Reaper

For a show that looked like crap from the pilot presentation I saw on the YouTube, this is getting some phenomenal reviews. As in "best new show of the season" reviews.

But Ray Wise seems to have made an excellent Satan (his delivery of the line "That's cool, right?" consistently makes me chuckle), and so I'll check out the first episode tomorrow night at 8.

So it's worth my time? I'll check out this Brimstone wannabe just for Ray Wise. Who knows, I might like it.

Weird, because it looks god awful.

Yeah, I'll check out the pilot tomorrow night only b/c of the reviews.

I can't see Ray Wise playing anything but Ray Wise, so we'll see.
I'm not sure about this show. It just seems like it's coming way out of left field.

It also seems way too similar to some other (demon collecting/devil pulling the strings/comedy) TV shows that failed miserably after the first season.
Can't we just bring back Brimstone? I enjoyed the hell out of that show when it first aired. Maybe time hasn't been good to it, I don't know, but I like to think it holds up. I was always bummed he only got through like...13 of the demons or something like that.
I really think I'll like this, but Tyler Labine... well, he's not just someone that grows on you.

Ray Wise will never be as good as John glover was in that. Ever. He was charming enough to make you like the sight of him raping your mom and you would even cheer. And in the last episode, the reveal of one of the secondary character being a Sumerian warlock and thus being one of the big bad was neat as hell. And it's not even out on DVD....

Anyway, I'll try to judge this thing on his own, even if the plot is a carbon copy.

Isn't this show just a rip-off of DEAD LIKE ME?
I'm onboard for at least a few episodes to check it out.

Not at all.

Of the pilots I've seen, this and Journeyman are definitely my favorites. Reaper's got a great premise and with a bit more fine-tuning, the show could be a weekly must-see. And not to get off topic but I can already feel that Journeyman's going to get canceled because it's a good show but it won't be able to hold Heroes' audience of brilliant and discerning minds.
I really enjoyed the leaked pilot I saw. Pretty damn funny and Wise is a good devil. I think it would be better as a show before Supernatural on Thur. than on Tues. Get a lot of humor and some supernatural, then a little less humor and more...supernatural. I need to think that through a bit.
Yeah I saw the leaked pilot a while back and it wasn't bad although I think the girl has been replaced with the hot shape changing chick from heroes.
Liked it. Thought it nailed the balance between humor and action/adventure much better than Chuck.
The premise seems like a Supernatural rip off.
I really enjoyed this. The pilot was breezy and fun. Got to say though that while it might be some type of subconscious Kevin Smith bias, I did notice quite a few poorly framed shots throughout the episode.

If anything it's more of a comedic version of Brimestone. I thought it was good.

I was amused and will probably watch it again. It certainly is derivative, but the script was snappy enough that it didn't bother me much. I agree with whoever said it was better than Chuck...it felt the humor was much less forced in Reaper.
Ray Wise is an awesome Devil.
This is by far my favorite new show. At least of the ones that have already premiered. It's not the most original or brilliant thing on TV, but this is the exact tone and sense of humor I wish every genre show had. I'd even go as far to say that 80% of the jokes hit their mark. Plus, Twin Peaks is one of my top five favorite shows of all time so any way you can sneak Ray Wise into a show is a plus, especially if he plays The Devil as a twisted Obi-Wan. We'll see if it can stay funny and fresh.
I'm not a carjacker. I'm the Devil!

The glee with which he says that...Ray Wise was a VERY good choice. I watched the pilot again and it's still very watchable. I get the same vibe from this as I do from Chuck and that gives me warm fuzzies.
Ray Wise was indeed the shit. But what was he talking about with "God wins in the end"? That's kind of a defeatist attitude.

Hey, that didn't totally suck. Color me surprised. Ray Wise was awesome, but I'm going to need at least a few more episodes before I make up my mind about this one.

Also: Kevin Smith clearly learned how to direct television by watching Degrassi: The Next Generation. Man, was that flat-looking.
Just watched it again since I saw it a month or so ago and it was actually a bit better the second time around. Missy Peregrym is actually much better in the part than the last chick. Also recognized Jessica Alba's buddy from Dark Angel. Anyway it really hit all the humor bits well but just had enough darkness and emotion to make it work like when the zambony ran over the guy and left a huge blood trail or when he comes home to a crying mom offering her own soul up.
I dug the shit outta this; even go as far to say that this is Smith's best work as a director. Consider me hooked to this series...

You might be thinking of G vs. E. Now that is a show that needs to end up on dvd.

Unfortunately, I missed the episode but I'm hoping CW reruns it on Sunday. They seem to do that quite a bit with some of their shows.

Damn, I forgot this was on last night. Is it being re-run or available online?

My Tivo schedule has it repeating Thursday at 9 after Smallville.

