Superman Doomsday

Did anyone get it?

I had completely forgotten about this until I saw an awful clip the other day.
Lex Luthor knocks a Superman clone out with kryptonite gloves, straddles him and yells out "WHY DID YOU LEAVE MEEEEEEEEEEEE??"
I have five MINT copies of Superman #75, and I don't remember seeing that in any of them.

Doomsday is such an awful villain, and The Death of Superman is such a badly presented comic that I don't think even Bruce Timm could make something watchable out of it.

No Blue Beetle coma beatdown = No Sale

I had considered getting it for about 5 seconds, but I knew it would end up being bad. With Bruce Timm it shouldn't have been bad, but I guess he just doesn't have it anymore. I mean that Brainiac Attacks movie was fucking awful, but Bruce wasn't involved with that. This was his return to Superman, and he fucked it up. Though I pretty much knew it would suck after some of the early interviews about it said how they pretty much took everything out of the Death of Superman story except for Doomsday "killing" him and him returning with a mullet. I sympathize with them a bit, since apparently DC had a lot of editorial constraints on them, like this "Superman can't bleed" nonsense.

The few clips I've seen are nothing but Superman bleeding from pretty much every orifice.

I think they could only get around it by having him bleed from his nose or ears. DC said Superman's skin is "unbreakable". Every orifice is a bit of an exaggeration though.

Apparently there's a Super-ass appearance and some curse words. Yee-haw!
Superman cursing? Huh?

I mean I'd expect profanity if they ever did an animated Gotham Central but Superman?
I've said this before, but both Doomsday and Venom were fine in their initial incarnations -- a "dark" version of Spider-Man and a nameless, out-of-the-blue unstoppable force? Great ideas for each hero. It was only after having them shoved down our throats over and over again with constantly changing motivations and characterizations that they became such bad characters, because they weren't really built to last for more than one appearance.

Well, I just finished watching this. Luckily, I didn't spend money on it and merely borrowed a friend's copy. I would say it is a mixed bag.

The animation is better than some of the other efforts, but one area where they really messed up is by adding those cheekbone lines to Supes' face. It ages him dramatically and only serves to remind you that this isn't TAS that you are watching.

Doomsday is only in there for about 15 minutes, and his 'origin' is spouted by, of all things, Superman's robot buddy. It's not like the comic book character had much motivation to begin with, but he just shows up and starts killing. And he fucking kills everything in sight. I'm not one for 'edgy' takes on characters, but they really didn't hold much back with the violence. It's almost adolescent in nature. I can imagine all the teenagers are going to be impressed by the carnage, but to me it totally screams Late 80's Comics.

Thankfully, they didn't focus on the Reign of Superman aftermath (not literally, at least) but they did have Luthor's plot to clone Superman. This is where it gets really over-the-top homosexual in nature. The scene that wadew1 refers to is absolutely hilarious. Luthor is shirtless, beating on Clone Superman, when he straddles him and screams "Who's your daddy?!"

The best part, at least from a comedy standpoint, is when the Clone goes all evil. It's a bit like the Dark Peter sequence from SM3, but without the dancing. It features probably the darkest sequence I have seen in modern animation that is meant for children. SPOILERS: After Toyman has murdered a toddler, Clone Superman takes him from police custody, flies him to the top of the city, and lets him fall to his death by slamming into a police car. The next shot has most of his body covered in a bloody tarp.END SPOILER

The fights were pretty well done, but this still felt like something else entirely from what came before it.

Doomsday is a brilliant concept...the central conceit of the character is that Superman CAN'T beat him, not physically. It takes the one superhero in the D.C. universe who can pretty much muscle through any situation and makes him vulnerable. Once you make Superman vulnerable, you can start exploring WHY he's a hero. The ultimate question is "What sets him apart beyond the fact that he was born lucky?". Only once you place him in a crucible, once you put him in a situation where most of us would cut and run, can you answer that question.

The cheek bones indeed look fucking awful. You'd think they would have learned when they tried to add shit to his face when JL started and changed in back in following seasons.
Okay, this movie might be shit, and I hope I'm not going off topic here, but why must people be compelled to voice the eight billionth opposition to the Doomsday idea? This is an animated DTV offering, where the character probably appears for a short time, smashes stuff and then vanishes- how much more Doomsday do we need? Yeah, there's nothing to the character, but it's not like Venom, where the fans are generally gaga over him and he appears in every intercompany title each month. I love the idea of Doomsday being the villain for a DTV animated Superman movie, regardless of quality.

