6 Charged in Week-long Torture, Rape

Quote:
(LOGAN, W.Va.) — A woman who authorities said was sexually abused, beaten and stabbed while held captive for at least a week was repeatedly called a racial slur during the attacks, the victim's mother said.

Six people, all white, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, have been arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of the 23-year-old black woman, sheriff's officials said Monday.

Authorities were still looking for two people they believe drove the woman to the home where she was abused, said Logan County Chief Deputy V. K. Dingess.

The FBI, which was asked by the sheriff's department to aid in the investigation, will look into whether a hate crime occurred.

The woman's abductors called her the N-word "every time they stabbed her," the woman's mother told The Charleston Gazette for a story published Tuesday. The woman underwent surgery for leg wounds, Dingess told the paper.

Deputies found the woman Saturday after going to the home in Big Creek, about 35 miles southwest of Charleston, to investigate an anonymous tip.

One of the suspects, Frankie Brewster, was sitting on the front porch and told deputies she was alone, but moments later the woman limped toward the door, her arms outstretched, saying, "Help me," the sheriff's department said in a news release.

Besides being sexually assaulted, the woman had been stabbed four times in the left leg and beaten, Logan County sheriff's Sgt. Sonya Porter said. Her eyes were black and blue. The wounds were inflicted at least a week ago, deputies said.

During her capture, the woman was forced to eat rat and dog feces and drink from the toilet, according to the criminal complaint filed in magistrate court. She also had been choked with a cable cord and her hair was cut, it alleges. "The things that were done to this woman are just indescribable," Porter said.

One of those arrested, Karen Burton, is accused of cutting the woman's ankle with a knife. She used the N-word in telling the woman she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaint.

Deputies say the woman was also doused with hot water while being sexually assaulted. "She wakes up in the middle of the night screaming, 'Mommy,'" the mother told the paper. "What's really bad is that we don't know everything they did to her. She is crying all the time."

The Associated Press normally does not name victims of suspected sex crimes, and is not identifying the mother to protect the identity of her daughter.

The six suspects were arrested Saturday and Sunday. Deputies were still trying to determine whether the woman knew her assailants, Porter said.

Brewster, the 49-year-old who owns the home where the alleged attacks occurred, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony investigation.

Her son, Bobby R. Brewster, 24, also of Big Creek, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony.

Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, is charged with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.

Her daughter Alisha Burton, 23, of Chapmanville, and George A. Messer, 27, of Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony and battery.

Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding.

All six were held Monday in lieu of $100,000 bond each, and all have asked for court-appointed attorneys.
Uh, yeah. First the Jena 6 and now this. This country's going great.

There's nothing to even say about this, really. It's beyond sick and beyond disturbing. I hope the people that did this stay in prison for the rest of their lives.

With some "luck", they'll be raped and tortured by angry black inmates.
And yet there will be someone who will argue that hate crime laws are wrong.

Why did this happen?

I'm starting to think the confederacy should have separated. There is something dark and evil about southern culture.

WEST Virginia. They were part of the Union. Although, if you're Canadian, you might not know that.

Yeah, and if you throw salt on us we burn.

I'm not saying all southerners are bad. Hell, I vacationed in North Carolina for my entire childhood and have nothing but fond memories of the locals. That said, I was an arayan dreamchild with straight parents. I have no doubt that if I had two dads or I was black I wouldn't have been treated as well. If you have a problem with the old testament, vengeful, angry, ignorant streak in southern culture, cool, because so do I.

I hope their anuses prolapse from repeated abuse.

Just to clarify, I absolutely do. I wouldn't miss a good portion of the South. I was just fact-checking.

I have a huge problem with any sick fucks who fill in their missing mental puzzle pieces with the suffering of other people. Unfortunately, those types exist in all manner of geography and even in other countries. (Paging Paul Bernardo.)

Some types of behavior exceed all manner of extra labels we apply to them. This is just inhuman regardless of what accent it speaks in.

I am not kidding when I say his crimes happened just down the street from where I live. I run by the new house they built sometimes when I'm out training. I don't know how can anyone can live on that property.

It happens everywhere, but it happens more in the South than almost anywhere else in the first world. Hatred is ingrained in southern culture. Even in private, no Canadians sided with Paul Bernardo. I bet a sizable chunk of rednecks nodded their heads when they heard 'bout the nigger being put in her place.

A sizable chunk of the south still hasn't forgiven the north for getting rid of slavery.

I like how I used to think I had exaggerated view of what could happen if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time in the south due to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Deliverance, etc. I guess I was wrong.

I'm amazed how people can condemn racism, and then spew forth a different form of the same ignorant bigotry. I don't suppose you have any research backing up your bald assertions, anything like facts or evidence? Or perhaps you're just stating what you want to be true because it's still hip and PC to be biggotted against certain groups.

