World in Conflict

Has anyone else played the demo for this? I just got done with it.

West Germany, 1988. To avoid certain collapse, the Soviet army boldly advances into Europe. NATO responds only to be met on a second front -- a diversionary attack on the American homeland. You are a field commander, leading the era's most powerful military machines in the campaign to retake America's cities and suburbs.
I'm really impressed. Getting used to the camera controls takes a few minutes, especially on a lagging system, but it ran pretty smooth once I dropped down the quality a bit.

I really like the premise, with the Soviets entering Europe and then getting into America. The demo takes place in the Northwest area, by the way.

Here is a link to the site where the demo downloaded quickly:

I'm going to wait for it to come on the 360 sometime next year. Looks like there's going to be a glut of RTS type games so hopefully this one can offer something new.

Being able to control tactical strikes and reinforcements is a hoot.
What are your specs? Pretty much the only games I use my PC for these days is RTS games as I'm too scared to try them on a console.
After two years of making due with a rather antiquated system, this may be the game that finally forces my hand and compels me to upgrade. What's funny about this fact is that I'm really not that much of a PC gamer. I have games that I love, but I don't follow the gaming scene in the same way that I do the worlds of movies and music.

But this game (and more specifically, its terrific premise) are making me re-think my former position. An interactive Red Dawn? Yeah, that's just damn cool, no matter how you slice it.
Not a C&C fan I guess?
Ehh, I had a lot of fun with Red Alert back in the day (perhaps better known as middle school), but to be honest, I never really checked out the other entries in the series. I think one of the things that contributed to my indifference was the futuristic tint of it all. I don't deny that it sometimes made things intriguing in its own way (those Tesla tanks in Red Alert were the shit), but overall, it just left me cold. I would have preferred more contemporary units, preferably in a more detailed setting.

I don't know, it's more than possible that I could be putting too much stock in what I've seen from World in Conflict so far. What I do know is that the idea of leading tanks down main street in Topeka, KS strikes me as pretty damn cool. Obviously gaming (and all media really) is littered with the carcasses of great ideas that were undone by shoddy implementation. I'm just seriously hoping that World in Conflict doesn't fall under the same banner.

Will check this out, if I can run this.

This thing looks great even on low texture. No lagging when I set it to that texture level, which made me love it even more.
Heck, I have the minimum spec. I'll give this a shot.

also have to get Bioshock, which will barely run. And Company of heroes. And continue my campaign of Rome: Total War.

Damn you Thompson for reminding me of this game. Damn you...

You can download the demo at the link I posted above. The 1+GB download took like 20 minutes. Ridiculous.

I couldn't run the BioShock demo on my brand new system. Not the end of the world, I can play it on my friend's 360 if I ever get a hankering.

This game needs to be on the shelves this week. I can't wait.

Bump.

Comes out tomorrow. I'll be picking it up sometime after work.

Amazing demo.

Fuck, I hate your guts Thompson. I have to buy this game. And you were right, it really runs well on a lower-end PC.

Red Dawn: The Game. So good.

Got my copy today (the regular version; I don't need a piece of the "Berlin Wall") and installed it at lunch.

This game is going to get so much of my time. I'm already restricting it to late evenings, when I am usually sitting in front of the TV relaxing. Otherwise I'll never get anything done around the house.

I love the opening cutscene with the Russians and the US fighting in front of a 1980's Burger King. How awesome would it be to see that somewhere in the game?

And just like the demo, I'm running this on "Low" texturing but it still looks wonderful and is smooth on my laptop.

Oh... and two words. Tactical nukes.
It's actually a great RTS. I'm surprised it's THAT good. Screw the economy, it's all about tactics.

And Alec Baldwin narrating the whole thing is always a plus.

I just used my first tactical nuke.

Yes... a TACTICAL NUKE.

I think I just peed a little.
The whole tactical nuke concept is absurd (how can a doomsday weapon be tactical?), but it's amazing to see it. I caved in and bought the game. My wife hates you now.

The tactical nuke is a last minute thing. You're essentially fucking yourself if you need to move into the area you just wiped out, but damn... it's pretty to zoom out and watch.

