In LA Oct. 6 - 13

Well hello there all you LA Chewers. I will be visiting LA during the above referenced week and need a little advice on some ways to pass the time. I'll be staying with my brother, who lives a few blocks from the Arclight and all the "touristy" stuff. He works for a producer, Alex Rose (Overboard), and during the week he'll be busy tending to her needs a good 70% of the time I'm there, which means I'll have to fend for myself.

Anyway, would anyone be so kind as to give me some suggestions on what to check out, and when to check it out? We're going to a Dredg show at the Troubador the evening of October 7, but other than that, and perhaps a trip to San Diego at another point, we (well I, mostly) don't have anything planned. I've tried to talk to my bro about what I can do, but all he mentions is the Arclight. I 'll definitely be attending a show or two there (The Ass of JJ, if it hasn't opened wide by that week), but I'd like to get the advice of some other LA dwellers. I've been to LA exactly one time in my life, and that was with the parental unit for one day. This time it's for a week, with no restraints.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance, and take care all.

What kind of things do you like to do while visiting cities?

There are museums: The Getty and MOCA are cool if you are into that kind of thing.

There's the beach - though if you're going to San Diego, don't even bother with a gross, crowded, littered LA beach. Try Encinitas, La Jolla, Torrey Pines or Pacific/Mission Beach in SD. If you are interested in doing something physical, try renting a surfboard. I always get my visiting friends to do that in SD and they always have a blast. You'll need a wetsuit. It's getting cold. Venice beach is kind of creepy and weird, but a fun people watching experience.

There are all kinds of Indie films and Indie bands to see.

Check out the LA Cuisine thread for places to eat.

I take my more nerdy friends on tours of post production VFX and animation houses(your brother could help with that?), or on the 'Blade Runner' tour as I call it through downtown LA.

Unfortunately in LA, you'll spend a lot of time driving to get anywhere.

There are several really great revival houses in the area. Check out their October schedules:

The Egyptian
The Aero
The New Beverly

I also recommend the Watts Tower. It's a fascinating monument, and probably the best the city has to offer for your tourist trap dollar.

Get some thai food. Thai Town is right down the street from that area. Here's a recent L.A. Times article with some good suggestions. You might also head to Chinatown for a dim sum brunch at ABC Seafood or Emperess Pavillion, or a french dip from Phillipes.

In Silverlake, drinks at the Tiki Ti, dinner at La Parilla or Cuban sandwiches at El Cochinito, coffee at Intelligentsia, ice cream at Pazzo Gelato, and maybe a movie at The Vista, depending on what's playing--it's a very nice theater.

Thanks both of you for your generous replies. I will be looking into those things before I head out there. There's a slight chance I will be able to get some time in on the set of CSI: New York (my uncle has a friend whose daughter's husband is an assistant direcot) one of the days, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that.
