What would you guys recommend adding? What classic/cult/cheesy horror movie, slasher flick, or creature feature can I not go without?

Nice list so far!

Where is American WW in London??? Freaked, The Gate, House 1 & 2, Phantasm series, Monster Squad, and "Critters" better imply atleast Part2 as well, and personally, I like Howling 1-6 (with 4 the least and don't bother with 7 at all).

and more when they come to me (or when I get home and look at my collection).

Note: Some of those on your list might be hard for you to find without hunting as they're not available on DVD yet.

EDIT: Glad to see some of my more obscure favorites make the list like Rawhead Rex, Terrorvision, Crater Lake Monster, Boggy Creek, and Creepozoids, etc.

Well, this is quite the list. And I'm not sure you really need to see every Romero movie. The same goes for Argento. Just focus on the classic stuff.

It's good to see that you have Ghoulies, but I think that Ghoulies 2 is really the high point of that series (though Ghoulies 3 does send them to college, where they're "out of the bowl and totally out of control!") By the way, does anyone know what's up with Ghoulies 4? It seems to have been made recently. I saw it at Best Buy, and the Ghoulies were just little people in costumes. Not acceptable at all. Is nothing sacred anymore?

In terms of movies not on the list, the only one that really comes to mind right now is Night of the Comet, which I think is a ton of fun. It's similar to Planet Terror in a lot of ways, if in the middle of the movie El Wray decided to go to a shopping mall and try on some clothes.

Also, I look forward to the release of your film, in fall 2038, which is approximately how long it'll take you to watch all these movies.

Troll! 1 AND... 2 (Patrick Rippoll would be proud). Frankenhooker! Island of Dr. Moreau for the Stan Winston "Manimals". Ridley Scott's Legend. The Dark Crystal.

Someone's bound to mention SOCIETY, but you can fast forward to the end.

Lots of other great ideas in here: Practical make-up and effects at their finest
Especially MY POST

And here: Favorite Monster Movies - the good, the bad, the cheesy

Henenlotter's Brain Damage, and since Darkmite already mentioned Frankenhooker, might as well watch Basket Case 2 & 3, finish out Henenlotter's filmography. Oh and Dog Soldiers.
You already have a hell of a list going. I'd also have to reccomend that you track down a copy of Schoolgirls in Chains, one of the best TCM rip-offs ever. Lot of inventive stuff in that film, including an utterly bizarre soundtrack that resembles Tom Waits directing a Greek chorus (lot of weird percussion, guitar strings and people shouting "RUN. RUN. RUN.") and a scene of a man and his wife discussing the recent disappearances shot entirely outside the house, peeking through the curtains (a shot that opens with the hand-held camera hobbling over from the yard to the window). As far as I can remember, the voyeur's identity is never given and serves no narrative purpose.

It's a really grimy movie and one of my favorites. Oddly enough, there's an homage to it in The Waterboy.

If you're going for an homage, try to track down really low-budget stuff like that.

Also, you really really need to see the Manitou. It's body-horror meets Native-American horror meets Midget-Horror. Great great stuff.

Edit: Forget it, doesn't meet the criteria.

Carnosaur!

The newer monster flicks I really dug that still maintained a "classic" (mostly goopy practical effects= latex & syrup) vibe: Abominable, The Descent, Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers, Feast, Altered, Roost...

I'm a fan of the 2 "direct to HBO" monster flicks from back in the day: Full Eclipse and Split Second.

In addition to the Manitou, what about Q: the Winged Serpent and Prophecy (killer mutant bear)?

No 80's vamp flicks like Lost Boys, Fright Night, or Near Dark?

Leprechaun?

EDIT: I just realized I was spouting out anything I liked that was creature-filled. Sorry, if it's not what you need specifically.

This thread title is a bit misleading, as your film's criteria isn't directly geared to films that horror fanatics would classify as "cult" horror films. You know, those films that used to travel solely by bootleg video because no one would distribute them legitimately. The Internet has changed that so most of them are available, but the classification remains.

Now most of these fit the criteria of a "cult" horror film. A few more:

Faces of Death Series
Traces of Death Series
August Underground & August Underground: Mordum
Men Behind the Sun
The Untold Story
The Ebola Syndrome

Alice, Sweet Alice...that movie still creeps the shit outta me and is very well made. The violence in it is much more brutal and unsettling than your usual slasher.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death...very moody and understated.