Question for those who have seen it- do they have all four characters from Reign of the Supermen? Screw the haters, I thought that was a fun series.

That's a no-go, KABONG. Luthor merely clones Superman a mere 4 minutes after Supes has a funeral. It's pretty funny, because I thought they had a great opportunity to go into 'a world without a Superman' but it's like he was only gone for half of a day.

I had no problem with Doomsday in this DTV offering. I'm glad he didn't talk, and I wish they never even tried to give him an origin. The one thing I did like from the comics that I wished crossed over was that he broke out in a green chem suit with a face mask and they eventually revealed him throughout the suit getting torn up.

Superman: Doomsday was a DTV with great action, a Humongeous Clash Of The Titans Superman and Doomsday, tons of collateral damage, plus a Superman that is not invincible against the interstellar terminator Doomsday.

Does it have a plot...Not really. There is a touching moment between Lois and Mrs Kent after Kal El's alleged death. It doesn't need a plot...Just Super fights, flights of derring do, and a physical but rare silent monster in that DD is not voiced by either Ron Perlman or Lon Chany.

It just wasn't epic enough. Would have loved a build-up to the final fight with superheroes trying to stop Doomsday as he rampages across the country culminating in his showdown with Supes in Metropolis. I don't think it would have been much trouble to add some of that into the feature honestly. In the movie, it just seems like Doomsday was found in the 'burbs and walked to Metropolis. Would have been nice if the suit were still there and he fought some of the fight with one arm tied behind his back.

The fight itself was excellently staged where it really made you believe that Superman was getting his ass beat bad. It was like that scene was lifted from a much better Superman/Doomsday movie. Did I imagine it, or did Lex actually ask Superclone, "Who's your daddy?". GAY.

I think how you judge this movie has everything to do with how much baggage you carry in from the comic book. Pretending the comic didn't exist at all, I could see myself really digging this movie and the rather dark places this movie goes. The writing was pretty good, the characters were given some new things to do, and we get a few good action scenes. Unfortunately, they based it on a far more interesting, far more epic comic book storyline and tried to get it down to 77 minutes. Losing proposition from the start. Hopefully, they'll treat the Bane/Batman arc with more respect if they ever decide to conquer that classic series.

The Actual Superman/Doomsday fight was pretty good.
Nothing else is really worth mentioning. Sleazy tabloid Jimmy stuff might have been interesting, but they don't really do anything with it. Also, none of the new voice actors are better than the old ones.

It would have been nice if the movie focused on Steel, Superboy, Cyborg and Eradicator. We've already seen plenty of Superman in the DC animated universe. Plus, I thought the 'Reign of the Supermen' part of the story was the best thing about the whole event.

At least THE BATMAN brought in the right voices for the premiere with Superman. Clancy Brown as Lex. Dana Delany as Lois. And George Newbern who did Supes voice in Justice League as Superman.

Adam Baldwin was really, really weak. I woulda thought they'd try Brandon Routh.

The two fights are great. Dark Superman is great. Anne Heche's Lois is, surprisingly great. Just about every scene involving Martha Kent is great.

The rest, not so much, for all of the reasons stated above. And that saddens me.

Not as much as wondering why Shirley Walker wasn't doing the music only to go "....oh yeah.", but still pretty sad.

Thank Christ for On Demand.

Too bad the series didn't actually do any of that. You make it sound almost worthwhile.

I wiki'ed Doomsday last night (before even knowing this thread existed, coincidentally) and by the time he was going back to Apokolips for the third time and Luthor cloning him my mind had farted itself out.

Good Christ, somebody tell DC Comics when to stop.
DC won't stop until Doomsday is as overexposed as another piece of shit from the 90's, Lobo.

I don't know if you all have checked out the bonus features, but it has a segment on the upcoming Justice League: The New Frontier animated movie that is based on the fantastic comic of the same name. It looks decent, and at least the story it's based on is solid enough to warrant sitting through it. Kyle MacLachlan will be voicing the Silver Age Superman.

It was one of the very worst comics storylines I have ever read in my life. It was too long, had no plot, no character development, and for a story that was nothing but action, was unbelievably dull. It's bad enough that they decided to kill Superman and didn't give the contract to Lex Luthor, but giving it to a character (and I use the term loosely) with no motivation and no background was icing on the cake. It was a very long exercise in pointlessness, and a triumph of monetary fan-milking over content, especially considering that anybody with more than two brain cells to rub together knew that they weren't really killing Superman.

But hey, I'm glad it worked for you. I recommend Spongebob. Some of it may go over your head, but it's worth the climb.
