Supernatural Season 2

Thread Starter
Season 2 of Supernatural is out on dvd today. It really is a pretty terrific show that's had its fair share of coverage on the site. The lead characters are great, the show typically has a glorious soundtrack, and the monsters and stories are usually very well done. I'll probably get around to picking it up sometime this week and I just figured I'd start a thread to give anyone interested a heads up.

I got into the show last summer after a co-worker told me about it. I had known about the show but I had never really given it any attention, for reasons I won't ramble on about, but once I saw it I was hooked. The first episode I saw was about vampires, with a twist. The vampires were just trying to survive by not killing people and the two leads eventually end up protecting the small vampire clan from another hunter. That other hunter would go on to have a pretty big role in things to come...

Anyway, I was hooked, and eventually devoured season 1 on DVD and DVR'd my way through the rest of season 2. So now, here comes season 2 on DVD, and season 3 starts up in a few weeks.

I was pretty disappointed with the way they wrapped up the demon/special children storyline, but I suspect that had a lot to do with not knowing if a third season was in the cards.

That said, season two is a solid, enjoyable chunk of entertainment. I'll be buying it later on today.

I'm still confused as to how anyone who isn't a teen girl finds this show interesting. Just go watch old X-Files DVDs instead. It's like the same thing, but good!

Blasphemer!! Honestly I know not everything is for everybody but this show is about as good as it gets for the genre. X-Files was at times just weird for weird's sake. This show has mythology and fresh takes on old stories. Oh and it has the best music out of any show on t.v. right now, both quality and fitting the story.

Don't take this as an attack, I probably think your favorite show is gay too.

I'm a little confused as to how anyone who cops to thinking that High School Musical is "kind of a slice of greatness" would think that dismissing this show as being for teen girls is anything but meaningless hair splitting.

To echo BMetal, no attacks intended, just good-natured, bemused bewilderment.

I tired watching Season 1 and just didn't get into it. I found the two leads to be kind of wooden and uncharismatic. Maybe things smooth out after a few episodes. I don't know but I just didn't get into it.

Blockbuster sent out discs 5 & 6 today. I hate watching shows out of order.

I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread yet... Just got my copy from Best Buy, and dropped off a resume at their offices in Burnaby... Wish me luck.

The only thing I didn't like about this season was the werewolf episode. I didn't like how they went about it. I wanted to see a werewolf, not a chikc with fnags and sharp nails. That episode disappointed me alot.

Same here. I was amped to see their interpretation of werewolves, and was disappointed they just bought some shit at a Halloween store. The alien abduction/slow dance was spot on though.

Can you really do a good werewolf on a TV budget though? I suppose Buffy kind of pulled it off with the original Oz and Nina. Though they weren't that great still.

Truthfully, Supernatural doesn't have many monstrous monsters. It's mostly ghosts of humans, guys in makeup, or costuming like the hook guy and scarecrow. Or vampires and CGIed eyes for the YED. From the first season the most ornate bad guy that I can think of is that thing they shot with tasers or the wendigo that you couldn't even really see.

I like the show, but I don't imagine them being that good with making up good looking demons and stuff.

I hope they never find the budget to make elaborate creatures. It would ruin a certain mystique to me.

I was thinking something on the lines of how they covered the vamps, actually. It was simple but different, and I had expected the same for the werewolves. And I think the makeup/cg department has been solid so far (like the ripping off the flesh in the first doppleganger episode). I'd say all their creatures so far have followed the simple but effective mold, just the werewolf being simple, not so effective.

Yeah, but werewolves are much more elaborate than vampires' teeth. I don't really see a way to pull off one that looks particularly wolfish while doing it simply. Other than not letting you see it. Or just making him look like the Wolf Man.

Though I do agree they went too simple.

The other effects are good. Like the ghosts and the doppleganger like you said.

Ha! It's true, there is at least 5% of me that is somehow a teenage girl. Maybe when Supernatural does a musical episode with lots of singing and dancing I'll be able to get into it.

I just got the boxset today, the delivery from Amazon to Finland takes awhile. I just finished The Devil's Road Map extra, and I have to say, that was one of the most interesting extra that I've ever seen. Worth checking out!

Point for the girls- the leads are hot.

Point for the guys- car porn, the impala.
Point for the guys- super hot models nearly every episode.
Point for the guys- male bonding, father son relationships, brother brother relationships.
Point for the guys- classic greatest hits of mullet rock fantastic soundtrack.

I'm tired of people thinking this show is for the ladies. It has the ladies hooked yeah, but it's CLEARLY a dudes show.

Note: I would have liked the werewolf to be treated like the wendigo was. They're pretty much the same kind of creature.
True, but given the new additions for next season, it seems like they may be trying to appeal to the females.

In a rather cliched way in my opinion.

Ya know I like this show but I don't love this show. I mean it's got all the right elements and everything but it jsut doesn't have the right kinda character development that Buffy had. I mean certain episodes do pack an emotional punch but others jsut feel hallow.

Sorry, but the guys are just too damn pretty for this to be considered a dudes show. If it starred Ron Perlman and Robert Z'Dar in the leads, then maybe.

Good looking dudes can star in their own show without beind demoted to girl show status. Something like Buffy is a million times more girl show than this.

Given the Route 66 nature of the show, there's not a large cast of characters to develop or utilize for that punch. You pretty much have only the relationship between the two brothers. And let's face it, "no chick flick moments." They're not going to be that in your face about emotional punchs as often as Buffy was.

And frankly, with the way that Buffy ended for me, I hope they don't have that kind of character development.

I had this prejudice against the show also, but the actors grow on you (well, Jensen Ackles atleast). They're too pretty to be considered tough, but I think the show plays on that a bit. Plus, every week they meet new victims they have to help, and would you expect someone (mostly young, nubile girls) to trust Ron Perlman wielding a shotgun talking about the supernatural?
I would. Cause it's freakin' Ron Perlman. I'd trust him more if he was red with a big right hand.

But, you have a point. Though, given some of their fake ID's, they hardly look like the guys they're pretending to be either.