The people in this story are some sick fucks, on par with the Firefly family, except not in the fun, campy movie kind of way, but rather in the they-need-to-be-removed-from-society kind of way. Attempting to generalize that into some grand theory of southern culture is imbecilic at best.

Hate-crime charges are not going to be pursued in this case becasue charges at the state level carry a harsher penalty than the federal charges would, and hate crime statutes are federal.

I read this morning that the Feds are holding of any hate-crime prosecution due to the fact that it would end up being redundant in this case.

Which, suprisingly, is the right decision by the Feds. There's no need to spend the money pursuing Hate Crime charges if these sub-humans are given appropriate penalties at the state level. I support Hate Crime legislation, but only in the cases where it's necessary to ensure suitable punishment.

Most people understand that only a minority of people in the south are hateful, racist bastards; I hope that goes without saying. Unfortunately, they are a bigger minority in the south than almost anywhere else in the western hemisphere, certainly more than anywhere else in North America. Just look at all the marriage amendments that were passed during the last federal election, those were political tools designed to get people out to the polls for the sake of oppressing a harmless minority.

If all you can say when confronted with the hateful aspects of southern culture is 'racist!', or that I'm saying this to be cool, you need to look closer at the world around you. I sincerely hope that one day the south will be as tolerant and open as the north, but right now it's not, and no amount of anger will change that. In fact, the anger might make it worse.
In my own limited and anecdotal experience, the "North" is just as racist as the "South", they're just better at hiding it.

Graynadian, you're spewing forth an awful lot of bunk opinion that you seem to be trying to present as fact.

I'm just saying.

These sick fuckers can't go to jail fast enough. And I hope they're there for the rest of their lives, and have a slow, torturous, agonizing existence every day for years to come.

And naturally, this isn't limited to the south. I'm originally from NJ, and I went to high school with a girl who's cousin was killed exactly in this manner. She was white, as were her killers. And it was a gang of them. They raped her, stabbed her, chopped off her hair, poured paint all over her, then bleach, then gasoline. I forget if they ultimately killed her by stabbing, or if they killed her when they set her on fire. She may have already been dead by the time they torched her. Her cousin whom I went to school with lived with her uncle, who was the dead girl's father. Even after these fuckers went to jail, that poor guy was just like a hollow shell. Needless to say, he was never the same again - she was his only daughter. Even having his niece living with him didn't help. Anyway, they didn't find her body for quite a few weeks - it was assumed she ran away, then they found her corpse.

Also, I know LD already pointed this out, but let me repeat it: West Virginia is not a Southern state.

See, Graynadian, there are evil, racist fucks everywhere.

You guys sure are going to a lot of unnecessary effort to debunk a guy that once claimed that being accused of rape was as bad, if not worse, than being raped.

"Just look at all the marriage amendments that were passed during the last federal election, those were political tools designed to get people out to the polls for the sake of oppressing a harmless minority."

True. And 6 out of the 11 states that passed them in 2004 (they were still state elections, even though some national-level offices were up for vote) were far from Deep South states (Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, and Utah). It's depressing that playing to people's ignorance and prejudices works this well. But the fact that it wasn't a geographically-centric occurance vacates the finger-pointing at one area and doesn't really serve to advance any debate or progress. It makes people feel comfortable to say, "Yeah, but the real yahoos live in this area," but that only distracts us from the bigotry and deviance we have wherever we live. Look around yourself and you're sure to find one swamp or another that needs draining.

Yeah, good point. For a second, I forgot that it was Rapenadian we were dealing with here.

Don't fuck around Brad, I said that being falsely accused of rape feels worse than falsely claiming rape. This was in response to the media plastering the faces of innocent Duke lacrosse players across front pages.

Without the national enquirer, I hope you don't fall back on handjobs for a living.

Off topic- this bird and monkey love story almost deserves its own thread.

I'm worried about the monkey. If something happens to the bird, the monkey is definitely going to kill itself.

Poor monkey. He probably could have chosen a better friend. Speaking as a bird owner (to add to the bizarrely high cute quotient of this thread, see below), I can tell you that they aren't very cuddly creatures. Stunning conversationalists, though.

Your bird on the right looks like my late parakeet, P.J., MsZooey. That dude lived forever - I got him for my 17th birthday, and he died when I was 30. He talked pretty well, too, actually.

Jacob hasn't got the market cornered on ridiculously cute cats. Here's my little old man:

That would be Otis, the mighty lutino. He's four. His compatriot, Marvin, is almost three.

Wow, this is much more pleasant than fighting about Southerners. Sorry to derail though. Everyone pile back on Graynadian now. I'll get out of the way.

Edit - LD, We're actually communicating with all of you from 1943. Surprise!

Or, we could all make LOLCATS, and post them, and then vote on who made the funniest LOLCAT. Maybe we could even get Jean Teasdale to do some judging!

Edit: if you perceive any snark there, as opposed to good-natured humor, it's not intended.

The monkey-bird connection is "awwww" inspiring, but I want to see how that pig-tiger thing plays out in the next year.
