Couchsurfing

Thread Starter
With several days of downtime between classes each week, a few friends and I are looking to travel across Europe. In the interest of keeping costs down, the idea of couchsurfing has been tossed around, and I'm curious if anyone else has done it or knows of someone who did? I'm not entirely sold on the idea (I've seen too many horror movies), but I'm not going to force everyone else to pay extra on account of me being a puss. Any and all feedback is welcome (including other suggestions on keeping costs down.)

Pray the site isn't hooked up to a Hostel-like rating system. You may be the next contestant...

I never heard of that before, but it sounds sketchy as hell. Traveling can be done on the cheap in Europe. Book flights far enough in advance and you can get tickets from Ryanair for around $50. Hostels are pretty cheap as well. Some of them may be dirty, but I would feel safer at a hostel than some random weirdos' couch. Let me know what cities you want to visit and I can try and track down where I stayed a couple years back.

If you watched less horror and more porn, you would think this is an awesome idea, and then be only slightly surprised at all the creepy gay sex you'll be confronted with. Worst case scenario, you're giving out a lot of handjobs to people you'll never see again. It's only gay if you see them again.

Do hostels instead.

I'm going to Europe next summer with some friends and we're doing hostels and probably one hotel. The idea of sleeping in a random European citizen's home does not entice me. Unless they're very hot females. In which case I'd fall right into the trap the Hostel proposed. But it'd be like totally worth it.

Next time I visit GB again. I will stay only in B&Bs. I talked to some more savvy travelers and some locals in the small towns I visited last year and the majority of them said the B&Bs were usually cheaper than Hotels and you almost always have a better chance of meeting more of the local folks.

I've hosteled all over Europe. All were quite nice. I only had to stay in a hotel in places where the hostels were full, far from city center or closed for off-season (Siena, Palermo, Riomaggiore, Montpilier, and one night in Lisbon). Do a little homework as some hostels can be dodgy. You will get good advice on what to do as the workers at the hostel tend to be locals or ex-pats and you will meet lots of fun fellow travelers from all over the world. I now have places to crash from Edinburgh to Hamburg, from Budapest to Melbourne and Perth, even all the way to Osaka.

Another option is look into short term apartment rentals. If you have enough friends pitching in that can be as cheap as a hostel.

I actually read about this in the New York Times the other day. It sounds really awesome and like it could be quite an adventure. Seems like everyone they interviewed for the article had great things to talk about with the program.

Well, if you're locked up in some Dutch man's basement you can't really voice your negative comments.
