Ellie

Today, I rescued this little gem of a cat. Her name is Ellie and she can blend in with cows. I figured it would take her a bit to relax to her new surroundings, but she's already marching around the damn place and playing with all her new toys.

Behold Ringo Dingo (he's gonna hate me for that when he grows up), my westie pup:

Yeah, those Birkenstocks are mine, you wanna make something about it? Its not like they are Crocs or anything.
You win, Ryoken. That is OFFICIALLY the world's cutest puppy.
I hereby give that dog an official *Cuteness Explosion*.
I accept your honors in Ringo's behalf...although some of his cuteness has worn out a bit since my nephews isist on calling him "Bolt"...I dont have the heart to tell them its a completely different breed of dog.
This is not mine, but my dad just got a new chocolate lab puppy. And yes, those are blue eyes. Weird.

He and his wife had a black lab for several years, and he died just a few months before their retirement. Now that they're settled in to their new place, they decided it was time to move on.

A blue-eyed dog? Wow.
That's the first blue-eyed dog I've seen that's not a husky. Nice.

And Ringo's awesome.

By the way Martin, I'm taking Taiga.

This page is pretty much 'cute pet nirvana' so far.

You actually just have to wave food at her and she'll be yours. My son learned that last month, and they're best buddies forever now.

She seems to prefer duck meat and potato chips.

Thanks for the tip.
Well I'm just having a cuteness meltdown from the animals on this page I have to say.

Are two chiwawa's got together. She gave birth to four sadly two did not make it(even for a cold hearted bastard like me that was tough). The two that survived are doing well. Right now there known as fatty, and the black and white one. Born on 1/19. Here's a pic from 1/28. As of today there discovering there legs and realizing that there is a big old world outside that clothes basket.

This pretty much sums up my relationship with our cat:

We had just gotten back from a long weekend and had picked up our cat from my fiancee's mother's house, where she stayed while we were gone.

Here's another pic of Moo being exceptionally lazy. Note the adorable curled up feet.

See, I can't take pics like that, because I always end up rubbing dat furry belly, and the moment is lost.

Truth. Besides, laying all cute like that begs for the belly to be rubbed. You can't walk past it (even knowing upon awakening, those cute paws become painful claws for the indignity of touching the belly).

You have to understand that she's like a moody bear trap at that point. Sure, you can rub her belly, and she may very well enjoy the scratching. If Moo face is in a deep sleep in which you disturb her slumber that shit locks down.
Like you were talking about...it's a game of Russian roulette.
When my cat is asleep in a position like that, I do one of two things:
1. Rub his belly.
2. Drop a heavy object next to him and watch him peel himself off of the ceiling.

I'm going to start accumulating some volunteer hours at the humane society, and I'll be taking pictures of some of the animals there. You'd be surprised some of the thoroughbreds and such that this economy has motivated people to surrender. Having some daily cat time is going to significantly improve my life, methinks.

This thread makes me happy.

We adopted Phoebe (formerly Eve, but my name is Adam, so that didn't wash) three weeks ago. Now, the day her warranty's up, she's gone missing. She apparently developed the ability to walk through walls, because we didn't leave the house between the time she was there and the time she wasn't.

Please send good vibes our way. And if you live in the Twin Cities area and see an adorable tortoiseshell with the tip of her tail lost to frostbite, please give me a call.

ETA: One more for posterity:

Sorry to be a downer, but I just found out today that my roughly-10-year-old Rottie mix, Honey, most likely has cancer. I'm pretty torn up about it, don't know how I can afford treatment (if it's even feasible), or how to tell my 4 year old daughter if things get terminal.

The next step is to make an appointment with an internal specialist, so they can check her marrow, etc. Her lymphocites are VERY high and irregular. She's had a bad history with her health before (gastro-intestinal, 2 blown out knees) and things don't look optimistic overall. Anyone else deal with pet cancer before (sorry if I'm opening old wounds)?
I was going to tell you what it was like when my dog had cancer but I realize it's a story that won't make you feel any better. I've known lots of people with dogs that lived after they had cancer but treatment was expensive. All I can say is sorry and I know how you feel. We couldn't afford to treat our dog either.

Pathology confirms acute leukemia. Treatment wouldn't help her. She doesn't have much longer (a couple weeks at most) and we'll have to help her go to avoid her suffering. I've been a mess.

Yes! So concerned with getting the pics to work in the post I forgot to ETA the cat was in an alcove in the basement we didn't even know existed. And in a nice little ego boost, she only responded to my voice, which evens the scales, as Loki has been a ladies' man from the beginning.

Ugh, sorry to hear about your baby, 'Mite. Best of luck to you and the family.

Appreciate the kind words from everyone. Anyone have any experience breaking the news to kids?
Not me, but I'm dreading doing so later on...

sorry about the news, Mite. I had a dog who got cancer when I was young, and trust me, at a certain point, you'll know when it's time. Easing his suffering is the best you can do.

Aw. George Carlin was right when he said that "life is just a series of dogs." I've lost a few, too.

When I was younger, I spent weeks helping my parents take care of a new cat we discovered had feline leukemia. Even worse, we already had 3 other cats. We had to rotate them around rooms, constantly sterilize things, and otherwise prevent the others from coming into contact and contracting something. It was terrible to watch her go, but we did all we could to make her happy before she did.

I've been there 'Mite, and you have my thoughts. I hope your little girl takes it as well as possible, given the circumstances.

