Yes, true - but in one of the threads where Chewers talk about actors they love who seem to have vanished off the face of the earth, quite a few people (myself included) have mourned the loss of Bridget Fonda, who apparently left acting behind to crank out Elfman babies.

And the ratio of French people staying in Quebec. And we don't surrender nor run away.

Hear, hear!
Elfman babies? As in Danny? I hadn't heard that. That might explain his recent work. He's too distracted to write actual melodies.
(Off topic de-rail: ) Yup, as in Danny - they've been married since 2003, and have one kid, so correction - Elfman baby, singular. Of course she'll always be my hero for a) being a cool chick anyway but mostly for b), boinking Eric Stoltz for eight years. I just want to take her out for lattes, sit down across from her and say... "TELL ME!!! Tell me every single detail of what he's like in bed!"

Back to the pets! I'm convinced my friend Sara's cat Sydney is going to kill her in her sleep one day. He just looks like the type.

Having lived with cats for twenty or more years, I'm convinced they're *all* the type.

Fair enough. Now back to the pets.

Due to her Siberian origins, you may call my spy dog Katinka: Doom from the Iron Curtain. And she could kill Jason Bourne.

I've felt for some time that cats don't actually care whether you live or die. If you mysteriously disappeared, and someone else moved into your house and started feeding the cat, they'd be okay with it.

But then, I'm a dog person.
I don't know, maybe it's because I've turned Edison into a mal-adjusted momma's boy, but he gets panicky when I go from one room to the other. And he does this actual sort of whining if he's not getting enough attention, or if I'm on the phone, or trying to sleep, etc. It's like this little frustrated half-meow as he wanders around. I've absolutely sissified this cat.

Old pictures (new ones coming eventually, I promise!)
Here's Patch...

and his big brother, Stitch.

Both of 'em are very affectionate to me and my wife, but they bolt and hide if anyone else comes over, even after years of visitors. If these two are conspiring to take over the world, they have serious antisocial tendencies to deal with first.

I left my backpack open to air out a little bit, and of course, this happens:

Well, of course, Richard. Why on earth would you leave it zipped and deprive her of yet another place to nap? I'm sure there are only a few dozen or so spots around the house for her to catch some z's, you inconsiderate bastard.
Does anyone else here have a cat that enjoys the taste of plastic bags? My cat can't seem to get enough of them. I come home with the groceries and my wife essentially has to play defense while I put everything away or we'll turn around and find him eating the handles off all the bags. It's like an addiction. None of my friends' cats do this...
I know my mom's cat likes the smell of plastic bags, but I don't think she eats them. Which would make plastic bags the only thing that gigantic cat won't eat...

We got a new parakeet about a month and a half ago. Meet Wilson. He shares the family obsession -

Plus, he's brutally cute and weird -

We have a cat that will stick his head in plastic bags and lick them for hours if you let him. We can't leave any of them floating around the house loose or he'll keep you up all night.
My cat LOVES hiding in plastic baggies. Sometimes I'll pick him up inside of the bad and swing it around like a mini tilt-a-whirl. He doesn't eat them, though.

One of my cat's more recent peccadilloes is that he taunts the dog while the dog is in its crate. On several occasions, I've found the cat perched on top of the crate with its paw stretched downward doing a little "tappa tappa tappa" to try and wake up the sleeping lab.

Oh, it being zipped shut wouldn't have stopped her. She loves laying on black bags. My fiance has a green back the cat won't go near, but she'll go out of her way to find her black laptop back and lay on it. And I've got a pair of black pants in our closet that looks like it's made of angora now.

Wilson's so cute, Zooey! How are they getting along so far?

Edison loves eating anything that's small enough to fit in his mouth and that isn't nailed down. I'm really careful with plastic bags and things that drop on the floor. If I see him noshing on something, but he's nowhere near his bowl, I come running. Here's the gross part - you'll love this. Every so often if he loses a whisker? He'll eat it when it falls out. Which, since they're kind of sharp and spiney on the ends, they poke his stomach if he gets one down before I can pull it out of his mouth. Then of course, it hurts him, and he barfs it back up. Every once in a while, if I'm cleaning up his barf, I'll notice a whisker poking up out of it. He's just so gross - he's my baby, but he's really nasty with the stuff he eats.

I won't bother to describe the post-knoshed plastic bag...

You know, I was a bit worried about this, as I've heard horror stories about introducing a new bird to the mix and because Marvin was so attached to Otis, but they are completely and totally obsessed with each other. It's adorable. They do everything together, groom each other constantly, and we can't get them to pay attention to us. I just looked up from my screen and they're in their cage, making out. I've got the door open, they could get out and play if they'd like, but no. Making. out. Go. away.

Surely that's PRECISELY the reason that make cats SOOOOO AWESOME!!
They're survivors, like us.
Our one cat, Patch, likes nibbling on cardboard on occasion, but he likes messing with things that make noise. If he sees a plastic or paper bag, in he goes, making it crinkle as much as he can. The other cat, Stitch, can't be bothered with any of that shit. He'll occasionally grab one of his toy mousies and drop it in the water bowl, and stare at it like an Olympic swim coach.
My cat "Scout" left me a tiny bird's head and foot in front of my bathroom door the other day. It was pretty fucking morbid.
My cat has gone missing - she's an indoor cat and apparently got out yesterday. My fucking day is ruined.
Chavez, if you can do so, leave your main door open- Even when you sleep. Chances are, she'll come back.

More than once we've had our door blow open (hence our now obsession with the deadbolt), come home to all of our cats in the driveway. When that's happened, if we leave the door open long enough, the straggler will come back.

