Bloodied 70-year-old woman cuffed for having a brown lawn

OREM, Utah (AP) -- A 70-year-old woman arrested in a dispute over her brown lawn pleaded not guilty Tuesday, then stood by as a Los Angeles lawyer waved handcuffs for the cameras outside court.

Betty Perry, left, sits with attorney Gloria Allred in Utah's Fourth District Court on Tuesday in Orem, Utah.

Betty Perry is charged with resisting arrest and failing to maintain her landscaping, both misdemeanors.

She was arrested July 6 after failing to give her name to a police officer who visited her home.

During a struggle, Perry fell and injured her nose. She spent more than an hour in a holding cell before police released her.

"I ask the citizens of Orem: How many of you would like to have your great-grandmother taken from her home with bruises and blood and placed in handcuffs for failing to water her lawn?" attorney Gloria Allred said.

"Let's bring sanity back to law enforcement," she said.

The mayor and City Council apologized, and the police department said the situation could have been handled differently. But the city attorney still is pressing charges, and Perry is due back in court next month.

A state investigation found that Officer James Flygare acted properly in arresting Perry after trying to get her to cooperate.

Perry's water had been turned off for about nine months, at her request, although she was living at the house at the time of the arrest. Orem has a shutoff policy for people who are away for extended periods.
Jesus Christ, thank God I don't live in Utah. Pretty much half of my neighbourhood would be in jail by now.

Wasn't already covered that Utah deeply sucked ass?

And this is lawn racism.

I think I just heard about some guy in Philly claiming that brown lawns get criticized more than other lawns.

This is funny in a state where we have suffered through several years of drought. The state is always running ads telling people to conserve by not watering their lawns so much. But Orem is one of the more militant cities in the state. I could see the Orem City Council passing this type of ordinance. In fact, I could see them passing an ordinance that makes it a Class C misdemeanor to not have a smile on your face at all times.

If this was the case in Indiana I would be sharing a cell with my neighbors. It hasn't rained here in a long while.

Mormons hate old people.

Just lay astroturf. I know someone who did that in their backyard and it looks great. All you gotta do it pull any weeds that will occasionally grow through.

Don't we have a resident old man with lawn issues? Clearly he needs to comment on this.

This just in: De la Soul has been taken into custody for, quote, "that potholes in my lawn". More as it develops.

Happy to do it. Just so you know, the weirdness factor isn't exclusive to Northern Utah cities like Orem. In Southern Utah, we play host to a polygamous enclave, a city that has "banned the UN", and a town that passed an ordinance that every household must own a gun. Of course, High School Musical 2 was filmed here, so it's not all bad.

I'm not exactly a "Ban All Guns!" kind of guy, but that is just glorious in its insanity. I actually want to visit.

The town is Virgin, Utah. The town that banned the UN is LaVerkin, a scant 5 miles away. In fact, if you want to visit Zion National Park, you'll get to drive through both towns on the way. Like Kirsten Dunst, we like to mix our beautiful with a little crazy.

Bah, too much work. Just concrete the entire area. Check mate, environment!

Isn't grass supposed to turn yellow in the summer? Or am I missing something?

And banning the UN is awesome.

It's Law enforcement guys, there's no 'N'. Also your grape prevention seminars are killing the wine industry. The dairy industry is also suffering thanks to new sanctions on ice-cream trucks stating that just ice must be served.

And so on and so forth.

Yeah, I drove through there back in May on the way to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and I very distinctly remember Virgin, for generally being creepy as shit. I wonder if we took any pictures of that place.
