Whilst having Co-Op support for the entire story and a more robust engine seems appealing, I have to wonder what Saints Row has to offer now that GTA IV seems to have fixed most of the issues Saints Row 'rectified'.

I enjoyed Saint's Row, but like you said, with GTAIV coming I wonder what need this will fill. GTAIV will have the urban, gritty feel down, and Crackdown is a great fix for the open ended action.

I do love that shot with all the police swarming the player though.

I found Saints' Row more enjoyable due to the following:

1. A non idiotic aiming system.
2. A non idiotic save game system.
3. A non idiotic mission system.
4. A non idiotic navigation system.

Of course, the game was also buggy beyond all belief, including disappearing cars and an unplayable multiplayer. Still, I'm excited about this announcement, particularly as I will not be playing GTAIV if they don't fix the aiming and save game systems (at least).

The aiming and save systems have been completely revamped for GTAIV, which is why I questioned what niche SR2 could fill. The GTAIV aiming is closer to Rainbow Six Vegas or Splinter Cell or even Saint's Row with over the shoulder aiming.

I don't really see how Saint's Row's mission system was much different from GTA's, but I really like GTAIV's decision to let the cell phone become the big prompt for missions and letting you start when you want.

The navigation in Saint's Row was the only thing that I felt detracted from the GTA formula actually. It felt like far too much hand holding, and didn't really promote exploration by the player. I always liked GTA letting the player find, or lose, the path to complete a mission.

I never played the missions in SR, I just blowed shiz up.

Sorry but I don't remember it at all being fun failing a mission in the GTA games because I got lost. In fact I fucking hated it, especially when the environments got bigger and bigger and I had to pull out that unreadable map from the game case.

Sure the Saint's Row map held your hand, but if you're in a city you don't know your way around, don't you think you'd appreciate having a GPS with you too ? It was handy and you didn't have to use it if you don't want to. I saw no detractable quality to it.

Exactly. Hell, if they want to make it part of gameplay, have some vehicles equipped with a "GPS" mapper, and some not.

I will wait and see about the save system. I will never play another game, of any type, with a save system as thoroughly broken as GTA's.

Yeah, there's nothing like having to haul ass across an entire state, just to save your game after a particularly arduous mission.

The only problem I had with Saint's Row, other than being buggy, was the music and commercials on the radio stations. Very annoying commercials and an awful choice of music to listen to.

The music in Saints Row was atrocious, and it was fairly joyless at times. Just no spirit to the thing.

If they can actually generate a persistent world for online Co-Op and do what they promise, allow full completion of the game in this manner, they'll have my money.

Given how much of a clusterfuck a simple deathmatch in the original was, I'm not holding out much hope.
