Your Favourite Dog Movies

I was really disappointed to see how Jodie Foster's latest movie The Brave One wasted the dog. So this is my list of dogs done right.

SPOILERS to follow, in case you haven't seen these movies (by the way, the Spoiler in most dog movies? THE DOG GETS IT)

1. Bad Moon- German Shepherds are great for movies, being highly trainable/photogenic as hell, and Thor from Bad Moon is as handsome and charismatic as the breed gets. unfortunately for the werewolf though, Thor is NOT a Streets of Fire fan. This is the ultimate movie for people who get that unique rush whenever a movie dog becomes badass action hero (see also Beast from The Hills Have Eyes who was very much the Charles Bronson of Shepherds, and Nanook from The Lost Boys, played by Cody the Malamute, who would later go on to star with acting peers Bart the Bear and Steven Seagal in On Deadly Ground)

2. My Dog Skip- the absolute king of sad dog endings (just to twist the knife that tiny bit more the fuckers give Skip arthritis)

3. The Call of the Wild- Rutger Hauer version. a story about a dog and his destiny, one of many filmed versions of the Jack London book. story itself is classic, and I like this particular version best because it has a Leonberger as the star (instead of taking the easy route and using a more common breed). also because it has Rutger Hauer.

4. Cujo- great tense stuff, and a genius move on King's part, turning an iconic life saver like the St Bernard into the iconic rabid killer Cujo. best dog as baddie film ever.

5. Shiloh and Shiloh 2- I count these movies as one, because you really need to see part 2 as soon as you've seen part 1. Ostensibly kids movies, but with some great acting courtesy of Scott Wilson. best scene is at the end of Shiloh 2, when Wilson's character breaks down and Shiloh just raises his little paw to touch him and forgive him. always messes me up.

6. White Dog- Raw Sam Fuller goodness. the only thing more tragic than this movie lacking a proper release is the fact that the Dog Whisperer wasn't around to help Winfield.

7. The Sandlot- I love how this movie builds James Earl Jones' mastiff up to be some huge scary monster... and then they actually meet the dog.

8. Turner and Hooch- a showcase for the gorgeous Dogue de Bordeaux (aka French Mastiff, also seen in Payback). I know there are few things funnier than Tom Hanks shouting or otherwise raising his voice but when Hooch dies, man... second best sad dog ending ever (or rather sad dog ending followed by uplifting his-spirit-lives-on-in-the-litter ending)

9. White Fang- starring Jed from Carpenter's The Thing and some truly gorgeous scenery. another great Jack London adaption.

10. Old Yeller- because there's no screwing with the classics.

Your faves, please?

There's this movie called WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS, where a ragtag boy gets 2 dogs, and has adventures with them. Then one dies somehow and... and this really broke me up into millions of tiny weeping shreds... the other dog can't take it, and starts moping around, and refuses to eat, and then it too dies.

He buries the two dogs side-by-side... and, touchingly, a RED FERN grows between their burial mounds!

This movie was actually sadistic. Who makes stuff like this to show to kids?

HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY: I know the movie added that dopey voiceover, but for me it worked. It's just so damn likeable. And Michael J. Fox is a fine voice actor.

THE ADVENTURES OF MILO AND OTIS: Cute little pug and kitty cat, but what makes it is Dudley Moore's narration, which could have been cutesy and maudlin but was warm and engaging. Lots of fun.

Yeah, so those are my picks. So what, you wanna fight about it?

I was about to say those exact movies. Both are awesome.

I wept during My Dog Skip, like a little girl with a skinned knee. Snoopy Come Home, too. I'm surprised nobody's asked me to turn in my penis.

I haven't seen it yet, but I know people love the crap out of Eight Below.

How 'bout some Disney love? Lady and the Tramp? 101 Dalmations?

All Dogs go to huey lewis... I mean heaven.

A while back, a satellite TV station was playing a loop of upcoming movie trailers over and over, one of which was EIGHT BELOW. For the next few days I periodically flipped over to that channel, my timing perfected, specifically to watch the EIGHT BELOW trailer, specifically to see the scene where the noble dogs look sadly on as the plane abandons them in Antarctica, specifically to feel that pang of sorrow in my heart that reminds me... I'm alive.

I suppose A Boy & His Dog is not what you're looking for here.

The end is definitely one of the most heartbreaking moments in an animated series.

My Life As A Dog - I can relate to this story; I still have problems with bottles.

Yeah, I know they're wolves, not dogs, but...
I was a fan of Journey of Natty Gan and Never Cry Wolf as a kid.

Benji The Hunted had some beautiful scenery and wildlife footage.

Old Yeller always hit me extra hard, because the boy (played by Tommy Kirk) had the same 1st name as me.

I always preferred the original Incredible Journey (that played more like the Disney True Life Adventures) than the remakes.

Lady & the Tramp, T & H, and 8 Below are some great choices as well.

My favorites though have got to be Disney's THE UGLY DACHSHUND with Suzanne Pleshette and Dean Jones (villain in Beethoven) and THE FOX & THE HOUND!

EDIT= Bonus trivia question:

Q: What actor did the voice-over work for 2 different main character dogs in 2 unrelated live-action movies?
A: (highlight) Chevy Chase in Oh Heavenly Dog & Karate Dog

*Also wanted to note that popular dog flicks almost always bring a boom in interest to that breed. See: 101 Dalmations, The Mask (Jack Russell), MIB (pug), etc.

** Not dog movies, but I always liked how in Rocky & Rocky Balboa (true underdog stories), the dogs were used as a symbol of Rocky's demeanor and situation. And making him a sympathetic "dog person" (animal lover) always made him more of a sympathetic character.

*** Definitely not dog movie, but John Carpenter's The THING is perfectly horrifying, partly because of those dog scenes and the way audiences generally feel about "Man's Best Friend".

**** No love for Man's Best Friend (Lance Henricksen), The Watchers, Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell, or Zoltan: the Hound of Dracula?
