Race driver Colin McRae dies in helicopter accident.

THE former rally driving champion Colin McRae was killed and his five year-old son feared dead in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. The aircraft came down in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family's home and burst into flames just after 4pm.

Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, said the 39-year-old driver had been piloting the helicopter himself. Also on board were believed to be his son Johnny, another adult and another child. Police said there were no survivors.

McRae's wife Alison and their daughter Hollie, 9, were not on board, friends said.

He drove in the World Rally Championship. Those are events that take place mainly out in the sticks. They go screaming through dirt roads, with no fences, no signs and cliffs and trees right there off on the edge. It is pretty spectacular stuff. The reason that people here in the States can now buy a Subaru WRX has a lot to do with him winning his 1995 Championship. After WRC he went on to drive in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the X-Games and the Dakar Rally. The Dakar Rally is an event that takes some serious stones.

Beyond that, he was one of the few remaining big name sports stars who would tell you things as they were, not how the sponsors or team would necessarily want you to tell them.

He was a pretty cool guy, and fearlessly fast. As the rally guys tend to be. He effectively retired from the sport a few years ago. Amazing to think that both him and Richard Burns are now dead.

RIP Colin...truly was one of the greatest rally drivers ever. Won for Subaru years ago, and remained the face of WRC for many years to follow.