Apologies to the wife, but I don't regret what I have done.
Hey, it's one of the best RTS I've played. It's redefining the genre. Hopefully others will jump in.
My PC is only slightly younger than Martin Landau so I can't make the min specs. I know it is sacriledge to ask for a real RTS but any plans to move this to the 360? I've heard nothing but great news on this game.

Yeah. It's being ported to the 360. But I don't know how anyone could stand playing an RTS on a console. But this is coming from a guy that just got used to playing FPS on a console.

They clearly made the level in the demo much harder when it comes to playing it in the game. If you don't keep up with the Russians, especially once the ones coming from the road by the destoyed gas station, it's game over. You won't be able to defend the center of town if you don't bomb the shit out of that access road.

This sounds a lot like the board game I used to play:

Well... outside of the South Americas and Chinese... pretty much.

Had to upgrade my video drivers because of the in-game cutscenes, but this is epic.
Just fell in love with this demo today and I had never even heard of it prior. Now I'm in the unfortunate position where the money I had set aside for TF2 might be getting spent a little earlier than planned. Curses/joy.

Also this game runs smooth as hell even on higher settings, I'm impressed with the sense of scale.

The cutscenes play out fine in low texture mode for me. I don't need to see the textures on the models to get the point. I'm sure it looks awesome in the higher modes, though.
I'm running it with graphics detail set to "low" in 1280x720, and it doesn't look very good to me.

Nice little demo, though.

It's nothing mind blowing when setting it on low, but the gameplay makes up for it. I'm running this on my laptop, so I can't push it any higher than that. I have it in 1440x900 which helps a little bit, I'm sure.
Man this game is intense.I love it, every mission feels like your just hanging on by your finger nails.I just did the one where you get control of a battle ships guns.It was so damn cool.I must admit I pirated this, but after having played it I'm going to slap down the cash.
I've finally been able to fix my laptop's overheating issues, so I can finally play this shit. Thank Christ, because I was getting mighty pissed off that I was missing out.
Hoooly shit, this is awesome. Fuckin A.
I finally got to the first use of a tactical nuke.

Holy shit.

And I love all the little details reminding you of 1989, from the music (Tears for fears) to other cultural references, such as the portable Cd player.

Don't forget about the Troll pinned to the soldiers uniform.
Another great thing: the way it uses some characters in the games as a personal reference point for the player. Normally, RTS are pretty impersonal about the story mode.

Bannon has a really good storyline throughout this. He is immediately redeemed and then we get to see him screw up some more.

Also, I love how it jumps back in time to let you play missions over in Russia and Europe. So cool.
Hot fucking damn, this game is INTENSE. I get such an adrenaline rush from this that after an hour or two of playing I have to take a break and relax for a bit.
Fuck you guys! I already had Crysis, Hellgate:London and the Orange Box lined up and now you're gonna make me buy this, too? I'm not made of money you know.
This game is definitely in the running for Game of the Year, so it'll be worth it. The rush you get is incredible.

Time flies by too when you're playing this. I'm amazed to see how much time has gone by after each scenario is done.

for those of you with ATI cards, ATI has published a hotfix for the latest Catalyst that improves performance on WoC, among other games.

Im liking this game but its idea of autosave left me with a nasty surprise after narrowly loosing the mission at the very end of the level only to find I had to start the whole map from the beginning. With each level being so long, I think I assumed it would have autosaved with each objective or something. On the plus side, I destroyed the enemy on the second run through so I guess the first one was good practice.
I picked this up today, and maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like I have two copies of the game in the package. And it's not the 10 day trial copy, it's two identical white envelopes with two identical DVD-ROMs inside, and the label has the same part number, only the key codes are different. I thought maybe it was a two-disc install, but they're not numbered and one disc loaded the full game. Did I just benefit from some sloppy quality control at Sierra?

Sounds like it.

Time to keep one disc and stuff everything else back in the box and take it back.
Or I could be benevolent and send the extra copy to an interested party....

Come on people. This is a mighty game. Claim this!

And isn't the return policy void once you open the box?

Good idea. Spread the wealth!

Did you get a copy of the 10-day trial disc and History Channel doc as well?
Nope, just an extra game disc.

Yeah, someone fucked up. There is supposed to be a lot more in the box.
