DVD Complete Series boxed sets advice

Okay, so, "people who own TV shows on DVD are dumb"-argument-some-of-you-have aside, humor me: I was incensed when the West Wing complete series thing came out the same day as the final season did. I've been buying the sets religiously and now as it's over lazy asshole get THAT? FUCKERS! Even goddamn Friends had the option to get the boxed set empty by mail and you put in the discs you owned if you bought the season sets as they came out.

Anyways, you all probably know about that swanky X-Files series boxed set that comes out.

X-Files being one of my favorite series ever, and considering that a dumbass friend lost 2/3 of the discs from the second and third season, would it be dumb or marginally smart to sell all my nine season sets to a DVD store and buy the boxed set?

Same with the Angel series boxed set, too, actually. Love those two series.

I'm a sucker for pretty boxed sets, so, no need to point it out for me.

Seems to me it's what's on the discs that matters, not what they come packaged in.

This is crazy talk, I love pretty packaging.

Yeah, but if already have six seasons of a show and the final season comes out along with the entire series in a pretty box, I'm buying the final season and that's that. I'm not going to sell everything and buy it again just to get a pretty slipcase.

Word.

Are your West Wing double-sided DVD's still playing? I've been considering buying the goddamned full series simply because the first three seasons are having some series issues in multiple DVD players that I've tried.

That being said, I don't think it's a dumb idea if you know a place that would give you decent value. I personally like the way seven seasons of West Wing boxes looks on my DVD shelf, rather than one weird "full series" box.

Yeah, ok thats true.

...unless the box is made of metal or something.

There's a complete-series X-Files set coming? How much does that cost, $6,000,000?
The Seinfeld set is the biggest bullshit ever. It was one of, if not the, most anticipated TV on DVD release. Most fans of the show that didn't think it being on syndicated tv a dozen times a day, bought the tv sets. They even bought gift sets packaged with stupid stuff like a miniature napkin dispenser with ketchup and mustard salt & pepper shakers. Now with the final season coming out Sony releases on the same day the entire series set which comes with this collectible book that they claim a version of was given to the cast at the end of the series AND an additional disc of bonus features. They advertise it as Saving The Best For Last. More like Fuck All Of You Who Already Opened Your Wallets. Sony is really losing the support I've given them.

I think now we can figure out that this is going to happen with every popular series out there. When the Buffy and Alias Complete Series sets were announced, I sold my other seasons on Ebay for a respectable amount. Now I have complete sets with cool packaging that takes up much less space on my DVD shelf.

Don't forget about the HD-DVD/Bluray editions that will come out as well. This trend of saying fuck you to the early fans started back when companies began releasing special editions of CDs with a bonus disc a year after the initial release. Ticked me off then and it ticks me off now.

About that X-Files boxed set -- are these the original season releases with all the extras, or the recent barebones slimcase seasons? And it includes the movie -- does this mean we can look forward to an Ultimate Complete Edition if they ever get a second movie made?

I had a momentary shudder when I saw the slim-case edition of the Monty Python boxed set (especially since it was about half the price I paid for the full-sized set) but hey, I got to enjoy it sooner.

Buffy is the only one of these I own, and that's because while I owned seasons five, six, and seven at one point, I never had them all at one time. The only other series I'd consider doing this for are Angel, West Wing (although I already own season one and two, which is really all you need), and Homicide.

The price I saw was between the neighborhood of 160-180.

I rarely pick up the Complete Collections since I tend to grab the season sets as soon as they're released. I don't have the patience to wait for the big hurrah.

But, I've managed to hold on to pick up the complete collections of Strangers with Candy, Homicide and Alias. The only problem with that was I got to see more than three episodes of Alias.

So, it got regifted.

I really want that Homicide file cabinet set.

Holy shit, that thing is nice. And the $300 price makes it significantly cheaper than buying the seasons separately at $100 each.

It's also going out of print, so make hay while the sun shines...

I don't even glance at the Sopranos DVD season sets 'cuz I know (and, hell, it's already been kinda-announced for Dec. '08) a Complete Series Set is coming.

As for The X-Files: The Ultimate Collection, it includes all nine seasons plus the movie in a boxed set for $329.98, but Amazon.com has it right now for $230.99.

The slimmer box sets are mirror copies of the bigger box sets that came previously.

Not according to this bit of news:

I only buy a season box set when the newest one comes out. Just because all the others are dirt cheap. Tales from the crypt,South Park and the Simpsons being the biggest examples. On average they endup being 20 bucks

Does anybody know if "Roseanne" & "That 70s Show" are gonna get Complete Series releases by chance?

Who would want to buy Roseanne on DVD? Tom Arnold is that you?
Not sure about Roseanne, but expect 70s Show complete set in 2Q 2008 (anywhere from March to May). FOX is usually pretty good about doing the complete sets roughly 5-8 weeks after the release of the last season. They've got 70s Show Season 8 currently pegged for last week of Jan/mid of Feb. Season 7 comes out on October 16th.

I've pretty much decided that I'm gonna get the Angel and The X-Files boxed sets, regardless of having them in separate seasons already. I might part down the road with them and thus, only keep the boxed sets.

I saw a press release for Gilligan's Island - Complete Series at TVShowsOnDVD.com and went "ooooh..." but quickly snapped out of it said "stop it, stop hating yourself".
Time to bite the bullet and give Amazon $185 for Six Feet Under, unless I find a better deal.

A friend of mine loves the show and I want to save him the trouble of buying each season individually when he can just wait for the complete series set to be released.

Thanx Anderson for answering my question.

I got excited when I noticed that it was on DDD for about $98, but when I added it to cart, the site told me it was no longer available. Dangit... I almost purchased this during at least two of the 20% off sales in the past. Wish I would have, now.
