WASHINGTON (AP) — The campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Chris Dodd said Tuesday a fundraising party for Republican Rudy Giuliani seeking $9.11 each from guests exploits the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks for political purposes.

The Dodd campaign called on Giuliani to refuse the money raised at the event, saying the theme "is absolutely unconscionable, shameless and sickening." A Giuliani spokeswoman said the $9.11 idea was selected without the campaign's knowledge.

"Mr. Giuliani was quick to express much vitriol for the independent ad created by MoveOn.org last week; we would hope he would express the same kind of outrage and indignation about this group that he is the beneficiary of," Colleen Flanagan, a spokeswoman for Dodd, said in a statement released by his campaign.

Giuliani and other GOP presidential candidates strongly criticized the liberal, anti-war group MoveOn.org for a full-page advertisement the group bought in The New York Times. The ad included the headline "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?," a reference to Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq.

The Dodd campaign also said Giuliani "should reject and/or return any money raised" through the party, which is to be held Wednesday night at the home of Abraham Sofaer in Palo Alto, California. Giuliani's campaign is sponsoring house parties across the country that night for the candidate's backers.

Sofaer said he had nothing to do with the decision to ask for the $9.11.
Can't be any worse than how Giuliani's already used 9/11 to advance his campaign.

Too bad the attacks didn't happen on 12/31 - they could have gotten $3.20 more from everyone. Clearly, the choice of date was part of Osama Bin Laden's plan to undermine Giuliani's political career.

Rudy's just pissed the selfish terrorists couldn't have waited until late December.

ETA: Beaten to the punch. Good on ya, Zooey.

Ha! You owe me a Coke!

Bad move on his part. I mean, who carries around pennies these days anyway?

Also, Osama simply didn't want to ruin my birthday. We're cool like that.

And, with that, the Feds kick down the door at Mattioli's place.
Don't taze me, br...
Don't worry, Mattioli. I'll pass the hat and raise bail for you. How much do you think bail from secret prison in an undisclosed location is?
Cigarettes would be better. Apparently, they're the currency where I'm going.
I heard that after dinner, the Giuliani (in full Al Jolson Blackface) urinated on a photo of Barack Obama from atop a naked-man-pyramid.
And my respect for Giulani just dropped another 9.11%.

I'm still kind of astounded that the MoveOn.org ad is being attacked so visciously. Is that really all it does? Call him "General Betray Us?" How is that violently controversial?

it's because they hate freedom.

A lot of these people just need to toughen the hell up. If you've advanced in the army far enough to be a general, I think you've been called a lot worse than "General Betray Us". He's a big boy, he can take it without the right generating all this outrage.

There's a college newspaper editor in Colorado under fire because he published an editorial that said "Taser this -- fuck Bush." Now advertisers are pulling out and people are calling for his head. What the hell happened to sticks and stones?
Nine dollars and eleven cents, huh? Not only is Giuliani's campaign gonna make a killing off of veterans and other excessive patriots, just think of the grandmas!
Giving $9.11 is so cheap. I'm donating $27.52 to equal the WTC Death Toll.

It's not. However, the Right hit Nancy Grace-levels of faux-outrage to use it as a distraction...and it worked beautifully.

WAIT.

Rudy Giuliani was the mayor of New York City on 9/11?
I KNOW!

Who knew?
I just sent $2.26 to the Clinton campaign.
I can't really understand how Rudi expects to be taken seriously if he keeps turning himself into a cartoon character who spouts the one tagline over and over all the time. He's going to date himself quicker than parachute pants.
I just sent $12.25 to Santa Claus. You know, to "grease the toy wheels" a bit (I want an Xbox).

Hey! No posting until you buy MissZooey a Coke!

I have to say, all snark aside, it's pretty hilarious and scummy that Rudy would do that.

"I was mayor of New York during 9/11! Vote for me! Ignore the fact that I was constantly under political fire until 9/11! Ignore the very public and messy estrangement and divorce from my wife! Ignore the fact that my son is borderline estranged from me! I was the fucking mayor of New York during 9/11!"

It's a little cumbersome, but there have been worse campaign slogans, I suppose.

I guess its better than making a fund-raiser themed off the day he kicked all the homeless people out.

I'll donate one dollar for every story of the Freedom Tower that's been built so far.

I maintain that the most offensive thing about the "General Betray Us" ad is how obvious it is.

Don't worry. There'll be another Republican jawdropper soon enough. There always is.

I haven't read the ad, and I don't care about the controversy. While I think 'General Betray Us' makes MoveOn look petty, this is not something that should be taking up the valuable time of the US Senate or our esteemed selves.

This $9.11 thing is just tacky. Not in poor taste as such, just tacky.

The next step is using the death toll from the attacks as the minimum donation the campaign will accept.
It's not so much that I can't believe Republicans will get an attack of the vapours about something like the "Betray Us" ad, it's that anyone falls for it. At all.
Yeah but come on--
RUDY WAS THERE, MAN.
And he didn't run or nuthin!

More tacky 9/11 dropping from Rudy:

Quote:
RUDY AND HIS CELL PHONE

Then on the other hand there is the case of Giuliani and his cell phone.

It rang just as Giuliani was addressing the National Rifle Association recently, and he pulled it out of his pocket and chatted to his wife, Judith, in mid-speech.

The incident had some of the NRA members rolling their eyes and even some of Giuliani's supporters thought it was a silly display.

The former New York mayor has since explained the reason why he took the call and denied it was a calculated move -- even though reports circulated he had done it at least once before.

"Quite honestly, since September 11, most of the time when we get on a plane, we talk to each other and just reaffirm the fact that we love each other," he told the Christian Broadcasting Network.

Hess called it a bizarre incident.

"This man is a candidate for president talking to an important group, and it should have his undivided attention and you should at least turn off your cell phone," he said.
Not that I care that it interupted his speech to the NRA, but how often is this guy going to use 9/11 as an excuse and/or campaign lynchpin?

Does anybody really think that he has a chance since he's been so obviously disingenuous.....
I honestly don't think he has much of a chance right now. And at this time last year I thought the election would be his to lose.

He's really coming across as a creepy, weird little man with all this stuff. It's bizarre.
I can just envision the meeting with his campaign people where they first came up with this cell phone bit and were jumping to their feet high-fiving each other calling it "genius, absolute genius!"

So some people really want a president who might interrupt a high-level summit meeting with the Chinese to say goodbye to his wife?
If he loses, it's pretty clear that the events of September 11th are to blame!
Knock knock.
Who's there?
9/11.
9/11 who?
DON'T YOU EVER FORGET!