If I may lighten things a little bit, here are some photos from the time I've spent at the Savannah, GA Humane Society...

...I didn't write down any of these fellas names, but they were all very sweet.
Here's some pictures of Ivey and I handling a couple of kitties (the only reason I look depressed is because I'm aware that I have to shave off my beard later)...

...I've been very impressed with the Savannah HS. The turnover rate is superb, and very inspiring. Ivey and I have been four times, and not a single cat that was there on our first visit was still there at the fourth. Typically, every time we've gone back there was only one or two cats still there since the last time- they do a great job of getting these cats home. Best thing is, once an animal is up for adoption, they are kept until they are adopted. So if a cat is missing the next time you return, it's only because it's found a home.

Another small picture:

Pongo tried to stop me from going back to Savannah after spring break in his own way...

Aww man, I miss having cats.

Went home a couple weeks ago and enjoyed some quality time with my dog Maya.

Rescued her from the pound a few years ago. When we first got her we thought she was a husky/german shepherd mix, but she was young and malnourished. Since then she's gotten rather big (about 85 pounds) so we're now thinking she's a malamute, possibly with something else thrown in.

She was a bit of a handful in the early days, but she's mellowed over the years and become quite the sweetheart.
Nice dog. That's definitely a malamute mix.

Ha, thanks. You don't know the half of it.

She actually got hit by a car a couple years ago, and managed to walk away from it with relatively minor injuries. She had a hairline fracture running down her nose, and broke the bone around her left eye. She actually has an indent there now, but otherwise there are no lasting effects. She's lucky that it wasn't more serious, but the fact remains:

Maya: 1, Car: 0

Darkmite, I'm very sorry about your dog. I honestly wish you and your family the best.

bendrix, glad you found your cat and that it was OK.

Renn, you're awesome, as is the shelter! It's rough for me to go into a pet store or shelter (they have one at Freehold Raceway Mall) without wanting to bring 'em all home or worry about them all getting adopted. My wife says i'm just a big softie (my father-in-law has an old cat that's being taken care of by the folks in his retirement community, as he's been transferred to a rest home due to medical reasons. My wife and I would take the cat in, but she's declawed and would no doubt be destroyed by our two cats - breaks my heart).

I hear that. We have to go to the PetSmart atleast once every other week for cat & dog food, and they inevitably have an adoption day whenever we go. It's rough seeing the ones who are scared or sick (heartworm is almost a guarantee with strays here in FL). Poor sweeties.

One of our cats died today, which doubly sucked as it was also my nan's funeral.

However I still have two little critters to cheer me up Fluffy and Nibbler.

Fluffy being a hairless cat (the wife named him) and Nibbler being a cute black and white cat with a tail that belongs on a monkey.

This is Fluffy ...

Sorry to hear about your losses, Ken. Good to know Fluffy and Nibbler are cheering you up, though!

My folks got a new cat yesterday! The story goes that about six months or so ago, their Maine Coon cat, Jesse (who was the toughest, ballsiest, muy macho cat I ever saw. Cat chased dogs back in the day, no lie) passed away after 23+ years. My best friends family are always taking in new pets, and they'd recently acquired a stray cat named Bubba (big black cat with spots of white, and quite the snuggler). They were looking to provide him with a new home (he was terrorizing their other cats), and my folks were interested.

Anywho, the plan was to bring the cat over this weekend. Unfortunately, my best friends' dad bonded with Bubba and was getting a bit emotional about Bubba leaving. My folks completely understood, and they decided they couldn't bear to break them up. So Bubba was going to stay with my friend's family, and they would look for another cat. They went online to the local shelter's website and found this guy:

Meet Buddy ("he's your buddy, friend!" "I'm not your friend, pal!" "I'm not your pal, buddy!") - originally named Yogi, but as my folks aren't big Yankee fans, and they had a cat-shaped hole in their hearts, Buddy seemed appropriate.
Long story short, two great cats, both strays, got two great homes filled with love and lots and lots of cat toys.

And to bring us up to date, here's our two Tuxedos, Patch and Stitch, chillaxin', yo.

My deepest condolences to both Ken and DM. My heart goes out to you fellas.

My older little fella Frodo (malt-shitzu-chiwawa) is finally beginning to show a little bit of age (he's coming up to 7), his jumps aren't quite so high, he can't run as far as he used to and he's getting clingier to me and my missus as he gets older. It's not much but it's made me and my girl realise he's probably pretty much passed the halfway point of how long he'll be with us. Luckily his crazy wire haired jack russel little brother Sam is doing a good job of keeping him young cause he's a bit nuts, but my girl and I realise we have to get our head around the idea our two boys won't be with us forever.

...and I don't mind admitting I will be an absolute wreck when I lose either of them. We're most probably not gonna have kids, so there's a lotta love we put into our two furry boys. It'll be like losing a part of me. They're my two best mates.

Thanks for the comments guys, I normally don't post that sort of personal stuff but I was feeling particularly down.

Sphinx cats are scary smart; I'm telling you now it's not the monkeys we need to worry about it’s the hairless cats. He is the only cat I know that plays fetch, opens doors, and can communicate with me.

For example last night he kept jumping on me meowing and then jumping off and going to the lounge door. He did this a couple of times and I figured he wanted me to follow him. When I did he led me upstairs to our bedroom where I discovered Nibbler had corned a mouse under the dresser.

Once I had seen this he gave me a look which I swear was a “told you so” stare and sauntered off back downstairs.
