Federal Prosecutor Arrested In Child Sex Sting

POSTED: 2:04 pm EDT September 17, 2007
UPDATED: 4:26 pm EDT September 17, 2007

DETROIT -- A U.S. Justice Department official has been arrested on suspicion of traveling to Detroit over the weekend to have sex with a minor.

John David R. Atchison, 53, an assistant U.S. attorney from the northern district of Florida, was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Detroit Monday afternoon.

An undercover officer posed as a mother offering her child to Atchison for sex, according to police.

Prosecutors said Atchison flew from Pensacola, Fla., to Detroit on Sunday intending to have sex with the 5-year-old girl.

He was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

He is charged with enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity.

According to authorities, Atchison made contact with a detective working undercover for the Macomb County Sheriff's department's.

The detective, acting as the child's mother, allegedly arranged a sexual encounter between Atchison and her 5-year-old daughter, police said.

In deposition, detectives said Atchison suggested the mother tell her daughter that "you found her a sweet boyfriend who will bring her presents."

The undercover detective expressed concern about physical injury to the 5-year-old girl as a result of the sexual activity. Detectives said Atchison responded, " I am always gentle and loving; not to worry, no damage ever, no rough stuff ever. I only like it soft and nice."

The undercover detective asked how Atchison can be certain of no injury. He responded, "Just gotta go slow and very easy. I've done it plenty," according to detectives.

Atchison, a member of the Florida bar association since 1984, lives in Gulf Breeze, Fla., near Pensacola.

He is president of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, a youth athletics organization. His wife is a science teacher at Gulf Breeze High School.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Department and the FBI were a part of the investigation.

I feel ill. Really ill.

Is Department of Justice turning into some weird sort of Orwellian doublethink term?
Wow. Uh, wow. That's just wow. You have to be a pretty big level of fucked up to try and explain away your pedophilic behavior after you've been caught.
I'm sure we'll find out that he's never actually had sex with a five-year-old. Certainly he was just lying to "mom" to make her feel better about turning her kindergartener over to him.
I really don't have anything to say about this, other than it made me sick to my stomach just to read that news article.
I learned in class today that kids as young as five have been known to commit suicide. When I learned this, I couldn't figure out why any five year-old would want to commit suicide. Never mind.

From the piece it sounds like he hadn't been caught yet when he said those things, that the quotes are from when he thought he was still talking to the mother and trying to "close the deal."

Which is all sorts of other kinds of fucked up and disgusting. Enjoy gen-pop, kiddy-raper.
What really gets me is that he's a pro at this.
He must be. How the fuck would you even find someone to do this? You just jump in a chat room somewhere and ask if anyone knows any toddlers they'd like to give up? Who the hell would be stupid enough to do that shit online?

Really sickening. Still, makes you wonder what the going rate for a 5-year old is these days.

I seriously just felt a chill go up my spine at this. Enjoy jail, hopefully for the rest of your life, kiddie rapist.

Maybe he was conducting his own supersecret sting operation to get little kids away from sick parents willing to sell them to strange adults online. See? He was doing society a service.

Seriously, I'm with Zooey. This makes me feel ill.
This article should really have been posted in the capitol punishment thread.
I'm very excited for him to discover Jesus by the time he makes a public statement about this case.

Also, I don't think he'll be seeing Gen-Pop. If he does, it won't be for more than a week before he's dead.

Cases like this make it real hard to be against the death penalty.

Florida. It figures.

My question is what do you do with someone like this after they've served their price to society? And I don't mean stupid simplistic answers like "Kill him/her." The pedophiles more often than not are shown to be victims of pedophilia themselves and still have the desires after undergoing procedures such as chemical castration. I look at it like a person who is born mentally handicapped. You can't do anything to change the situation and you can't just get rid of it either. So how do we as a society deal with pedophiles? Sick shit like what this attorney wanted to do goes on all the time worldwide and I rack my brain every time I hear about it trying to come up with some kind of manner to deal with pedophiles. Anyone have any suggestions on this?

Wow, I kinda sorta almost feel sorry for the shit his wife is gonna go through for the next few years.

You don't feel sorry? What could the wife have done to deserve this?

I think we need to round up all the pedophiles and put them on an island, away from regular society. Pedophisle.

You know society has beaten you down when news articles like this no longer surprise you in any way.

