SIX Egyptian men died one after another as they descended into a rural septic tank in a failed attempt to rescue a 17-year-old who had entered the tank to fix a drainage problem, security sources and a family member said.

The youth, Ayman Mohamed Gumaa, also died yesterday after he succumbed to fumes and fell into sludge at the bottom of the tank in the village of Rifa near the southern city of Assiut, the sources said. Gumaa's mother, Zeinab Mohamed Ali, said she had sent her son into the tank because water was backing up into the family home, but panicked when he didn't return.

"I called out, Ayman, Ayman, Ayman, but he didn't respond. So I called for his uncle," she said at a municipal hospital where the bodies were taken after the incident. Security sources said that Gumaa's 45-year-old uncle entered the tank to try to save him, but also succumbed to the fumes.

A neighbour, his brother, another neighbour and his two brothers all proceeded to enter the tank to rescue others in the group. But they all died after exposure to noxious gases in the tank, a health official said.

"They couldn't bear the fumes and they suffocated and died," Ms Ali said. Security sources said civil defence forces later retrieved all seven bodies. They said it was not immediately clear if the men died from exposure to noxious gases in the tank or drowned after possibly losing consciousness.
Well, at least they tried.

Is the nobility of sacraficing your own life in attempt to save another mitigated by the whole ordeal taking place in a tank full of shit and, furthermore, the fumes of said shit causing the death?

No. At least I don't think so.

There was an almost identical incident reported by the Darwin Awards on an American farm a few years ago. Nice to know that rural morons exist everywhere, and in all skin colors. We really do have more in common than not. Most of us are stupid.

I wonder if the mother was just calling guys she didn't like too much and sending them down the well to "help".
Imagine what the fumes down there must be like now, with the septic tank and six or seven dead guys.

Didn't this happen in Mom and Dad Save the World...

Oh and the kid's dead right? You'd think they'd at least mention if their efforts were in vain or not.
And the kid died, too? That's a slap in the face. After all that shit (literally), you'd hope they would have at least rescued him.

Here's the question: if your young nephew was theoretically dying in a shithole, would you say "fuck it, he's a goner, I'm not going in there, I love him but not that much" and then walk away?

Depends. Did I just watch four people attempt the same thing, succumb to the fumes, and die? If so, then jumping into a fetid, shit-filled septic tank that contains no oxygen with which to continue life-sustaining metabolic processes ain't my idea of courage. It's more like... suicide.

Yeah but hindsights 20/20. Sucks for the family that's for sure. They'll feel guilty every time they take a dump.

It's not hindsight! Maybe the first, or even, second rescue attempt was a justifiable risk. But how about the fifth person?

If at first you don't succeed, die, die again.

How soon did those people go in after them though? Either way it still sucks for them.

21-Flush Salute for those lost.
The fifth person was already suicidal. The sixth person became suicidal due to the deaths of the other men.

I just re-enacted this daring scene with my poops. It was tragic.

See, if you had just put a blocker right before the slope (and another at the edge of the screen so they don't fall into oblivion), your builder would have time to get the bridge up, and you'd only have to sacrifice TWO lemmings to beat the level.

....

What? I used to play that game for hours.