Black Christmas...Bob Clark's BEST yuletime flick (fuck that kid and his BB gun). Olivia Hussey is so hot and Keir Dullea is out of his mind. Plus, its got John Saxon and an awesome ending too.

Nightbreed...Clive Barker. Not for everyone but the creature effects are awesome and you get Cronenberg as a serial killer. I find it very entertaining.

Dead and Buried...really moody, cool flick that Dan O'Bannon wrote after Alien. The gore (especially the hypodermic needle in the eye) is rediculous.

Just Before Dawn...badass slasher flick that Gregg Henry (Mayor MacReady from Slither) is in. Rarely seen gem with a great twist ending.

Dressed to Kill...as close to an American giallo film we'll ever get. It's fucking DePalma man.

Maniac...such a weird fucking movie. Joe Spinell as a psycho killer and some of Savini's best makeup work (the exploding head!).

Who Can Kill a Child?...extremely grim Spanish film about killer children. This one takes no prisoners.

Is Salo really best described as a horror?

It's certainly debatable. Much like the "Ilsa She-Wolf of the SS" and "Men Behind the Sun", it contains enough horrorfic elements to where it qualifies without being implicitly a horror film. "Last House on the Left" and "Cannibal Hollocaust" really fall into the same arena, but for some reason never get questioned

It's banning from several countries for decades based on it's content is why it gets as a cult horror film nod from me.

I think it's partly a question of marketing, and the director's other work. It's not as if any of Pasolini's other films could really fit into the genre, to my knowledge.
Bob Clark made "A Christmas Story", "Porky's" and "Baby Geniuses". I don't think the director's other works is a qualification on an individual film being a horror film or not.

Maybe, but Pasolini actually had a reputation as a fairly major arthouse director.
I really think that would have changed perceptions of the film.

I still definitely think of it as an art house film. It just contains enough disturbing imagery, overshadowed in my opinion by the even more disturbing original De Sade dialogue, to be considered horrific as well as it's larger statements regarding Italian facism during WW2.

I wouldn't call this horror film directly, but on my list of the top 10 shocking/disturbing/grusome films, it fits the bill quite nicely.

Could you list those? I'm curious as to what's on it.

My list above is just about it. "Men Behind the Sun" and "Salò" rank as the two films that still sort of haunt me after viewing. Their premises and content are terrible enough that I almost feel I'm not a complete sociopath because of them. Also, "The Untold Story", despite it's Asian comedic/horror bent, has some truly disturbing child murdering that tends to affect anyone with kids.

After that, it's just varying degrees of splatter/snuff films that I more find amusing than actually shocking/horrific. "The Ebola Syndrome" is another splatterific outing from the creator of "The Untold Story". The Guinea Pig series has some truly twisted entries that mostly tend to be rather comedic. The only thing missing up there would possibly be Japanese auteur Kazuo 'Gaira' Komizu monster/snuff/splatter/soft-core porn "Entrails of a Virgin" and "Entrails of a Beautiful Woman" and everybody's favorite Peter Jackson comedy, BrainDead (Dead Alive).

That's a big hionkin' list, Stormin.
I need more info. Are you looking for horror films that reflect their era? Films that immediately invoke the 70's, 80's, etc.?
Or are you looking for the kind of cult film that transcends era?
For example, the Evil Dead series hardly exemplifies the 80's. They were cult hits during their time, but that was because they DIDN'T look like everything else being made. Something like Killer Klowns, well that carries much more of an 80's sensibilty.
Deadly Spawn, Night of the Demons, Creepshow... for more of that 80's vibe.

DITTO on Nightbreed.

It's always nice to find other people who've even seen The Deadly Spawn.

Thanks for all the contributions, guys, this is great! I'd say I'm looking for both categories, BobClark. I would definitely love to sample some of the more exquisite, immediately-placeable bits of that unique 80s cheese, and yet at the same time those transcendent classics (whether heralded or not) are just as important to me.

In other words, (flings arms out dramatically) I WANT IT ALL! (Laughs manically)