As far as I know, nothing. I also don't know whether she knew her husband was a sick fuck.

Thus: "almost feel sorry". The second I find out she didn't know squat, then I'll be worried about how this might fuck up her psyche and her life for what's left of it.

Stick them in prison and never let them come out. 100 year mandatory sentence. No parole. Either that or revive gladiatorial competitions.

Soon enough, we're gonna run out of acres for all these pedophile, abusers, murderers, rapists and pot-users.

Guillotine time. Hash-heads first in line.

Is this really becoming more common, or is information just spread faster so that it seems this way.

I know there have always been pedophiles, but in any other point in history has there been so many?

And what does that say about society?

Ancient Greece? I mean, with a different lens on it, but still.

You know, it's still creepy, but I can at least understand why an adult male would lust after a 15- or 16-year old girl. But a five-year old? Jesus, what sort of fucked-up mind does it take to come to the realization that someone not even old enough to start school is the one for you? I know it's probably coming from some twisted desire to have complete control over someone or from a background of abuse, but still, at some point something in your brain has to say "Dude, come on!"

As to Swicegood's question, if this sort of thing had happened forty or fifty years ago, there's no way it gets mentioned pubilcly. The perp probably gets sent to an asylum or otherwise quietly disappears, and the victim is probably told to never speak of it again and left with a boatload of mental problems no one is willing to talk about.

That the problem with pedophiles. That part of the brain doesn't seem to activate in them. So, what should we do about them? We could just lock them up forever and throw away the key but then that's just excessive punishment and being excessively cruel for individuals that in most circumstances are psychologically impaired. It's also the same as basically putting a bullet in their heads once their caught. As a race we have made progress from our past and now shine a light on heinous acts such as these, but how do we evolve further from here? What's the best way to punish, yet still rehabilitate these individuals? Until we figure that out, we're still going just go through the same scenario over and over: "Caught. Prison. Release. Repeat."

Make them all coal miners. Then if they get trapped in a cave-in, we don't have to worry about rescuing them.

A little more info:

Quote:
DETROIT — A U.S. prosecutor was arrested in an Internet sting operation after flying from Florida to Michigan allegedly to have sex with a 5-year-old girl, officials said.

John David Roy Atchison, 53, appeared Monday in U.S. District Court in Detroit on a charge of interstate travel to have sex with a minor. He is an assistant U.S. attorney in northern Florida.

The arrest followed several weeks of Internet conversations between the prosecutor and a detective posing as the mother of a 5-year-old girl, authorities say.

The prosecutor is charged with using interstate communication to entice a minor to have sexual contact and with traveling across state lines with the intent of engaging in illicit sexual contact. The charges carry a possible sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

Atchison, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., was arrested Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport as part of an undercover sting operation by the Macomb Area Computer Enforcement Team.

"There wasn't much reaction from him at all," said Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel, whose department runs the team. He said Atchison was cooperative with authorities.

Atchison brought a Dora the Explorer doll, hoop earrings and petroleum jelly with him from Florida, the Detroit Free Press reported.

According to court records, Atchison initiated an online chat Aug. 29 with an undercover officer posing as a mother interested in letting men have sex with her daughter.

In several conversations, he said he wanted to have oral, vaginal and anal sex with the woman's fictitious daughter, Hackel said.

"I'm always gentle and loving; not to worry; no damage ever; no rough stuff ever ever," Atchison said at one point, according to an affidavit filed in court.

"I've done it plenty," he said.

Hackel said his department brought in federal authorities after it became clear that the case involved an out-of-state suspect.

The arrest has come as a shock in Florida, where Atchison is president of a community sports organization, the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, where girls as young as 4 can participate in the soccer program.

Teresa Hawthorne, the organization's youth sports coordinator, told FOXNews.com no one from the association would comment on the case.

Atchison was a soccer and baseball coach, Lt. Rick Hawthorne of the Gulf Breeze police told the Detroit News.

"I'm shocked," Edwin "Buz" Eddy, the city manager of Gulf Breeze told the Pensacola News Journal. "That's about all I can say. I hope this is something that can be cleared up by some explanation. What that might be, I don't know."

Eddy told the paper that he had known Atchison for more than a decade and considered him a "pillar of the community."

Atchison's wife is a science teacher at Gulf Breeze High School.

