BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD Discussion

Be prepared folks. I haven't seen No Country for Old Men yet, but this movie really blew me away in the "Badass" category thus far this year, has one of the best Albert Finney performances ever, and the most haunting ending I've seen yet from a film this year.

I'm not sure when this one gets released, but it's a fucking knockout.

NO COUNTRY is better (much better, actually) but this one is indeed very, very good.

Huh, the both of you just got me really excited for this. The trailer didn't do much for me, but now I'm looking forward to it.

I'm sure No Country is better, but in context to what I've seen this year, Devil certainly is a cut above many others. A real breath of fresh air that, for me, is a primer of things to come this fall.

Wasn't the whole plot given away in the trailer earlier this year?

But more importantly Tomei nudity was given away. But yeah the trailer showed way to much plot.

That French trailer gives away a lot, but most of what it shows you'll know in the first 20 minutes. There's far less telegraphed in there than it seems.

I was walking by a movie theater and was surprised to find this had already come out here (although it goes by the title 7:58 ON A SATURDAY). Overall, it was a good movie, although it drags a bit in the center, Marisa Tomei is nothing more than a plot device, and the switching narrative got old after awhile. On the plus side, all the actors are in top form (including a nice bit part by Michael Shannon), some really good scenes (there's a shot of Hoffman walking through an apartment room that I thought was excellent), and Marissa Tomei's breasts......damn.

And yeah, while the trailer does give a good bit away, none of it was meant to be a "shocking" reveal.

I sure would like to see this movie. Got excited when I saw it in the new release column on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately it's only playing in one theater... in New York. Yeah, fuck LA, why put a movie out there? Bastards.

Why hasn't anyone from LA or NY chimed in on this. Come on! Get to the theater already, this movie demands your attention!

Thanks to the wonders of international film distribution, I finally got to see this. Absolutely terrific film though, Hoffman and Finney were excellent, even Ethan Hawke turned in a great performance, Marisa Tomei was good. It took me a few minutes to realize the mother was played by Rosemary Harris, that's one tough old woman.

Hoffman though completely elevated the film with his performance, that breakdown in the car was riveting "it's not fair, IT'S NOT FUCKING FAIR"

This is the best film Lumet has made in years, even though the editing choices are very questionable, it's impeccably acted and directed.

I saw this a while ago, and it still stuns me that this film was horribly overlooked during awards season. Such a damn shame considering how great this movie was.

I just got to watch the DVD of this film.

Tomei... wwwwwwwwwwow. Hummunahummuna...

The film was good too. I wish I hadn't read this thread before watching it, but it was still very good. Had no idea it was shot on HD. Lumet still makes it feel like film.

Fantastic film. I watched it twice in the same weekend, which I don't normally do.

While some have complained about the narrative-hopping, I personally love the device of revisting scenes in order to peel back layers of subtext and fill in the plot holes.

And Marisa Tomei: god DAMN. Has she always been that hot, or did I just never notice...?

I saw this flick a couple months ago - outstanding.. pretty much sums up my opinion on it.

This is just bracing and brutal. The kind of film that makes you feel a little uneasy after watching it. It's also fascinating seeing Lumet's cynicism not drop an iota in his twilight years. In fact this film is probably an ode to how versatile and great a director he was, fully embracing digital recording and making something that feels hard nosed and hard edged and surprisingly modern.

Philip Seymour-Hoffman is fantastic, as usual, in this. He's one of these actors who I never think of as being particularly threatening, but he's brought real fury and danger to a whole bunch of roles. I kind of like how believable his trip off the deep end is in this, his screaming rages giving way to something far calmer, at least on the surface. His intensity kind of blows everyone else out of the water and Ethan Hawke doesn't seem to be able to keep up with him at all. It doesn't help that the character is kind of weak in its inception, torn between people who hate him and people who want to use him.

Gotta give some love to the score by Carter Burwell. I love his work with the Coens and whilst this does seem to have a hint of his previous work I kind of love how all encompasing it is. The score in this film almost feels like a part of the character, lurking around the edges.
