Family Guy Season 7

The Peoples court theme song had me laughing something fierce and Dr. Who being in hyperspace was good...otherwise this was pretty crap.

I want Herbert dead...I want the guy that keeps saying..."hey let's put Herbert in this scene" dead...

Which Dr. Who did they used?
I had to do a Google search to find out who Herbet is. You're right, he's terrible and always has been. Still, the show as been terrible ever since it came back so, I don't really care.

The most famous one, Davies I believe? I always forget the actor's name. Aside from the Doctor Who scene, I really thought the whole thing sucked. It was like watching a Simpsons episode.

So it looked kind of like this?

I agree that it was incredibly lame. HOWEVER, there is something hilarious to me about Han and Chewie finding a "perfectly good couch" in the garbage pit and taking it with them.
Most of it fell kind of flat, but the Porkins bit killed me. You can never make too much fun of Porkins.

PETA would probably have a problem with trying to kill manatee.
A lot of the jokes felt forced. Phantom Menace? Yeah, cause constant name drops are hilarious.

It did make me remember why Star Wars is so awesome though.
I got a few good laughs out of it. The Peoples' Court and Dr. Who bits were my favorites, as well.

Yes.

The end with Peter dissing Robot Chicken to Chris was the only funny part.
I agree.

Porkins was the only laugh out loud moment I had.

EDIT: Oh wait, when the Falcon was being pulled in to the Death Star and the one Imperial guy tried to put his arm around the other guy. That made me laugh as well.
I thought it was funny, but after the shitty Simpsons episode, pretty much anything would have been a step up.

"Well, stay here and rot, you stuck-up bitch," the dig at Danny Elfman, "Congratulations, kid, but don't get penisy," and the Yavin scout making "Pew Pew" noises got the biggest laughs out of me, but there was plenty of good stuff to go around.
I laughed a few times. The Porkins and the Redd Foxx bits got me, but too many of the jokes fell completely flat. And Herbert does need to go away FOR A LONG TIME.
Good episode. Could have great, but the show needs to remove its head from its ass. Way too many self references, Herbert is ruining molester humor and two Airplane references is amateur night.
The actual Baker Dr. Who opening playing in hyperspace just killed me. The "Time of My Life" number was pretty forced (no pun intended) -- in fact, everything with Obi Wan fell kind of flat for me, and they really under-used the Stewie-as-Vader bit. It was funny, but there were stretches where it was just Star Wars with Family Guy-style animation, no attempt at a joke at all.
I thought this was way better than the Robot Chicken Star wars parody (the Admiral Ackbar bit excepted of course). The meeting with Vader where they discuss the Death Star's weakness was pretty sweet. That and the hyperspace bit.

But yeah, this episode benefited from the Simpson's season premier being shit. That and I barely paid attention to it since I was looking for porn.
If the promos were showing most of the "good" bits then I'm glad I skipped this one.
"Simply Red standing by" got a good laugh out of me. Other than that, I was kinda disappointed that they had such free reign over a classic movie for an hour and all they really did was a Cliffs Notes version with a few ha-has thrown in.
Was the Star Wars episode played somewhere else before last night? I remember people I work with talking about the couch bit back in July sometime.

I pretty much agree with everyone here, the episode wasn't that great. They could have done a lot more with it. It just seems like they rehashed things that had been funny in previous episodes and changed them slightly to fit into the Star Wars theme.
I think there were some clips shown at the Celebration earlier this year that showed up online.
There were, I saw some of them last night (My tv is not hooked up). It was okay, but you're right about the overuse of Herbert. We get it already, he gets a hard on for Chris. That point has been driven home for the past seven years now.
I got a decent bit of laughs at the first 30 minutes, and then it tailed off a bit until the attack on the Death Star. I also thought looking at the mall map on the Death Star was kind of funny. "We parked on the Macy's side..."

And the argument about Robot Chicken was funny. I wish there would have been a bit more Stewie Vader and less Herbert. I think having Joe as Obi Wan might have been funnier, since Joe wasn't in it at all (was he?).

Did anyone else spot the coach from Home Movies sitting in the cantina?
The coach and Bender were both in there.
Damn, I missed Bender.
They were sitting in adjacent booths, if my memory is correct.
It was worth the hour just for the John Williams/Danny Elfman bits.

Everything he said. That and the John Williams/Danny Elfman bits were the only ones that made me chuckle. Notice I didn't say "laugh out loud," which Family Guy hasn't made me do in...awhile.

They really need to get off their asses when it comes to writing b/c I'm sick and fucking tired of Herbert, Stewie's a closet homo-sexual, Meg-bashing and liberal bullshit (i.e. anyone remotely indepedent and/or conservative gets ridiculed with liberals getting a free-pass!)

Disagree in about every way possible. Robot Chicken's effort had half the time and was easily twice as good.

and the arguement scene would have been so much better if Green had broken carachter and they showed a fake promo for the next episode with someone completly different doing Chris's voice.
One big reason Robot Chicken's parody was better:

Abe Lincoln kickin' ass.

Need I say more?

I laughed at "Leia's getting larger!" but that was about it.
I just remembered that terrible Magic Johnson bit from last night. I'd like to point out how unfunny it was.

And the Bush/Cheney bumper sticker made me roll my eyes. Enough already, Seth. We get it.
What's wrong with bashing Meg? Is she some sort of beloved character?
Yeah, I feel guilty for watching and laughing. That being said, best moments:

- Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on the Star Destroyer (yeah, Spaceballs did it already, but it's still a nice update to the joke).

- Jawas and Grey Poupon was sublime.

- Adam West as Grand Moff Tarkin.

- "Great. Now we have to do the rest of this thing with Danny Elfman."

