew
-New England clam chowder
-Steamers
-New York pizza
-Lobster chowder
-Shepard's pie
-Chicken pot pie
-Fish & chips
-Pork chops & sauerkraut
-Traditional Italian food that won't make me want to shoot myself
-and, for the love of god, mashed potatoes and gravy what don't come from a can

Damn you 500 Foods thread, damn you to hell.

I know it is a bit out of LA, but Ventura has some fantastic seafood joints. Also, way up in Pismo Beach is a place called the Splash Cafe that has some of the best New England Clam Chowder that I've had on the West Coast.

Not to sound like a complete old fart, but things listed above (I took out some of the more cost prohibitive, or difficult to replicate) could probably all be made better and cheaper at home, as long as you don't mind eating leftovers of each the next day.

www.yelp.com

It goes by consumer reviews and seems to be pretty good for here in NYC at least.

If those are the things you're looking to eat, I'd say the name of the thread should be LA Food Is Preventing Me From Having A Massive Coronary.

Thanks for the links and advice. Went out and hit Finn McCool's in Santa Monica and got some pretty decent grub. As for the massive coronary, I think any nutritionist who saw I deviated from my "prisoner of the Château d'If" eating patterns would commend me.

Dude, you're not digging the sushi?

I'm so so sorry.

No offense man, but take a look at the list on the top of the thread. Sir Reginald Sophistication Esquire, of the Herefordshire Sophistications, I ain't.

Well, unfortunately I'm not crazy about Italian food so I don't eat it often.

But the one place in LA that I do like, and I really cant tell how authentic it is but you should still give it a try, is Miceli's.

There's one on Hollywood Blvd and another in Burbank. I recommend the one in Burbank instead. It's right off the 5.

The best place for you to go to in Los Angeles is One World Way - more commonly known as LAX. You'll have to order at the counter, but if you ask for their "One way ticket to NY so I can get some really great food", they'll be happy to serve you. The appetizer is generally airline peanuts, and it takes about eight hours for your food to arrive, but once you get back to this side of the coast? Gooood eatin'.

Versailles is Cuban, but they have a damn good pork chop plate:

Sorry outside of that, every time I go to L.A. i feast on Asian food since my wife isn't into it and I am with other friends who grew up on home cooked Filipino food.

I've done a fair amount of testing on these and although nobody in LA does truly authentic pub grub, the best places for "british style" stuff would be:

Ye Old King's Head on 2nd and Santa Monica

O Brien's on Main in Santa Monica

The Whale & Ale in San Pedro (they have off days but on a good day, probably the best Fish & Chips in Southern Cali)

if you're ever near Pasadena, Brits on Colorado Blvd (good sausage rolls)

also if you're driving around and you see an H Salt, you could always give their Fish & Chips a try (though quality varies since it is a franchise)

.....I don't know what that is.

Cilantro is awesome is what it is.

There's an Italian place on Sunset, across from the Laugh Factory. $2 valet parking and a decent menu and wine list.

But you're going to be miserable if you don't branch out a bit.

I just had terrific gnocchi at a local trattoria in Los Feliz.

Anywhere with good ´scotch´or ´pickled´eggs?

I haven't found any good BBQ here either, but the closest thing I've found to true Southern BBQ is Western Smokehouse in Culver City, off of Overland. It's definitely Texas BBQ - so don't expect Carolina sauce or Arkansas sauce.

Anyone have any suggestions? Before anyone offers any: Baby Blues sucks ass. What the fuck are they thinking - serving a Pulled pork sandwich with Foccacia bread? Dicks.

After eating heavy Chicago cuisine for over 10 years, I'd be ready for some LA shit. Besides, the Asian food (specifically the Korean BBQ) is supposed to be fucking awesome.

What about a good dim sum place? Or at least a good Chinese bakery? I've been craving 'jean dway' for about 3 years now.

Ooh ooh! I know an awesome dumpling place.

Pasadena is full of the most awesome dumpling houses - try Din Tai Fung - technically its in Arcadia, but it might as well be Pasadena. It's worth the drive if you are in LA - also - the wait will be long. It's jam packed every night.

There's another place called Dumplings 10053 that's also supposed to be really good.

I can't recommend a Chinese bakery, but I'm sure there's one in Pasadena.

There's a really good bakery in Glendale on the way at least, on Brand ave, called Porto's. It constantly gets ridiculously good reviews, and it's Jam packed.

Thanks! I'm actually out in the Inland Empire, but that's on my way to my favorite rugby watching venue in Van Nuys.

Don't know much about any of these, but there's a popular Fish-n-Chips place in Santa Monica--King's Head Tavern or something? I know you can get Shepard's Pie at...oh, what's the name? 3rd Street Deli maybe? on the Santa Monica Promenade. I doubt it's very authentic. There's a place in Hollywood on Sunset called The Cat & Fiddle that serves a lot of this type of stuff.

There's a place in the San Gabriel Valley called Moffet's that serves nothing but pot pies.

Try the Red Lion Tavern in Silverlake.

Chicagoans in LA all eventually find Joe Mantegna's pizza place. Taste Chicago (in Burbank, I think).

Yep. Right near the WB lot.

I just dream of the day they open a Giordano's or a Lou Malnati's out here.

It will probably never happen, but I can dream.
