DaveB IS Jesus on toast!

By the way, I went ahead and started a pet thread. We can all get sentimental about our beasts over there.

NOW BACK TO REDNECK RAPE...

I think someone just earned themselves a green box!

EDIT: Or...spread it blah blah blah

This crap would happen more often, if southerners took more time away from fucking their cousins/livestock.

Tying it all together.

I came up with a good one for Jacob's cats, but I thought better of it. Instead -

This thread really needs a racist cat to tie everything together.
If so, I should have put up the one I thought of for Jacob's cats.

Everybody knows cats are the most racist of the entire animal kingdom.

Oh, go on, you know you want to...

And I like the one of my cat - he does actually sit around and think about that all day. He's very socially conscious when he's not barfing up hairballs.

My cat isn't a racist. Some of his best friends are black.

I'm starting to wonder if by posting Hitler Cat if I've somehow Godwin'ed the thread?

I saw Jesus in a piece of toast once. Damn tasty piece of toast it was too. But that might have been the strawberry jam...

Reading this thread, I went from being disgusted to giggling uncontrollably.
I think all bad news threads should end with cute animal pictures. Just as a palate cleanser.

I want to add that if people took my comments as a generalization of all Southern people, or mistook thought I was naming hate as the dominant aspect of Southern culture, those were not my intentions. I was thinking today about all the great Southern people I know of and have met, from MLK to Jimmy Carter to Jim Wallace to the Southern Chewers, my Southern uni friends and all the generous souls in North Carolina, and I realized I had to make my point clearer than I did.

That South is not a largely hateful place, but it has yet to fully shake its hateful past, and there are still large segments of the population which wish bad things upon others for no other reason than the colour of their skin or the nature of their heart. I know the good Southerners will win, they have been for fourty years.

Please shut up. Please. Southerners don't need a lecture on race from a Canadian (National Motto: 98% white for over 200 years!).
Gotta love generalizations about the South from people who have never spent a significant amount of time here. And no, vacations don't count.

I think that "My city is blacker than yours" should be official CHUD code for "I don't know what the hell I'm talking about and I'm going to prove it right now."
When I asked Graynadian to shut up, I was doing it for his benefit, not mine.
It's really for everyone's benefit at this point, don't you think?
Oh, definitely. But I was hoping to save him from himself. I know that such charity runs contrary to my hateful Southern nature, but even I have my moments...

My city is hispanic-ier than any of all y'alls. The outdoor air actually smells like delicious fresh tortillas. Top that, you jerks!

As long as we're clear that it's the messenger you have a problem with and not the message. I'm not allowed to say that the South is the most racist part of North America because I'm not a Southerner. Is it a blanket statement with little insight into the causes? Yes, but it's also true. Ask me to explain myself, don't tell me I'm wrong or unqualified to speak on the issue.

You're not wrong or unqualified to speak on the issue because you're not a Southerner, you're wrong and unqualified to speak on the issue because you are attempting to present your vague, unquantifiable opinion as a fact. This "no one's willing to hear the truth because they don't like me" garbage is so tired and it's just an easy out, really. If you can somehow prove that the south is, in some quantifiable way, more racist than any other part of the country, I'm willing to hear it. Go ahead, but don't forget that I'm typing this in a city that, until recently, was the most segregated in the United States* and I'm a lot closer to your neck of the woods than I am to the Mason-Dixon line.

*Matter of fact, while you're at it, take a look at the other cities they list in that article - only one of them is below the Mason-Dixon Line.

Represent!

Seriously, there are sick fucks all over the place. Sick, racist fucks, even.

I for one, LOVE Bad Boys 2 and hail from WV. That's got to stand for something.

ETA:that is quantifiable.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to MissZooey again.

Graynadian, you said that "hatred is ingrained in southern culture." There's only one way you can mean that, despite your half-assed explanations. And making a statement like that just lays bare your ignorance of the issue, especially when your Southern experience consists of some summer vacations. So, yeah, you are wrong on the issue, and your ignorance makes you unqualified to speak about it.
Deep-frying things is ingrained in southern culture.

Such as deep-fried racism.

There may be a problem with the way that Graynadian stated his case, but it seems pretty hard to deny that the cases of racism that come out of the south are often much more despicable than you find anywhere else. Of course it is wrong to make a blanket statement about all Southerns being racist, but things like the Jena 6 and the segregated dances in Georgia are shocking to my transplanted Yankee ears.

I don't know if I can agree with you entirely, englebert, but I see what you're saying. The south may be capable of perpetuating some real horrors, but we have to ask ourselves if these overt cases of violence and bigotry are more damaging or if the kind of creeping, institutionalized nastiness that the good folk in my community are capable leaves minorities worse off. At least we can all look at something like this story out of West Virginia and say "that's sick," whereas something like the suburban wisdom in Milwaukee that teaches white teens to be deathly afraid of crossing the bridges that span the Milwaukee River (here's a map if anyone's interested. FWIW, it's "safe" again once you hit 76th Street) is more persistent, widespread, and difficult to address.
I won't deny that racial tensions aren't still a problem in the South. But many of these problems come about not because most Southerners are intrinsically more racist than most Northerners, but that blacks and whites live side-by-side in a lot of communities.

To put it another way: There isn't a problem with segregated dances in, say, New Hampshire. There's also nothing but white people in New Hampshire.
I think you're absolutely right. As someone who is mixed race, it is just scary to think what could happen if the wrong people got their hands on me.
I hear you, englebert and, as a white woman, recognize that fear. Isn't it fun to wonder who might have a problem with you in any given situation?

On a related note, it's worth noting that we're focusing, for fairly obvious reasons, on the race of the poor person involved in this attack, but we're not talking about her gender at all. So much of the horrific violence in our culture is perpetuated against women, regardless of their ethnicity or where they live. The same thing happened with the Don Imus case - the media was far more focused on the racial slur than the incredible, sexist presumption behind his statement.

This argument makes sense to me, but there are a lot of rural communities in Washington state (where I am from) that have large communities of Hispanic immigrants and I see don't people breaking out nooses to make a 'point'. Also, I may be wrong, but it seems like a big problem in these problematic Southern communities is that neighborhoods are largely segregated so there is a minimum of everyday interaction. In places with lower minority populations, integrated neighborhoods are unavoidable and so there are personal relationships that foster understanding between races. I'm sort of talking out of my ass based on anecdotal evidence, so let me know if find that this is not the case.
Careful, Zooey. This is where Rapenadian comes in to tell us that "misogyny is ingrained in American culture."
You're right, Joe. I'm sorry. I keep forgetting my place. Let me go wash the dishes and fix you some dinner.

No, I think there's truth in both of our points. It just goes to show that the issue is far more complicated than some people would have you believe.

So true. With race it is so easy to claim ignorance, but with women you should at least learn some appreciation through family.
