I think calling Meg a lousy drummer belies a misunderstanding of the idea that different drummers do different things and that serving as a technically perfect metronome for one's band isn't the only way to be a drummer. I know drummers like that and they suck. Meg's naive approach to the drums requires certain things of Jack's guitar playing and vice-versa. It's fascinating and I think it's a conscious choice on both of their parts. The woman has been in the band for a decade now. She could have improved considerably by now. Why hasn't she?

Two things are true;

a) Meg White is not a great drummer by any stretch of the imagination

and

b) her style fits perfectly with the White Stripes and is essential to their sound

It might be her, maybe from when she was younger.

It is a conscious choice, as Jack says on an NPR interview I heard while working on a job. He said he's always liked the way Meg played the drums, and hopes she never changes it. He definitely said it's a child-like performance. In fact, I'm pretty damn sure he used the word naive.

1) the people who say Meg can't drum are missing the point, and remind me of the hair metal types who grumbled about Kurt Cobain making them laughable and obsolete.

I only know of one person who dislikes Meg White as a drummer, and he's the guy who had a freak out when we took him to a jazz club. As MissZooey said, there's a stylistic choice been undertaken in her playing style, and it actually falls more in line with impromptu Jazz drumming than traditional rock drumming.

For further reference watch a few YouTubes of Cream and watch 'the best drummer of the time' act in a similar sort of manner.

Also I think I lost manly points by making the moral choice to not open the link.