(If you have a garage door, leave that open a foot or two at the bottom and leave your main door open, if you have to leave or need a bit more security.)
Yeah, I wouldn't panic just yet. We once had a cat who disappeared for a month, then turned up under the porch. I think that cats who are kept indoors all the time start to crave adventure after a while.
I have a window in my basement my cat goes in and out of. No litter box to clean, and I rarely see her on nice days during the summer. She's spayed so no worries there. She does love to jump in bed when she's been out in the rain to dry off though.

Exactly!
Now if this happened with a DOG I'd be worrying.

Just out of interest, I spent my formative years (65-74) living in Houston, and from then I remember dogs chasing all manner of wheeled vehicles...sometimes suicidally; but can't recall this happening at all in the last 25 years.
Has that particular gene/trait been Darwinianly removed from the family Canidae? Or does this still happen?
I hadn't thought about it, but I haven't seen that behavior in years either. When I was a kid, I saw it all the time. Interesting.

Chavez, any news yet? Has she come home? I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that she's okay and comes home fast.

Okay, so this is going to make my wife and me look like morons...and feel free to call me a moron, but leave the woman alone!

We have several cubby holes upstairs, and we had looked in ALL of them; I searched the house calling for Harley, and after I told my wife I couldn't find the cat, SHE searched the house calling for her. I had last seen her at around 4 o'clock yesterday. All day today, no cat - no trips to the litter box, no coming down for food, nothing. And since we had a barbecue/sleepover yesterday with drunk people in and out of the house all day and night, I didn't think it was a stretch that the cat had zipped out the door when we weren't paying attention.

So I'm sorta bummed and about an hour ago, my wife yells "Harley!" and there's the damn cat, sitting at the top of the stairs. She had socked herself away in some nook upstairs and stayed there for like 24 hours.

Needless to say, my mood improved tremendously.

I think the cat taking Aurora's soul would be vengeance for all the tail-yanks that have already occurred and those still to come.

Hey, I take exception to being characterized as a drunk person. When I left your house yesterday, I believe I was the "totally hot wife." That was the cheap Canadian beer talking, wasn't it, you tease?

I'm glad to hear that Rory still has both her soul and a kitty to torment.

Oh, and to throw my ass into this thread again, I just got a new cat. He's fucking awesome, and it pains me to say that because before this guy I absolutely hated cats. Still do. But this one fits me perfectly... he's just very chill and likes to hang out with me when I'm writing or watching movies, so points all around.

(Only place you'll see The Devil's Rain and Pinky in the Brain laying on top of each other...)

Also- I'm a bad influence on him.

Won't tell you his name because he came with it and it's lame.
Ooo... a Russian Blue. Such gorgeous cats. They're well known for being mellow little gentlemen, too.

You, of course, have to tell us his name now.
Don't worry - we'll get Alex drunk at the next NY Chewer get together and get it out of him. He's a beautiful cat, Alex!

Chavez, glad to hear she came back! Hey, it's better to feel stupid that she was in the house the whole time than to not have her back. Glad it worked out.

I adopted a 8-year-old chihuahua from the local animal shelter today. She spent her whole life having pups in a damn puppy mill. This little bitch is going to spend the rest of her life being spoiled, that's for sure. I had to pay to have her spayed before I get to take her home. She has her surgery Monday, so I should get her for keeps Tuesday afternoon.

Man, I'm the same way. I'm such a mother hen to my cats it's pathetic. My cats are indoor/outdoor (I have a fenced in backyard, but they naturally manage to get over it. So they roam a bit, mostly the two young ones. Two days in a row this week the young male, Linus, has been caught outside in summer afternoon thunderstorms. And of course, I keep going out on both porches, calling for him like a lunatic. And both times, he's made it back to the back porch (while the storms were still raging) soaking wet. Both times he was out in the storms for well over an hour.

And I'm so relieved to see him back it's ridiculous.

Good for you. To be honest, I still feel a little guilty that I adopted a dog who originally came from a breeder. The couple who owned him were picky about where they left him, so there was no doubt he would have ended up in a good home if we hadn't taken him. I feel kind of like there's a dog out there who's situation I could have improved, and didn't.

I know that doesn't make a whole lot of logical sense, but it kind of nags at me.
Jacob, glad your kitty is home safe!

Congratulations on the new dog, Bark! Pictures? Please? This thread has been silent for too long.

Don't feel guilty, Greg. Jagger still needed a home. And you don't know how it would have panned out for him. Maybe he'd have found someplace where he would have been happy, or maybe he would have been adopted by assholes. You can't second guess what's already a good situation now that you have him. And if there's room in your home, you can always adopt another shelter pet to even things out. Or - if not, you can donate some disposable income to the shelter of your choice. Either way, I think your karma's in a good place - you gave a home to an animal who needed one, regardless of his background.

It sort of reminds me of the situation my best friend from HS's wife was in. They just got a dog from a pet shop. They didn't intend to - she was just walking through the mall with their baby, and on a whim, she decided to see how the baby would react to a dog, since they talked about getting one when he was big enough.

So they see this bichon, and he's been marked down. Drastically. The poor guy was the blue light special at the pet shop, and my buddy's wife honestly didn't know what was going to happen to him. Do they put dogs to sleep who are too old to be adopted? Because that was his only situation - he was just too old to be a puppy. I think he was the ripe old age of eight months. Anyway, she didn't want to chance it. She wasn't sure if they'd put him to sleep just for not being young enough to sell, but she didnt' want to find out. She took the baby over to him, and the baby and the dog fell in love instantly. And - bingo. They now have a dog. Yes, they would have preferred a shelter dog, but she also feels that in her own way she rescued him, because who knows what the pet shop's practices are? Anyway - his name is Mozart, and he has a mom and dad who love him, and he's also got his own 10 month old kid! Lucky dog.
