Zero Punctuation Reviews

So there's some sort of website called The Escapist...whatever. But some gentleman with an accent does video "reviews" for games at a mile a minute. They are very funny and very on the nose.

The link up top is to the current archives for the reviews. They're all good, so start at the bottom and work up as my dad once told me.

And I am not affiliated with the site, before it gets asked. At least I don't think I am. As many forms as I've filled out on the Internet, I may be...

I found his Bioshock review a week or so ago when it hit Digg. Very good stuff, but it hit a little to close to home as I'm still in the honeymoon phase of Bioshock love.

His psychonauts review is very solid, as well.

The Escapist is a pretty good site: lots of good in-depth articles on gaming.

Their articles are far too theoretical for my tastes, the site is more about what videogames should be than what videogames are. It's nice that they generally hold games to a higher artistic standard than your usual review site, but sometimes they seem like they're off in dream-land. Yes it would be nice if zombie Shakespeare clawed out of a shallow grave and into the games industry, but until that happens, endlessly whining about the dearth of artistic ambition in videogames won't help much.

This man has found his niche. Funny stuff.
I could listen to this guy all day.

Yeah, I've been a fan since the first one popped online. Just a funny motherfucker. I don't agree with him with most of his Bioshock criticisms but damn if he didn't crack me up with the whole "jump in the air and hack" thing.
Yeah, regardless of whether I agree with him (or that I'm just jealous), the guy puts together a great product.

The video games he himself writes (5 days a stranger, and so on) are also apparantly rather good.

He's rapidly becoming one of my favourite reviewers, anyway.

I'd like to hear his review of The Escapist.
Absolute gold.

I have a friend of mine from Manchester who talks like this sometimes.

Love, love, love this man's work.

His Resident Evil 5/Heavenly Sword bit made me crack up a few too many times and his Psychonaut's review was just fantastic.
He's actually a member of somethingawful.com, and he was going to make his videos regular pieces for the site until someone swooped in and offered him money to go elsewhere.

The latest review is up, this time for Manhunt. It is, of course, pretty fucking funny.
So, I'm catching up on Heroes, as I didn't watch it when it aired. Around Episode 17, Jessica is playing the PS3 with Micah...that exact scene described in the Heavenly Sword Preview.

Cue music.

Halo 3 review up now. Use the link at top.
Orange Box up now, loves Portal kinda indifferent to Episode 2 and I can't gauge what he thinks about TF2. But he hates 'nades too which is a good thing.
For entertainment value, he's fantastic. As a professional, intelligent critic of video games, he sucks.

For example: "I don't care about multiplayer, so I will ignore that facet of Halo 3." That's fine if you just want to entertain an audience with a clever monologue, but if you want to be taken even semi-seriously as a reviewer you can't ignore the arguably most important part of a product. Of course, maybe that's not what he's aiming for; if so, fine.
These started off kind of funny, but I couldn't take more than two minutes of the latest one.
If he wasn't funny as all hell he'd be a posterboy for the worst demographic of gamers. His apparent, sneering contempt for casual and hardcore gamers is only really palatable because he's so quick and clever.

I listened to a few more. He's funny, but a joke as a credible reviewer/journalist.
I think the only actual REVIEW he's done was Heavenly Sword. The rest are essentially stand up routines, with flash animation and geeky knowledge.

Yeah, I always felt it was "review" in as much as he's giving his funny, biased opinion. Jesus, it's not like I went in after the Heavenly Sword review and said, "Gee, what a completely original way to review games. Rip them apart in flash based surrelity while being completely and utterly opinionated about them! Best way to review things ever!" Maybe if they weren't called reviews and just called Zero Punctuation Makes Fun of Games and Sometimes Those Who Play/Make Them, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

But I digress. His Portal musings are dead on and fuck you if you don't agree.
I think the fact that Overlord takes this shit seriously is almost as funny as the videos themselves.
It was a very grim day at work today (case involving a suicidal spree killer). On second thought: Escapist=fun, not to be taken seriously.

Anyway, the Bioshock=System Shock review is spot on. They are pretty damned similar.

I'm glad everyone else likes this because I find it hilarious. I just watched the orange box review.

"The sniper for point and click adventure fans, though the only available command is 'USE gun ON man' "

He certainly goes after tall poppies, but I think that's probably the Australian sense of humor.

ATTACK
RUN
PENGUIN

Not as vitriolic as others, but still highly amusing.