The couple have three children high school age or older, according to the Detroit News.

The fact that an Internet child sex suspect is a law enforcement official shouldn't be unexpected, Hackel said.

"The people who are doing it come from all walks of life," the sheriff said. "It doesn't surprise us anymore."

Atchison asked for a court-appointed lawyer. A detention hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.
I like the Edwin guy, "I'm sure it's all a misunderstanding that can be cleared up by a simple explanation." Riiiiigggghhhttt.

There's a part of me that wants to know the whole story. To look into things and determine a reasonable and judicious outcome for everything. To give him the "innocent until proven guilty" right. To look deeper and weigh things in a fair and equitable manner.

But I have a five year old daughter. And the lion's share of me hopes that someone carrying a baseball bat gets about five minutes in a room alone with him.

I can see the conversation now:

Guard: I'm leaving to go on a break for exactly ten minutes. I don't want any of you guys doing anything to Mr. Atchison there with this baseball bat, roll of duct tape and razor wire.

Reading things like this, my mind struggles to come up with an adequate punishment.

I fully support a fucking monster like this dying. I don't for one second believe he can be rehabilitated or locked up and "think about what he did" for the rest of his life. He needs to die.

But lethal injection is just way,w ay too humane.

Nothing short of feeding him to a pack of starving wolves is really adequate.

Any animal that starts to eat your intestines while you're still concious...That would work.

While I completely understand it, the kind of bloodlust these kinds of threads stir up always frightens me a lot. It's really uncomfortable for me to see all these people who I've considered to be intelligent and rational call for a man's death, regardless of what he has done.

Again, I completely understand it, but the pacifist in me curls into the fetal position when these things start.

I think my PedophIsle idea is a reasonable compromise. We don't burn them at the stakes, but we do punish them by cutting ties. Give them their own society, where they aren't tempted. The country would be a much better place without them.

You know, except with all the murderers, rapists, sandal-wearers, and stoners. Fucking stoners.

Speaking as someone I know you would expect to call for the death of another individual (such as when they've been presumptuous enough to cut me off in traffic), it's still OK for people like yourself to say the human race would be better off without allowing another carrier of that genetic defect contaminate the gene pool further. I suggest you embrace that dark side of the human condition and let it breathe in conditions such as this.

It'll keep you sane.

Not really. My father was the Dean of Criminology at a University in Saskatchewan. He spent six years as the Director of the minimum security prison plus his wife was the warden at the Women's Max security. Supper table talk was always a little on the uncomfortable side.

I know what you mean, but I think you have to recognize these strong reactions as not necessarily true advocacy of actual institutionalized torture or the death penalty.

I think it's important to distinguish between what we'd personally like to see "happen" to someone like this and what we would have the legal system do to him in actuality. The legal system (and, on a larger scale, the government) should reflect our most calm, measured reactions to situations like this. It doesn't always do this, but, ideally, it should.

With the system at least hypothetically answering to that need, I don't think it's necessarily wrong for us private citizens to support, in some sense, this guy getting the crap kicked out of him.

My calm, measured reaction is that this guy deserves to swing.

I understand where Patrick is coming from, but on that same token, neither one of us has a child. I try to put myself in the shoes of the father of one of these children, and that is how I derive my opinion on how the perpetrator should be handled. I am no pacifist when it comes to protecting my family. That's the line that has to be crossed for me to get all John Rambo on someone. In that way I fully understand why some of you want this guy to hang.

I am TERRIFIED of bringing a child into this world when I hear of stories like this. I cannot imagine the absolute pain that comes with either losing a child to a monster like this or having the kid scarred for life after surviving abuse of this nature.

I'm a fan of equivalency myself, or what some people refer to as 'eye for an eye'.

This dude should get raped by someone 48 years older than him.

I love all this talk of rehabilitation and understanding but the simple fact is that there are some evil fuckers in the world. This guy is one of them. He should never see sunlight ever again. Not saying I want him dead. That would be a mercy. Rather I want him to wish he were dead for the next 50 years of his life sitting in a hole in the ground.

Oh, I completely agree. That is why most of the time when stories like this are posted, I keep my opinion to myself. I strive (most of the time) to never allow my emotions to guide me. However, in situations like this, when I am simply reading about it on a computer and not, say, part of a jury, I don't even bother with trying to stifle my cries of "Blast him into space!"