- Imperial March elevator music.

- The little Robot Chicken / Family Guy argument at the end.

But the show is still suffering from painful filler jokes that just refuse to end. When you have Jasper recreating a scene from Dirty Dancing, it's obvious that the writers were too lazy to keep the story moving and make new jokes. And let's face it: it's not like Family Guy is the most inventive comedy as it attempts to find the shortest path between a set-up and the punchline. I still laugh from time to time but other than Heroes, I can't think of a lazier show on television. And I know this isn't a new development, but ever since the show came back on the air, it seems to get worse every season.

It's just the brutality of it. I mean she went from a carachter that the others cared about pre-shitcanning. To one that is universaly(I know I spelled that wrong) hated in the re-birth.

It's not every season...it's every episode.

Not at all. It's simply become too much of a "go-to" when the writers are too fucking lazy to come up with something...new (i.e. Herbert!)

‘Family Guy’ Producers May Take Whack at ‘Empire Strikes Back’ Next

Sunday night’s one-hour “Star Wars” parody episode of Fox’s “Family Guy” was such a ratings success that producers are considering devoting an episode to “The Empire Strikes Back” next year.

The season premiere featured characters from “Family Guy” performing a compressed re-enactment of the 1977 film, using the original sound effects and John Williams’ musical score.

Posting a 5.5 preliminary rating among adults 18 to 49, the episode was the highest-rated “Family Guy” since the show returned to Fox in 2005 (full weekend ratings will be posted soon). A spokesman for 20th Century Fox Television said there’s no official announcement on a sequel, but doing “Empire” next year “seems likely.”

In an interview conducted before the episode aired, executive producer Chris Sheridan said the staff wants to do “Empire” if Sunday’s episode performed well. The parodies could give “Family Guy” an annual format-breaking event like “The Simpsons’” popular Halloween episodes.

But if you missed last night’s episode (titled “Blue Harvest”—the production code name of “Return of the Jedi”), future viewing opportunities are scarce. The day after airing, “Family Guy” episodes typically are available on Fox’s video player, or for purchase on Xbox 360 and other electronic retailers. For the time being, Fox is holding back “Blue Harvest” and has no current plans for an encore presentation. Fox also kept the episode off iTunes, where it uploaded premiere episodes for several other shows last week. (Note: A reader pointed out in the blog comments that Adult Swim airs "Family Guy" encores. According to the network's Web site, "Blue Harvest" is slated for Oct. 14 at 11 p.m.).

The parody was produced with the full cooperation of George Lucas. The unusual partnership between the envelope-pushing cartoon and the famously protective “Star Wars” creator was part corporate synergy, part creative respect.

“This is a relationship that’s built over time,” Sheridan says. “There are a lot of ‘Star Wars’ fans on staff. We do ‘Star Wars’ references on the show. Lucasfilm has been a fan.”

Parody doesn’t necessarily require the permission of a copyright owner. When “Family Guy” had the idea to do a full “Star Wars” parody, with some scenes matching shot-for-shot the original film, producers sought out Lucas for a couple of reasons. First, Fox distributes the “Star Wars” films, so there’s an existing relationship to protect. Second, “Family Guy” wanted access to the film’s original sound effects and music.

Then things got a little tricky. “Family Guy” writers wanted to retain the show’s wicked (and sometime lurid) sense of humor, without alienating Lucas.

“‘Family Guy’ is a pretty edgy show. There was some thought of [what Lucas might think] in the process, but we wanted to stay true to our show,” Sheridan says.

There were a few minor concessions, such as getting rid of some double-layered incest humor between Luke Skywalker (played in the show by the family’s teenage son) and his sister Princess Leia (played in the episode by Chris’ mom).

“There was a couple things that they wanted us to tone down, but we’re used to getting those kind of notes from Standards,” Sheridan says.

Now if they actually went with this I would have laughed more than once during this episode.
Man, I laughed more during Thumb Wars than I did during this, and that's saying something.
I saw most of it on youtube. I liked the Limbaugh bit and the fact it appears they got him to do the radio show.
The best stuff in the episode were the observational jabs at the movie itself. "What if they come in a different door?" or "That was your maneuver? Listing slightly to the left?", for example. Or when Luke gives Han shit for not believing in the Force, and Han replies, "Oh, you mean that thing you just found about three hours ago?" That stuff made me laugh. But yeah, typical Family Guy joke-shoehorning ruined most of it. I'm not surprised they're planning to do another one next year, since 90% of the runtime is copied straight from the movie, they only need to fill about five minutes' worth of jokes. It's like MadLibs for sitcoms.

Ok, the Robot from Rocky 4 was fucking awesome. The rest...crap...
The Herbert joke asside, gotta say I thought it was a decent episode...
I thought it was a bit flat. The banter with Chris and the store manager/owner made me laugh, because that was my life when I worked at different video stores. And the bit when Stewie told Brian he should have sex with the very next person he sees, then turns on the light and Brian slugs him.

Was watching Fox tonight when I saw a quick promo foir the 10 o'clock news and they said something about a tragedy hitting the cast of Family Guy and a character may be gone forever. Anyone know who they were referring to?

I too saw this during the episode, and they kept showing Lois, making me think Alex Borstein had died (which would be an odd way to rip off South Park), yet I looked all over the internet and couldn't find anything about such a thing.
The only news I can find about Family Guy has to do with a recent frivolous lawsuit against the When You Wish Upon A Weinstein episode from 2000. If that's what Fox's promo was about they should all get fucked up the ass by a Weinstein.

EDIT: Apparently Seth MacFarlane is saying he's going to kill off a character for the 100th episode. It'll probably be someone like Lois's father, but we can all hope it's Herbert the old pedophile.