Yeah. EST

I missed it last night because I was recording some other shows.
I was SO surprised and SO relieved at how decent this was. Ady and Matt M have it right, this does the comedy-action thing light years better than Chuck does. it knows what it's trying to be and it's passably written and it's on the freaking CW. I'll watch again.
Best new show I've seen so far, though, I haven't had a chance to catch Journeyman just yet.
After seeing numerous ads & commercials the show, to me, reeked of sucked based on what I had seen & read about. I watched the pilot last night expecting the show to suck and ended up really liking it instead. Maybe the CW isn't in as much trouble as I thought it would be after canning VM & some of their other popular shows.

That remains to be seen. I see Reaper lasting a full 22-24 episode season. Anything beyond that will be from word-of-mouth/reviews and a loyal and vocal fan-base.

From what I've heard, the ratings for the pilot weren't that hot (no pun intended!)
Really liked the first girl they had instead of the new one. I kept being distracted as to whether or not they re-filmed everything with her in it, or just scenes where she was actually in the frame with the two other guys.

That aside, this is one of the few pilots this season that has me wanting to see a couple more episodes before I make a judgment on it. Ray Wise is just so damn good....
That was funny as hell (pun intended). I'm surprised.
Eh, I don't know. Ray Wise is fine but everything else...perhaps it's my negative reaction anything centered around the wacky adventures of a shiftless slacker and his much nerdier slacker friend(s) - their working at a big box store being optional. Too many of the hot new shows this season that I've bothered to watch feature nothing in the way of interesting characters, and so goes Reaper.

Even for something with Kevin Smith's name in the credits it felt so listless, so dull, so flat. The only time there was some energy onscreen was, well, when Wise was on but that wasn't enough. Everyone else just seemed off, somehow.

What also didn't help was that, for me it had the cheap, flimsy feel of an awful, low budget produced-directly-for-first-run-syndcation TV series from the early to mid 90's. The sort that aired on your local stations at times like 4pm Saturdays or 1am Wednesdays and got cancelled after one season.
Not a fan. The stock wisecracking fat guy is annoying and the lead kid with Matthew Lillard's mouth isn't charming. The chick is sort of hot though.

Well, he is trying to fix that. The main character did talk about the "bounty hunting" as a step toward maturity.

And the part where he lied to his mom about the contract was actually pretty touching to me.

This thing is filmed in Canada. In a Canadian Tire to be exact. Been in one last week-end, and it confirms that the place is hell.

agreed, the chick is hot but I miss that skirt she wore on "Heroes".
I liked it alot. Personally I thought Sock was hilarious. Laughed like a baby when he threw the big can at his friends face.
What happened? The show this week was weak. It felt like all the characters had amnesia. The little comedy bits were ok, overall the story and continuing story was dead.
I only hope the retread was because it was the first episode after the pilot. Hopefully it'll actually go somewhere next week.
I'm having fun with this show. I don't think it needs to "go" anywhere. It's clearly built as a fun episodic and I think it's doing it well. From the toy car getting run over when it was supposed to save the day to the evil hybrid to "We're gonna die dressed as condoms!" I think the show is definitely worth watching.
Major continuity issues going on here. In the pilot, both of the main guy's parents know about the deal with the devil, and the mom becomes overcome with guilt over the whole ordeal. The main guy decides to tell her that it was only a one-time thing to put her at ease. Suddenly in this week's episode, she suspects the main guy is keeping something from her, and at the end of the episode, when he comes clean about being the devil's bounty hunter, she's totally cool with it. What?

Also, in the pilot, when the main guy (sorry, I really can't remember his name) asks the devil what would happen if he refused to work for the devil, the devil says he would kill his mom, yet in this week's episode, the main guy asks the same question to the devil again, and this time there's no mention of killing his mom.

Despite all that, I actually still do like the show.
Although it was a bit of a retread of the pilot, I still enjoyed this week's episode. Of course, we can already guess what will probably happen in the forthcoming shows...

1. God will get involved in one form or anther. What character-actor will portray the Almighty? How about Kurtwood Smith?
2. Sam will probably gain supernatural powers on his own without needing the "prop of the week"
3. Andi's "dead dad" will come into play.
4. The annoying whiney-ass little brother will eventually find out his parents' also sold his soul too; maybe they wanted tickets to see Huey Lewis & the News?

Regardless, I'm really liking this show...
Now this is how you do a fun monster-of-the-week type show. I really wish that shows like Smallville and Supernatural would take a page from this and realize that clever dialogue and engaging actors are more important than the monsters. I am interested to see if any sort of long running arc develops, but with episodes this good I don't really care just yet.

I think Supernatural realizes this probably better than any show on the CW (not saying much, but....). Smallville, however is a lost cause.

I'm still not sold on the show, the only thing that hits for me all the time is Wise, and I like the main much better on the Loop, but I'm probably in the minority on that one....
